How To Change A Freewheel On A Bike

- I show how to replace the freewheel on a bicycle wheel. I replace a worn Sachs freewheel with a new Shimano freewheel.
This is the Park Tool FR-1 tool that I used in the video. It's actually the one I use most often.
www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASI...
But depending on what freewheels you are dealing with, you may need a different tool.

Tip: Before threading the new freewheel on, slip the remover tool into the new freewheel first, then slide the free wheel onto the wheel hub. The tool keeps the freewheel straight and prevents cross threading.
I do it all the time, makes it so much easier to screw on a new freewheel. :)
Once again you've saved my bacon...and my back. I forgot if it was counter clockwise or clock wise. Whenever there's a 50/50 proposition, there is a 95% probability that I'm wrong, and I was. You're the best! Thank you so much.
He's not kidding when he says these things get extremely tight :D

I agree 👍🏼 💯
When I search a bike problem and an RJ video is in the list, I always choose it as I know it will be clear, succinct and helpful. Thank you!
Just wanted to leave a note thanking you for this, as well as your other videos. I've benefited from this knowledge quite a bit.
Keep keeping on.
Thanks for a clear concise video! I am replacing a bent rim on a tandem and I am saving the freewheel. This will be a huge help.
Simple and concise. Your videos are always helpful! Thanks!
keep posting videos RJ you helped me so many times you can't even imagine how often, i did almost every mods you do and you made me save a bunch of bike shop servicing money thanks
vini
Impressively methodical and clear, thanks
Freewheel removal tip:
I had great amount of trouble using an adjustable wrench as shown in the video (granted my wrench was short so not much torque).
That
said I've had great success with the 4-Way Lug Wrench from our car (the
cross one used to take tires off). It just so happened ours had a
13/16" socket (21mm) which matched my Shimano freewheel tool.
I hope this helps others in the removal of the freewheel, it's the hardest part of the process.

I just ride 23 miles every day for the pleasure of riding, it's a two mile bike ride to the bike path, 18+ miles on the bike path and 2 miles back 26" mountain bike is all that I need, life is Awesome RJ!☺ FanTom
I don't ride as much as I would like.
I was so happy to have seen your video on free wheel removal, I was having trouble removing mine .Once I saw you get that cheater bar I knew I had the the answer to my dilemma! ThAnk you By the way I always watch your vedeo s !
I get a lot of valuable help from your videos!
ty so much for your how to do videos.they are a lifesaver for some one who has never worked on a bike .thanks dennis
Thanks mate, very good hint with the bar, I was really struggling to get it off.
Your videos are so clear, comprehensive and helpful. Thanks so much.
great video, keep up the good work RJ.
Many Thanks RJ I broke a spoke drive side last week. Watched your video on replacing spokes and this one. Bike shop charged me 20 cents for a new spoke. Not only are your videos entertaining but they have saved me as well money, in the past, today and no doubt in the future. THANK YOU keep them coming!
20 cents! Wow! That is cheap! I usually buy a box of 100 for around $50.
Yeah I was surprised too. He said he only had 3 left in the length and size so may be that was it.
BEST BIKE GUY ON CZcams HANDS DOWN!
I know this is an old video but it totally helped my work on my girlfriend bike to remove freewheel to get to the "dork disc"...thank you very much.
Very clear instructions. What more could you want? He's obviously a technical buff but is refreshingly clear of jargon. Now all I have to do is change my friend's freewheel. Thank you. I'll call again if I need help. Andrew B
Thanks to your good advice I changed out my rear chain wheel no problems, at first I thought I needed a cheater bar but was ok with a wrench & my freewheel tool !!!!! 🤩😆 LOL
Thank you for your tips. I have just removed one myself only using an adjustable spanner, no bars or vices. This was possible because previously I had applied copper grease (as anti-seize) to the threads.
I have lithium grease , wonder if that would work
Thanks RJ. Your videos are a great resource.
Excellent video, helped me to do my own. Thank you.
THANK GOD FOR RJ HE SAVE MY DAY!
Your video helped me out a lot thank you Rj the bike guy
Awesome. Just ordered a new freewheel and freewheel removal tool, so I'm good to go.
Thanks you! You tutorial helped me. Keep well.
Daniel Oines, lightly greasing the threads is a good idea. There was already grease on the threads in the case. A 6 pt 1" box end wrench should work fine. I have always used a Crescent wrench and never had any issues. Though one time I did break the freewheel remover tool. It shattered. But it wasn't a Park Tool, it was some generic brand tool I got someplace. But that might have happened with any wrench.
RJ The Bike Guy I unfortunately put my cassette on without grease on clean hub. Should I reinstall the cassettte with grease this time, or can I ride it as it is?
You can ride it. It just may be more difficult to remove in the future.
+RJ The Bike Guy What grease do I need for this?
I use marine grease.
This video helped a lot and yes he's right after years of just sitting its not easy to loosen it up
Thanks for this video...its realy amazing
Helped me so much mate, thank you.
Thanks for the video. It was informative. Those "little notches" are called lugs.
Thank you so much, that was really helpful
Very good video! Thanks.
Nice tips Thks Pal
Thanks, you always have the best tips.
I have a really tight freewheel that i can't remove, but maybe your tips can help
employ the cheater bar, should change everything positively for you
Cheers pal. Really helpful. From Wales.
RJ it's almost 11:30pm almost done with my new bike, bought what I need to do what You say to make it last, wore my headlamp for the ride home from Walmart.🙂 FanTom USA
Good luck.
Thank you! My first attempt to remove a freewheel was earlier this evening, correct tool but it was not going to move. Worried that I would break something, I searched on here for a solution and found your video. I now know that it will move but I need a bigger lever! :-)
He's done a video on removing the freewheel but will destroy the freewheel in the process. See those two little dents at the top of the freewheel on the lockring? Use a hammer and punchbolt and aim to push it clockwise. When you've taken off the freewheel remove the threads using a pipewrench. You'll probably need a cheater bar.
Geoff Poole. You are an idiot.
Great stuff. You are a treat to watch. Motivated me to rehab two old Cannondales 7 speeds, one with steel fork, one with aluminum. I did six IMs, the missus did ten. I think I recognize IMLP as at least one you did. Correct?
+Henry Murphy I've only done three. Lousiville, Lake Placid and Florida. :D
Glad I watched this. I was about to snap a hex key in half. Guess I finally need to buy a big ol' wrench hahah.
Thankyou for the help.
Thanks for the video. I'm a novice at this repair business. I just bought a Shimano MF-TZ21 Hub and a replacement rear wheel and one of those Park freewheel removal tools . I see you don't have to use one of those " chain tools" to loosen or tighten the sprocket, just the freewheel removal tool. Thank you 😊.
wonder why he didnt need the chain tool to go along with the crescent wrench?
most videos use both tools?
@@dagobaker the chain whip would be for a cassette overhaul,
RJ, cleaned the new chain went outside to do the drops, I think it was 120, bad memory, my ride was Heavenly, I did the gear changes for hills, the chain thanks You a lot . So do I.🙂 FanTom USA
Great!
Thanks for your help RJ, the beginning of the month I'll just get another 100.00 bike like the one that I have, then I'll start getting the things that I need to keep it good !☺ FanTom USA
I hope mean a used quality bike for $100, and not a Walmart bike for $100.
just now I tried to remove my freewheel because I want to install a shimano mega range one, but I was so tight I feel my wrist was going to snap ... the I came to watch your vid and saw you using that pipe ... I was like where I am going to get a pipe like that now :c ... then I suddenly realized my bike stand is made of a nice round pipe just like that. The freewheel turned to the will of the mighty torque amplifier pipe :D
Great video
I didn't have a bar and the freewheel wouldn't budge even when I hammered the wrench. So I put the parks tool in a vice bolted to a table and rotated the wheel. It didn't take much effort to come off.
i want to change the freewheel on my 7 speed fat bike with disc brakes but haven't realy worked on bikes very much, any advise or videos on doing that ?
Good working
For the fr-1 tools i use a large 1"open end for more torque because in the past ive broken adjustables with bars slipped on for more torque overloading them a 1" open end is good enough for lugs so its a must for freewheels Imo
Insteresting, I have never broken an adjustable wrench.
I usually go harbor freight quality on those its not hard with the cheap ones
I bet its down to wrenching on the adjustable side of the wrench, I've done similar twice before, before someone older and wiser than I spotted me using one and was "flip that thing around son, it'll break on you!".
You need to be loading up the solid side of the jaw, not the adjustable side.
Thanks for your upload, kind sir!! The thread on the back of the freewheel, is that standardized? I have a worn out 6speeds Sachs freewheel, which are no longer available, and found a Shimano one as a replacement. Is it worth ordering it? Cheers, Rob! ^^
very good stuff
Thank you!
great tutorial I am trying to remove my freewheel it is a shimano Gi lockring, very similar to your video are these locking bolts universal or do I need to purchase a specific type as I usually buy from internet sites.

hey RJ- I found an old wheel in my garage with a falcon freewheel on it. the wheel is in good shape but the freewheel needs to be replaced. i bought the falcon freewheel removal tool and used a 12 "wrench and even used a pipe to act as a cheater bar but CANNOT get the thing off. the wrench just slips off the tool when i apply any pressure. think the tool might be stripped now too...can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. all your freewheel tools are in such great shape and you probably used them on hundreds of wheels. the 1 i have now and used on 1 wheel looks like its been through a hell and back about 58 times.
After placing the removal tool in the hole (instead of using a wrench) set the head of the tool in a vice and, instead of turning the tool, you can simply turn the wheel and unscrew it from the freewheel.
can this tool be used to remove a cassete? it fits but idont wanna force it until im sure
My Freewheel has another piece that goes on first before the actual free will or can I put it on without that piece also the pauls broke off can I still use the free wheel without them untill I get a new one?
RJ, can you do a video on 9 speed or even 10 speed freewheel? Due to the width of all the cogs combined, the splines seems to be rather deep and common freewheel removal tool can't fully engage and tends to slip or even stripped the splines. Thank you and keep up the great videos.
Are you sure you don't have a cassette? czcams.com/video/qcgz3-XyNkI/video.html
They make 8/9/10 speed freewheels, but they are generally low end junk.
@@RJTheBikeGuy Haha, that was brutal but I do agree they are junks. I would had dropped the whole idea of tinkering with freewheels and go straight to freehub if not for your tutorial videos. I'm pretty sure it is freewheel as it has recessed splines and the bike shop confirmed it. Due to the depth mentioned, my tool only managed to engage the splines by 4mm. Maybe my tool is junk. I've ordered two more freewheel removal tools and worst case is to haul the wheel to a bike shop... just that I really want to put what I've learned from you into good use.
Thanks for the video ....who makes a good bmx single speed freewheel ...best bang for your buck
Tnx....sir nice video
Can i use new shimano 7spd freewheel on old chain i ride my bicycle only 900kilometre i am changing my bicycle freewheel because it woobles a lot and upshifting is hesitating can i change or it will jump the gears i listen that we should replace chain and freewheel together at a time please reply
When I tried to remove my freewheel anticlockwise (like the video), it has some rachet sound, is that normal? Should I have continued to unscrew it with more and more force?
Thanks for the video RJ. Did you replace a 6 gear freewheel with a 7 gear one?
This video is 7 to 7 speed. But I have done 6 to 7 speed conversion here: czcams.com/video/rj3bYJ7zyLc/video.html
Thanks - now I believe I can do this myself and save a wad of cash ☺
How do u get that bolt off or skewer thing I watched 50 videos it won’t come off
I have a question sir.can I replace 3x7 Shimano freewheel with other 3x7 freewheel
I recommend to use box set or non adjustable spanner
3/4ths Spark plug socket works
I just took off a Simano 6 speed freewheel , and it was so tight.I tried a vice, hammer etc, The only thing that worked was heat up the freewheel. I saw some stuff expanding so turned off the propane torch. Too late the Shimano Tourney 6 speeds have plastic spacers. I can't find the spacers separately anywhere. Too bad, I prefer to service as you do than throw things out unnecesarily.
ty
Good video mate, Don't you need a new chain and probably a new chain set on the front as well, If replacing a worn freewheel ? Thanks.
Only if they are worn.
Can you change a free wheel to a free hub using the same wheel
Hey I was wondering about the chain whip tool. In this video you were not using one, while in different videos people use one.
So when is the time when you have to use one? I have the freewheel with identical splines, so I just need to buy that splined key and a wrench, or do I also need the chain whip tool?
You need a chain whip for a cassette. czcams.com/video/qcgz3-XyNkI/video.html
czcams.com/video/vs3hK7zbujw/video.html
Dear RJ
I got a 5 speed freewheel, not sure which brand but I think it is a Campagnolo Record. I would like to change it and your video really helps me, thanks for that! But, do you think its possible to install as well a triple crank in front so I get more different kind of gears?
+Sjoerd Koning Yeah, but you would need new cranks, new bottom bracket, new front derailleur, maybe new shifters, new cables/housings...
+RJ The Bike Guy thanks for the quick reply! Allright, yeah I know it would be a lot of work, but the frame is a bianchi from the seventies really beautiful. Does the triple crank needs to be of the same type or brand as the new freewheel, and would it be possible to get a 6 speed?
czcams.com/video/DO5V3qkW05g/video.html
Excuse me for dummy question: so the hub itself is different for freewheel?
My wifes shopper bike has a freewheel, it's a 7 speed Shimano freewheel and the bike is about 6 years old. Which of those removal tools would i need to remove it? The splined one that you used in the video looks like the one i would probably need?
Thanks
A freewheel tool for shimano freewheels.
Nice
Thanks...
Hi - does a freewheel wobble (side to side) once it's installed or does the freewheel stay solid and unmovable (other than the rotation of course)? I bought a new bike and the freewheel has some give ( i can push on a tooth towards the spoke and it can move a millimeter or two in the direction of the spokes). This causes intermittent knocking sounds when I switch gears (I have a fat tire rim so it's all the louder as it vibrates from spoke to rim). Thanks
Sounds loose may need tightening or faulty unit take it off and check threads no cross threading once off holding freewheel in your hand and spin if wobbling bin it and buy new pick them up cheap enough
Hi I have a 7 speeds 12-18t freewheel at the back, can I just change it for any other 7 speed freewheels (i.e 13-25t) and it should just fit on? and is there any adjustment i need to do to the derailleur? Thank you
Maybe. Depends on the specs of the derailleur and chain length. czcams.com/video/9R1CVWcgu_M/video.html
@@RJTheBikeGuy If i replace a 7 speed freewheel with a different 7 speed freewheel then it should just screw onto the threads? Should I be worry about whether the new freewheel is too big or small? Thank you for the reply
is it good enough to hand tighten the freewheel when installing? i dont have the tool and too cheap to buy it or pay bike shop to install.
Most of the tools can be bought on ebay for $10 or less. But yes, you can hand tighten it and it will tighten as you ride it. Though you will might have to adjust you shifting a little as it will move a little as it tightens.
Is it OK to put some anti-seize on the threads before installing the new freewheel?
I use grease.
Any videos on how to replace the entire hub?

what would be the best freewheel to replace a falcon freewheel? (7 speed)
Shimano something or other. Go to Amazon.
I got a Inspired fourplay team, which do you need for that one
Shrug. I don't know the bike.
i want to change the cassette on my 8 speed hybrid, how can i tell if its a cassette or a freewheel ?? i don't want to buy the wrong part. and would any 8 speed fit ??
+salvaged wretch At 8 speed , it is likely a cassette: czcams.com/video/qcgz3-XyNkI/video.html
Are all the 7speed freewheel threads the same.can I replace with different brands freewheel

www.sheldonbrown.com/freewheels.html
Yeah Good One
quick question, i have a pretty old road bike from (i'm guessing) the 70s. Lately there is a grinding noise coming from the rear hub. I am not sure whether this is coming from the free wheel, or the hub itself. Is there anyway of telling which one is broken ? ( I do not own a casette removal tool yet).
Does the grinding come when you are pedaling or when you stop pedaling? If it only happens when you stop pedaling, its the freewheel. But chances are it's the hub. The bearings in the freewheel don't get a lot of wear unless maybe they get rusty or something.
shyflirt1 So i Checked, when i take the wheel of the bike and i let it spin on its axis without turning the casette there is no grinding noise. However, when i start spinning the casette the grinding noise is there (sounds like faulty ball bearings). Therefore, I think the problem is the casette. Do you have any tips for replacing a rear 5 speed? I dont think modern casettes will fit.
5 speed would be a freewheel, not a cassette. Search ebay for a 5 speed freewheel. Or try your local bike shop. You might be able to get a used one cheap. Make sure you can get a freewheel tool for whatever brand you buy.
Hi RJ, My freewheel is on so tight, I broke the vice the freewheel tool was clamped in as I applied plenty of torque to the wheel. Not a terribly expensive or quality vice but a heavy enough piece of equipment, any suggestions, its still firmly tightened to my wheel.
Brian Mcgrady Were you turning it the right way?
Yes, For certain, I have since got it off. Breaking the vice seems to have freed it up. Thanx.
What are your thoughts on the shimano megarange? It’s a 14-34t 7 speed freewheel. I want to convert my 3x7 trek marlin 5 to a 1x7 and am a little worried it will be too hard to pedal up steep inclines . My sisters beach cruiser is a 1x7 and has the megarange. I’ve climbed some MASIVE hills on it but wonder if it will be good for MTB. I’ve already upgraded the brakes and shifters to hydraulic brakes and shimano Altus (my marlin 5 came with shimano tourney cable brakes and derailleurs) I really want to ditch the front derailleur to save weight and simplify my MTB.
I get into gearing a bit in this video. czcams.com/video/KHXYN1JH8Oc/video.html
