Joy Division- She's Lost Control- 12" Single Version

  • My favorite version of this song :)
    Here are the lyrics:
Confusion in her eyes that says it all
    She's lost control
And she's clinging to the nearest passer-by
    She's lost control
And she gave away the secrets of her past and said
    I've lost control again
And of a voice that told her when and where to act, she said
    I've lost control again
And she turned to me and took me by the hand and said
    I've lost control again
And how I'll never know just why or understand, she said
    I've lost control again
And she screamed out, kicking on her side and said
    I've lost control again
And seized up on the floor - I thought she'd die - she said
    I've lost control [again]
She's lost control again - she's lost control
She's lost control again - she's lost control
Well I had to phone her friend to state her case and say
    She's lost control again
And she showed up all the errors and mistakes and said
    I've lost control again
But she expressed herself in many different ways
    Until she lost control again
And walked upon the edge of no escape and laughed
    I've lost control [again]
She's lost control again - she's lost control
She's lost control again - she's lost control

I could live a little better with the myths and the lies
When the darkness broke in I just broke down and cried
I could live a little in a wider line
When the change is gone - when the urge is gone
    To lose control
    When here we come

Alderley Edge. I took the bus south out there from my Levenshulme bedsit after escaping from a dangerous relationship with a disturbed schizophrenic girlfriend, April 1980. Had a drink and a nap behind a wall in a wood. Woke and saw Ian in there, wandering around on his own.. true story.

Love both versions, but the additional lyrics and the added synth are just so great. Love the louder drums, but the electronic snare on the up version is just so special. Glad we have both versions, no need to decide.

Just been listening to this version and the Unknown Pleasures one... They are very different, but I wouldn't say one is exactly better than the other.
This one focuses on the beat and the music is almost incidental.
The Unknown Pleasures one pushes the beat into the background and has the music almost harmonizing with Ian Curtis - The Bass is way more prominent. That version gradually loses control as the song progresses and so is an amazing bit of production.
The single is better for clubbing but, if the Unknown Pleasures version is heard alone in a dark room, it becomes one with your soul. Like Passover, my other favourite.

@@whatamalike well to debate here... The drums in this sound like white noise and is very distracting, in comparison to the transcending sound on the album version. I do not like the overly done snare fuzz in this. I do love Ian's tone in this one, but not the way he's singing some of the words in the verses that makes the album version so great to me. Overall, everything but the drums sounds good to me.

  • @polderdebanjan

The album version belongs to Unknown Pleasures. This version stands very well on its own as a single, and with its more abrasive, layered tone, could also easily be a track off Closer.

At one point in 1978, Curtis noticed that the girl had stopped coming into the department. He later discovered she’d had a fit in her sleep and had tragically died.
