The AirPods Pro 2 and the Sony WF-1000XM5's both claim to be the best ANC earbuds on the market, but I tested and there can only be one winner.

ADDITIONAL REVIEW NOTES:
ANC
TEST 1: The common test for white noise: tied in first place with Bose QCii and AirPods Pro 2, but the other frequencies are the big win - both 62.1dB
TEST 2: crowd test - 48.6dB
AirPods - 47.3dB
TEST 3: female voice test - 45.6dB
AirPods - 41.5dB
TEST 4: Wind - in transparency mode, it sounds exactly like my actual ears in wind
In ANC mode, it is very muted but still audible until I play any music. I would say in high wind, I might need to turn my volume up by one notch but that’s it
Bose QCE2 have very marginally better low end ANC, but these crush it with the high end and have less white noise, so overall these feel quieter in most environments
Transparency is still a bit better on AirPods - I tried one in each ear
SOUND
LDAC vs AAC/SBC
Listening to Billy Strings:
Sony had more detail and clarity on the guitar
You could hear the pick hitting each string and the overtones that made it feel natural and alive
The upright bass was much richer and deeper
Sony buds are warmer, more powerful, more detailed, and lively
Sony also has an EQ, so if you want more or less bass, that is possible
AirPods are pretty neutral with a somewhat shallow bass. Very little distortion and great instrument separation with clean details and an emphasis on upper mids for more perceived clarity. Far from energetic though
DESIGN
AirPods case is slightly smaller
Sony comes in two colors
Stem vs no stem - vote on your favorite!
AirPods case has a lanyard hook
Controls - pinch vs tap!
AirPods have swipe
Sony has quadruple tap
FEATURES
BOTH have 360 audio
Wireless charging, but magsafe on airpods
Mono mode
Auto play/pause
Both IPX4
AirPods have FindMy and airtag-like precision lactating features
AirPods case has a speaker on it
Apple seamless switching
Audio sharing on iPhone
Native Siri
Sony has
Personalization in the app - scan your ear - I never use this
LE audio (low latency for gaming)
8/24 hrs WITH ANC!
3 min charge = 60 min listening
Multipoint connectivity
Eco friendly packaging
Ambient sound control - I never use this
Speak to chat
Quick listen
MICROPHONE TEST
CONCLUSION
AirPods have some ecosystem advantages like audio sharing, seamless switching, and FindMy benefits. They also have superior microphones while maintaining a neutral sound profile and powerful ANC. With that said, the Sony WH-1000XM5’s are the clear winner in my book. Better sound, better ANC, better features, and a more secure fit in my ears.
PRICE
$299 vs $249

Which pair do you think is better? And what should I compare the Sony's to next?
Latest price (affiliate link) mikeobrienmedia.com/SonyXM5
Put these XM5's against some HiFi buds like Senn MTW 3 or Technic's AZ-80, B&O, Audiotechnicas ect. This comparison is nice, but most people who are going to buy Airpods likely wouldn't' look at Sonys in the first place. Folks who buy high end audio hardware are more likely to skip the airpods and aim for Sony ect.
B & OM EQ please Mike
Bose quietcomfort earbuds 2
Senn MTW 3
Mike you need to get a new pair of xm5s you have a pair of faulty ones mine does not sound like that on the mic end it's better then that.
Bro has a separate ‘female voice blocking’ criteria!
that was wild imo
Okay, I'm bying sony for this particularly specific reason.
This video was great! I really liked seeing the anc comparison chart. This video helped me decide which ones to buy, thank you!❤️
Which ones do you prefer?
Love the way to do your ANC tests. If you ever get bored please consider doing the test on the Isotunes Free Aware earbuds, as I would love to see if the Sonys are actually better for me than what they require at work.
Awesome content and video comprising as always bro
Great review.
I got the apple airpods pro 2 , my first from Apple, using with an iPhone and android.iive them - brilliant all rounder, nose cancellation on the London underground is better than anything I've had in the past.
I had the linkbud s and loved them, but noise cancellation wasn't up to the task and audio quality needed a bit more.
However, I do like ldac with some tracks (file format and source device make a bigger difference than codecs with my set up) and I've been impressed with Sony's commitment to updates and longevity compared to many of the cheaper brands I've tried.
how's the mic in noisy situations?
Airpods "find my" function uses a lot of energy when not used. There is a difference between 70% after 3 days of light use and 50% with enabled find my. They just sit at home, so I disabled this function to preserve battery.
If I’m listening to Spotify on an iPhone. Which of these earbuds would you suggest? Do the Sony earbuds still sound better on an iPhone, even with the LDAC non compatability?
The multi-point connection to any 2 devices made me decide to pick these up. These will be great for work since I use my iphone for calls and pc for everything else. I'll use my airpod pro 2 for when I'm home or traveling and using my iphone and ipad.
Great, clear style of presentation 👍🏼
Man, I like you. Your contents are realy usefull. And nice and fair expanation
When will you be doing a 2023 under $100 earbud review? ( love your vid 2 - 3 years prior, and need new buds !)
The call quality/mic is the deal breaker for me as I am using earbuds for phone calls primarily. Based on your mic test, the AirPods Pro 2 seems much better. I own both SONY earbuds and overhead earphones as well as AirPods Pro.
There's someone who did a test it's not a leap like some say
Truly. They sound like the XM4s and I can confirm you cannot take calls on those. The mics are pathetic.
@ShubhamAtkare actually on the xm5s you can unlike the xm4s I own both pairs. I manage to get xm5s early as well. I like them alot more
I dont care about apple so i will choose the sony 😂
Bull shit
Getting mine in today. Had the xm4s in my wishlist for over a year. Dont give a shit about making calls on it. I want the music quality with the convenience. Cant have wires being around glass bottles all day
Did you do the mic test with an apple product? Because I heard from another video after another test that apple products don’t like the codec of the non-apple headphones so it reduces the sound quality.
Very helpful. I’ll start saving for the Sony earbuds. Thanks.
Great review thank's
Great Review, I am surprised, and new subscribed :)
In terms of the case size and dimensions, which one is more pocket friendly?
I think it’s just preference really, one might be objectively better but for a average user they are both amazing
For usd299 the mic quality in indoor settings has to be better, and not muffled voice. That’s basic 101.
@MikeOBrienMedia Great review! I am seriously considering an upgrade from the Jabra 75t. How well does the Sony M5 work with only one earbud in? If you needed to share a pair (with my wife) in a quiet environment... could we each use one earbud while listening to the same device (the Jabra 75t doesn't seem to do this)? Thank you.
Hi there. I also have a Jabra product and now have the XM5 buds. The short answer to your question is that the earbuds work independently and you vould share them with someone else or use them one by one.
Love my Bose QC II. Curious to try the Sony but the foam tips tearing worries me. But he didn't mention it in this video
The foam tips are absolutely amazing. Would recommend foam tips with any buds tbh
What is that blck ring you are wearing? Is that a fitness tracker? Looking for an alternative to Apple watch!
Hi Mike. What do you think about the Technics EAH -AZ80?
Technics AZ80 comparison please. These are the 2 buds I’m debating with this year.
My Link Buds S silicon tips fit perfectly. All I had to do was just transfer them over new XM5's and I'm good to go (no more seal issues).
I sold the XM4’s to get the Air Pods and have never looked back, until now…
I've tried both, and I found that the Airpods had a much more pleasing sound profile for most genres. The fit on both are fine for my ears.
Whos the best on ANC?
Had a rough experience with xm4 and customer care for somy really sucks and can't forget the unequal battery drain issues which is such a headache
Though these might be premium I will stick to galaxy 2 buds pro
For anyone out there with the airpod pro 2 if you use foam tips they the ANC is equal to the Sony XM5
Air Pods Pro take it on the microphone test both indoors and out which is important for me. Very happy with the sound of the Air Pods Pro as well.
what do you think is better for absolute audio quality between these and the Beoplay EQ? I have the latter and they're still going strong so I was wondering whether this would be an upgrade or a downgrade.
Any Bang and Olufsen is going to have the best sound. The Beoplay EX, sound wise destroys every TWS, IMO.
Compare them with the galaxy buds pro 2 next!
I think they similar enough that the one thing that we need to consider is which one fit better
Does it sound better than senhiser tws?
Can Sony wf1000xm5 be used independently left or right bud.
Airpods pro 2 are must if you are an IOS user. After upgrading to Comply foam tips, they are so much more comfortable and bass is little more punchy. Previously, I tried using Bose QC 2 earbuds and they were a nightmare. They would randomly disconnect or won't pair and the sound would glitch out at times. I got so annoyed to a point and back to airpods. The whole experience using Airpods is just so much better as an IOS user. You can make them sound even better by adjusting the EQ in your music app (I use spottily) but their stock eq is good enough.
How is the call quality in the car?
Now, which one is louder xm4 weren’t loud enough?
Can we use XM5 buds independently?
i've just unpacked mine XM5.... first question (i had the same problem with XM4)
How to enable AMBIENT SOUND and stop the music WITH THE SAME ONE TOUCH ?? sounds so obvious ... (and it works like this with Sennheisers)
(i don't want to keep holding one earbud for a minute if i want to talk more - quick attention mode)
No mention at all of Dolby Atmos/Spatial audio?
Thanks for the concise review. I’ve read a lot of reviews over the last week and this consolidated everything well and talks about the important factors. Nicely done. Sounds like AirPods sound better on calls and they have findMy which is underrated feature. I don’t care for the design of the AirPods
How do these compare to previous generation?
Got to say that Sony aswell has one Feature in the App where the Headphones Play a loud Sound so you can find them. However that does ofcours only Work when you already are near them
what about the adaptive noise canceling for the mic on airpods pro2?
I have both. Mic quality is slightly better in AirPods and transparency mode is also better. On absolutely everyone else, the M5 are much, much better. In sound quality the M5 is miles ahead.
My AirPods Pro gen 1 are dying, so I’m primed for a new or buds. This video was very helpful!
Did you end up getting pro 2s?
Great video btw in the thumbnail you show airpods pro 1 not 2
I like my xm5s noise canceling more then the air pods and the mic is pretty good
I am getting the AirPods Pro 2. The microphone quality is the difference. For me, these will be used for calls and for using when walking or doing chores. The sound quality is a second tier consideration. When I want good sound, on my commute or plane rides, I’ll be sticking with my Sony over ear WH1000xm3.
I just bought the AirPods Pro 2. I purchased the Sony XM4’s but Sony lost a customer when they rejected my warranty claim due to a tinny sound that would occur during podcasts.
My question is: can u compare two earbuds when airpods was released like one year before and had firmware patches to fix or improve their earbuds while sony has just came out without any firmware patches?
Maybe in six months sony could improve (or not) call quality or transparency or other features.
Six months later is a deal breaker because cannot enjoy good call quality immediately for the big lump sum paid for XM5
Mike what do you say by comparing WF-1000XM5 vs Pixel Buds Pro :)
Being on iPhone should I miss out on the xm5? I assume the aac codec would have the pro 2 sounding and xm5 sounding similar
Just bc aac was made for iphones, it means nothing, ldac still a lot better codec
Also xm5s were literally also made for iphones primarily, not all non-apple products are made for androig
King video.
Are the Sony xm4s worth a buy cause of the price drop. I just got them for around $120 but I need to know if I should switch to xm5s or not.
Do you have any battery drain issue with one of earbud
Because am having left earbud battery drain issue
Hi Mike. Sony Vs B&O EQ please
Was LDAC testet on Android? iPhones does not Support ldac
I also would like to hear a comparison of comfort. Also how likely for them to drop from the ears?
This is also what i wanted to know
Much appreciated. I was going to get the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro 2 as I have Samsung gear, but my wife has the headphone version of these, and they are fantastic. I did not realize there was a Buds version. The AirPods lose many features when using my Samsung phone, and these look on par. I still think the Samsung Pro 2 are nice buds (and I may
kick myself when the next version is rumored to drop any time), but these seem to be in a different class. Anyone that has alternative ideas, feel free to let me know.
Im currently using the 1000XM4 and a big problem with those is the battery life of my right ear bud and im not alone with that problem, would be interesting to know if Sony fixed that with the XM5. My right earbud doesnt really charge more than 80% and lasts like 1 hour tops until its out of juice, the left one is still completely fine tho.
This is caused by a new firmware update (loading voltage is to high). If you are still under guarantee you can get new ones or your money back from the shop you bought them
@@BaSsLoVer2o11 What a coincidence, i just filled out a form and boxed them to be send back to sony. Since its still under guarantee they're gonna fix it. I lowkey hope they just give me a new pair and dont open the earbud and replace the battery.
@mikeobrienmedia On Multipoint connectivity I have question for XM5. Say you have connected 2 devices, iPhone and MacBook, and you had paired with iPad as well and wanted to use in iPad while other 2 devices are On. Is it possible directly or need to turn off one of the devices?
Turn off one
Sony's mic on XM3-5 seems to not up to par with the price they charge for it. I am surprise by the way Sony seems to still struggle with this.
I'm glad you were listening to lover by TS
I hope this model has solved the widespread battery drain issues on the XM4. So many people had to return their earbuds because the battery would die after 30 minutes on one bud
Yeah i thought it was just me!! Lol
I will not give Sony my money after the xm4 battery issue. They should offer a trade in.
never had any battery issues with mine
@@TextNotEnteredSame here. Im disappointed with sony. I couldn't even send it to their centre to get it fix or replace them as my xm4 warranty had already ended. It's a shame bcs i love my xm4 so much that i would wear em almost every time of the day.
Same here, and I bought the XM4s full price. I’m going to wait this one out.
Question, was one tested on iphone and the other on an android, to make it a fair comparison?
I have airport pro 2 and just under 2 years I have cracking noise coming from one side.I think I will try Sony this time.
To me the sound quality is the thing, especially at $300.00.....so with that said, match the XM5's against some really biig hitters like the Status 3ANC, Beoplay EX,, Denon Perl, etc.. Now THAT would be impactful, imho.
Are the sony that you are testing a pre production unit. Heard those units have some phone call issues. Just wondering. I ordered mine yesterday. So excited to get them.
I don't have any issues with the mic I'm pretty sure this CZcams got a bad pair cause it don't sound bad like this on my end.
@jessiestarr4600 some youtubers got a special pair for them to test. I'm not referring to the mainline ones.
@@mikeecalvary gotcha
I had the WF-1000XM4 for one year until they broke after a Sony update that fried the batteries. Then I had the Momentum True Wireless 3, which we're way better than the Sony's in terms of sound quality. Then I move to iPhone and two weeks ago I got the AirPods Pro 2. They AirPods blew the Sony's out of the water. They are comparable with the Momentum's but they are still better than those too. I just don't believe Sony made such a massive leap to be competitive with AirPods, at least not on iOS, where the AirPods just don't have a competitor. Spotify with a bass boost EQ and Spacial Audio sounds just amazing (i'm a bit of a bass head). I also had bad experiences with the Sony warranty in my country, they basically only change one earbud, when both earbuds had fried battery and the case too. After so many bad experiences with the XM4's I just made a promise to myself to not buy anything Sony again.
welcome to the club, I ditched Sony around 10 years ago. Not buying anything from them ever again either!
I have a healthy amount of skepticism about your claims "AirPods blew the Sony's out of the water". Sony is miles ahead in terms of both ANC and sound quality.
@@PvtAnonymous I have the same opinion about everything Apple
@@vitalkhlebnikov depends on the model. I for example would never buy their basshead-style WH-100XM4 or XM5s. They dropped the professional audio market in the west quite a few years ago and only release good headphones in Japan.
I had the same problem and not buying sony products anymore.
Can't wait to get the Sony earbuds was gonna get another pair of galaxy buds time to switch up for better features this gonna be a great gift for myself for my birthday next month ❤
I like SONY's compack size rather than Airpod's Stem.
But, I really don't like that SONY don't allow to change the controlling option,
Just as Soundcore App & also many other earbuds.
I find that AWFUL in terms of consumer comfort.
Loved the shirt with stripes,
Following the sweet colour...
🙂
While I'm excited to try these, I have my doubts about them being the best.
The Denon PerL Pro (Previously Nura True Pro) earbuds are so far beyond everything else,
I don't think anyone else is going to catch up anytime soon.
AptX Lossless, Perfect Transparency, Incredible ANC and a microphone that is comparable to a dedicated desk mic...
Give them a shot if you really want the best out there.
Were the song tests on both earphones done connected to iPhone? Thinking of getting the XM5s but I know some earphones do better connected to android phones than iPhones.
I believe so ye cause people with androids had a little better results
and vice versa. I found the AirPods Pro 2 to sound significantly better on iOS due to their adaptive EQ feature. Same song through Apple Music on a Pixel 7 Pro just sounded... boring? in comparison. Even took me some time to figure out why it was happening.
I like the Sony looks
Best review on the internet, every Damnnn time. Love your videos!
Why no chapters? 😢
Pre-ordered the Sony earbuds and have used the 1000xm4s since they came out, but all of the mic tests I've heard of the AirPods Pros have been overwhelmingly better. It's a shame that they Sony flagship earbuds don't have so much clarity.
I've had so many battery issues from the wf-xm4s that I'm not buying anything brand new from Sony anymore.
@corey7219 I also had battery issues. The wf-1000xm4s didn't last a full two years before the charging case died in addition to the right bud only holding about an hour of charge. However, the sound quality, battery life, and fit (after switching to Comply foam tips) were so much better than anything else I've tried, which is why I'll try the wf-1000xm5s. I did get an extended warranty through Sony the first time around and will definitely do the same for the mark 5s, since they eventually sent me a replacement unit after about a month of back and forth with customer service. I'm wary but optimistic.
Linkbuds S is actually better
@@lss8713 I still have the final pair of comply foam eartips that I still have, but refuse to wear because the inner core tears off from the eartips themselves way before the eartips themselves degrade. So I've been using the wf-xm3s silicone eartips
@@corey7219 Yeah, the Comply tips fall apart pretty easily. I try never to remove them until they need to be thrown away. I learned this the hard way. Granted, it would be so much better if the consumer didn't have to pay an extra $20 to mod a $300 pair of earbuds...
It is AirPods for me. It even reminds you instantly on your phone if you leave your AirPods behind say in a flight or taxi or a restaurant. Plus the call quality is way better with decent sound quality. Lastly being in the Apple ecosystem just helps me seamlessly connect across all devices.
just ordered the xm5 and WOW the noise cancellation is infinitely better than airpods
Since every pair of TWS I have usually goes through tip rolling, a lot of what made the wf-1000xm4 and now the xm5s have very good anc are the foam tips they use I find. I’ll have to try with the xm5s whenever I decide to get them but the xm4’s anc somewhat feels less effective if you go with certain silicon tips.
The call quality is a dealbreaker though, specially in noisy environments where the AirPods were a lot better in.
I generally prefer sony, but I don't like the new design. The shiny plastic just makes it look really cheap in my opinion. It's even worse when you consider that they used to have recycled plastic there, which means the new earbuds lost the very small amount of echo-friendliness that they did have, just so they could look different.
I'm looking for new buds and I originally wanted the airpods pro 2 but since i have android it's probably not a good choice, so i guess ill try the sonys
The Sony call quality sounds terrible. Holy crap.
I have the xm4- and the call quality is excellent, not sure why the peaking, I have not had that experience
In the Netherlands, the airpods are also 300 euros so the same price
had the new xm5 for 3 days i will be returning them still far too bulky cant get a comfortable fit either.
the left earbud has a little notch on it i found it really annoying also it digs into my ear.
i have a old set of anker soundcore earbuds think they were £60 to £70 the sound quality is not anywhere near the sonys but you forget you even have them in.
i also was not impressed with the volume on the xm5 for that kind of money i was expecting some sort of wow factor i didnt think the volume was that great on them nor did my girlfriend who has the galaxy buds 2.
Ldac is 320 kbps. (Cd and studio quality ) Regular Bluetooth is 192 kbps. I notice a difference at loud vol for sure.
ist worth upgrading from xm4 to xm5?
Nope. Xm4's are still amazing earbuds even though a newer model is out now.
What about Huawei Freebuds pro 3? I hear it has best mic
I’m buying ear buds today and needed to see some differences between these two. My choice is also the Sony. Thanks so much for sharing this video!❤
I'm not a fan of foam tips I still love the rubber from air pods pro 2
I've been using the Bose QC IIs for their noise cancelling that was far superior to my Airpods Pro 2s. However, I've missed the audio quality of the Sony's. I'm cautiously optimistic that with the XM5s I'll get the better noise cancelling and the better sound quality. Most of my calls are indoors and I found the XM4's worked well enough that I never had a complaint.
Xm5s are really good
Both variants of the xm4 are pretty bad sound wise so u def mean sound signature not quality
@@carlozzz3300 I meant sound quality.
ill buy both
Thanks for this video! I have the airpods pro 2 and Bose Quiet Comfort II. Both are so good with ANC. I put foam tips on my Airpods pro 2 and they are even better than my Bose now. This sounds like a good pair to get if I decide to just get an extra pair but I'll pass for now due to the price. Airpods pro 2 are on sale for $199 brand new at this time.
In India, AirPods Pro 2 costs around $300 after discount so getting Sony XM5s would be an easy choice also I’m slowly trying to leave apple ecosystem so again Sony would be a better option for me.
Which foam tips are you using?
So ANC on either is great? Cant choose
@@LouisHamilton I prefer the AirPods 2 now.
Someday i'll get the sony's, i already have the Linkbuds S and i'm pretty confortable with them.
I use both LinkBuds S and XM4. LinkBuds S is great, no problem with battery life and ANC even better, according to my own experience. Sound also not much different from XM4,also great
Bought the sony.after listening to your review.tried to use it for a month. Was super uncomfortable fit. Noise cancelation was meh.. returned it today and got the aipods pro 2 for $100 less. I'm already in love with it. The clean sound, the super comfortable fit, noise cancelation that no one can beat. This is the first time your review didn't work for me. Other than this experience, i love your content 😊
You said it right. Airpods pro 2 is way far better in all aspects than sony
You never bought the Sony WF-1000xm5 only an Apple fanboy would say meh for Sony ANC
@@RobertK1993 Not at all an apple fan boy. I use a pixel phone. I also own a sony WH-1000xm5 and am completely satisfied by it. I hoped that the true wireless earbuds would be equally good, but I didn't like it or felt that it was comfortable. It's my personal preference, may be different for others.
You say you didn’t have the right fit and in the same message you describe the ANC as mweh while every reviewer out there praises the ANC. You don’t think it has something to do with it not having a good fit maybe? 😅
the sonys have one of the best anc’s out of all earbuds in the world, how in the fk is it meh when everyone has it in the top 3 best anc?
For $450CAD the XM5 mic quality is absurd. Quite disappointed how they didn’t improve the mic quality. Might as well just get the XM4 on sale for more than half the price.
For me the most important thing is always the transparency modes. So personally I would go for AirPods
I have the wm-1000XM5 and I think you have defective units because the microphone of your sony does not sound normal at all. I don't have such distiortion from the microphone.
