The was Ian could get into the music and unabashedly do his thing in front of all those people is so admirable. 99.99% of us would stand up there stiff and nervous to our core.
A young man battling with marriage, epilepsy and depression. God rest his soul. He was an amazing talent. The goth scene would of never of existed if it wasn't for Joy Division and their dark lyrics. Ian was a poet in his early education, but the rest of the band thought his lyrics were about common day matters... His lyrics were actually about his suffering as a human being. It is this honesty expressed in his music that he shall never be forgotten.
Goths choose to be Goths;what he was he couldn't escape.Marriage just sort-of happened(...without the pregnancy?).Epilepsy:don't forget that he had a client who died as a direct result of it - being 'sensitive',he would have fixated over this.More-so having been diagnosed as epilectic. As a severe manic depressive who - as I type this - am aware of the tub next to my bedside which contains close-on six hundred pills and one scalpel - I am alive to the fact that he didn't stand a chance.
I'm 19 and I was diagnosed with epilepsy last year. Seeing that Ian fought the same condition I have was a terrifying thought at first, but it's oddly turned around and helped me to cope-- the best music being the kind that reminds you that you aren't alone is only a cliche because it's true. I had listened to this song a million times before, but it's taken on a new meaning to me now and become one of the songs closest to my heart. Rest in peace, Ian Curtis. If only you knew your impact.
Dostoevsky had the same illness. In his romance "The Idiot" the main hero also had it. Dostoevsky describes the moment before the epilaptic seizure starts as something magnificent, empathy and love to everything and everyone, the highest state of mind.
Are you managing on medication? I was diagnosed with epilepsy 8 years ago when I was 17, honestly thinking I'd never be normal again. The doctors got me on steady medication 6 months later, and I've been seizure-free ever since. I can drive, cycle, swim etc. Hope you're well!
Peter Hook plays the bass like a lead guitarist and Stephen Morris never misses a beat. Fantastic lyrics. Driving, hypnotic beat. Who knows how truly great Joy Division could have become.
No one can be as intense and honest and pure on stage as Ian Curtis. A troubled genius far ahead of his time. Poor bastard, RIP Ian. And thank you mate.
I'm sure there are other singers with the same kind of energy out there, but I haven't seen them yet. To assume there is only one is just gatekeeping; there are millions of musicians, you never know. One singer I can think of with a similar energy is the lead singer of Swans. There's the live performance of "Beautiful Child". I didn't see similar dancing and the vocals are louder, but the energy I felt watching it was the same I felt watching the performance of "She's Lost Control".
Three things I have to say about this clip: 1. Stephen Morris had incredible stamina. If I tried to play a drum part like that, I'd get cramps. 2. I love the way Bernard and Peter interact with each other and trade off on playing the main riff towards the end. 3. Ian looks so sad. I can't understand how anybody could watch this and think that he's feeling normal. No. You can tell he's not okay just by looking at him.
it's sad that there was so much anger between hooky and bernard.. they are so talented. Hooky said without him it's not new order, that is true, just as the same way it wouldn't be new order without bernard or morris and joy division wasn't JD without Ian. They all needed each other and just sucks they pissed it away fighting all these years when they should have come together, but at least they made some great energetic timeless music between JD and NO.
This is how I feel when I see Thom Yorke dance. I feel like it’s very sincere and honest. Having said that, this performance literally blows all my favorite Radiohead live stuff out of the water I think. This might be my favorite live performance ever recorded.
If only you were still here Ian. Your music soothes my soul. I suffer from depression and epilepsy. I know the feeling. Poet and Legend. Soulmate in another lifetime.
Yes a piece of history. I saw this live (yeah Im an old git). Spellbinding isnt it as Ian Curtis' eyes tell you everything and, in a blink, they tell you absolutely nothing. Tragically brilliant performance.
This is one of the best things I've seen. The pain in Ian's vocals. His struggles. In his dance is his spirit and the wilderness of where he goes. Stephen Morris is one of the best drummers ever in my opinion. Bernard summer is an amazing guitarist and Peter Hook is fearless.
Curtis is to music what Kafka is to literature. Coming from nowhere, without all this education, money, family backround and security. Creating from scratch some of the most impressive works of art ever. I have a lot of respect for musicians and I wouldn't want to live in a world without technical impressive musicians like Coltrane, James Jamerson, Hendrix etc., but what is so special about Joy Division is that none of them was an educated musician, they all just started to become musicians as tweens and after just 2 or 3 years they came up with something like that. That's punk in the best sense of the word. Kafka and Curtis even had similar jobs. She's Lost Control is about one of Curtis' "clients" that had epilepsy and Curtis wrote this song about her before his epilepsy became evident.
Ian was actually a fan of Kafka- Colony is a reference to Kafka's "In The Penal Colony" and the idea of the guitar riff was to sound like the mechanical torture machine from the story
Just discovered Joy Division And I'm blown away, the riffs, drums and vocal are genius. As for Ian Curtis he is mesmorizing and i feel him, i also thought Jarvis Cocker (my era) has styled himself on Curtis' dancing surely!? @@strangebrew1231 Weird? Are you out of your mind dude? The dancing is gorgious, is pure and raw punk feeling, it's a fucking dance not a crime televised.
Just saw the movie Control. Never really listened to Joy Division but I'm seriously impressed with the lost talent of this young man. His lyric writing was so pure/raw. Sad the world lost such talent. Love his dancing style. RIP Ian.
And tight as a drum machine. I read in his book that he would be physically exhausted when they would play disorder and then transmission in succession because of the very swift fills. Funny guy. He has actually written "Playing either of the two songs was tiring enough, but both played in quick succession was like running a one-minute mile".
John Nada Why? He’s innovative because he added electronics to his kit with that style of playing. You don’t have to be technically gifted to be innovative man. Top 1000? You must hate him
Ian Curtis' dancing has always been tremendously upsetting to me and yet intensely captivating and electrifying. I've always seen so much anguish in his movements. He's a completely unique frontman, and a truly tragic story. I can only imagine the countless hours so many of us would have spent listening to more of their music. RIP.
yeh a back street front man in his cheap sweaty cloths laying down unique poetry in a way no one had or ever will a genious timeless and loved now even more than ever so uncool but inyet as cool as it gets omg i wonder what he would have achieved if he had lived longer eh
Ian's dancing is quite disturbing to me. It's very reminiscent of his epileptic condition, but it's extremely hypnotic the way he moves. Like he's in a trance and like he's body is barely able to contain his soul that's trying to rip itself out it.
john bachak I don't think he was true only epileptic persone to dance this way! I used to dance like him when I was epileptic in my youth and taking polls that also released me as well. ..

"When we would rehearse Joy Division, Ian would just sit in the corner and mumble into a microphone, but when we went and did the first gig with him, he turned into this dervish thing" - Stephen Morris
Hooky / Morris thought wow - what is going on with his dancing / arms.. When Ian said they just didn't understand, when i would go out there, I would give it everything that I had and then they wanted to go on tour to the usa! You can clearly see his erratic arm movement dancing is almost like pure energy needing to be released and that's how he expressed himself..
@syntikkamies if anything the dancing is a little to blame for his epilepsy; getting himself into that wild state while he performed would trigger him (along with the lights and intoxicated state he was in) into having seizures
Every time that I listen this song is like been the first time, I never be tired of this energy. Thanks guys for so many masterpieces, R.I.P Ian Curtis.
The way the guitar merges with the bass creates some really dissonant but also really cool chords that really make this song what it is. What a great band and Ian will be sorely missed. I can just imagine the band they'd have become if he'd stuck around. Thank god they left us with two great and influential albums.
I honestly believe he loved his bandmates and family so much he couldn't bare the idea of letting them down due to his health, especially as they were about to embark on their first US tour and on the verge of huge success.
153 thumbs up: Seven of the disciples-Peter, Thomas, Nathanael, the sons of Zebedee, and two others decided to go fishing one evening after the Resurrection of Jesus, but caught nothing that night. Early the next morning, Jesus (whom they had not recognised) called out to them from the shore: Friends, haven't you any fish?" When they reply "No", Jesus responds: "Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some".After doing so, "they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish". Realising the identity of their advisor, the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" at which Peter jumped into the water to meet him, while the remaining disciples followed in the boat, towing the net, which proved to be full of 153 large fish :) /babyJesus from Sweden

@@deenibeeniable I didn't say it's why he killed himself - by the way, sorry about the epilepsy - that - has got to be one hell of a thing. People think they have it bad, you know. Anyways, I just think because he wasn't taking the medication and in a world like seventies football hooligan Manchester, it was a way to express himself - being totally different. Back then people would laugh while you almost die or just leave you, thinking your hopped up. It was a time when men were men, and like no sympathy in a factory town - it was hard on him. Rather than medicating it he went with drugs and got worse. Along with a lot of depression he had already, it was a bad cocktail for a person to go through. Keep on Rockin - Your friends in Chicago
You can imagine how otherworldly Joy Division must have sounded to a 70s audience. To us, they are too, but it must have been so more pronounced on the ears of a generation of music lovers raised on punk and rock n roll. Visionaries.
There was a lot of great music around at that time post Punk, it didn't sound otherworldly it suited the time it was from. The kid's becoming adults then would have been "raised" on British Glam rock like Bowie, Roxy Music, Slade, T-Rex and so was Ian. I was a little younger so I was a Wombles guy😅😅😅.
What I really love about this song is the fact that the bass riff and guitar riff don't match at all. Especially when the guitar plays the B barre chord, it just becomes completely incomprehensible. It's almost outsider music in a way, which I find so fascinating.
She's lost control again.... Pure class. Immortal song. Unreal if you were lucky enough to see them play live. Happy memories. MY most influential band ever.
fizro yeah it’s weird. He didn’t really need to, but he chose to play using all bar chords where the finger positions were the same the whole time. It probably would have made more sense to like a more localized area for those chores but he just chose to slide up and down the neck lol. He plays in a weird way alright. Looks completely different to the rest of the band when they perform.
Confusion in her eyes that says it all. She's lost control. And she's clinging to the nearest passer by, She's lost control. And she gave away the secrets of her past, And said I've lost control again, And a voice that told her when and where to act, She said I've lost control again. And she turned around and took me by the hand and said, I've lost control again. And how I'll never know just why or understand, She said I've lost control again. And she screamed out kicking on her side and said, I've lost control again. And seized up on the floor, I thought she'd die. She said I've lost control. She's lost control again. She's lost control. She's lost control again. She's lost control. Well I had to 'phone her friend to state my case, And say she's lost control again. And she showed up all the errors and mistakes, And said I've lost control again. But she expressed herself in many different ways, Until she lost control again. And walked upon the edge of no escape, And laughed I've lost control. She's lost control again. She's lost control. She's lost control again. She's lost control.

He had lost control.

Best wishes to you I hope all is well
Fantastic read, all the best to you.
I got diagnosed today and have the same feeling.
Peter Hook plays the bass like a lead guitarist and Stephen Morris never misses a beat. Fantastic lyrics. Driving, hypnotic beat. Who knows how truly great Joy Division could have become.
Joy division is (to me) the best band ever!!
I'll second that!
41 years has passed and we still miss u Ian.
No one can be as intense and honest and pure on stage as Ian Curtis.
A troubled genius far ahead of his time.
Poor bastard,
RIP Ian. And thank you mate.

Genius😂? More like a depressed guy who has a nice voice

He left his mark on this earth with 2 of the best albums ever, still utterly relatable and ground breaking for me
I'm sure there are other singers with the same kind of energy out there, but I haven't seen them yet.
1:32 Always gives me goosebumps.

The anger and frustration in his voice ..
@@Opuss55 way better than you, stupid muppet.
The older I get the more I realise joy division was the best band hands down😊
Three things I have to say about this clip:
They all needed each other and just sucks they pissed it away fighting all these years when they should have come together, but at least they made some great energetic timeless music between JD and NO.
most people (the band included) thought it was some sort of persona
but we should never forget that Ian took a lot of drugs too.

This is how I feel when I see Thom Yorke dance. I feel like it’s very sincere and honest. Having said that, this performance literally blows all my favorite Radiohead live stuff out of the water I think. This might be my favorite live performance ever recorded.

@@jasontimperley9199 Tell us more!!
God damn, that very last shot of Ian Curtis just slumped over, totally exhausted. Dude sacrificed all of his energy for his art.
Totally underrated drummer .... !! He's fucking amazing that speed and duration is very difficult to upkeep at this level !!
True, it's like surf rock level of drumming. Stephen Morris, the drummer in the video, also stated that his style was inspired by krautrock.
@@phoenixdaronco9540And Ian's voice style is a mix between Jim Morrison, Lou Reed and the vocalist of The Cramps
Well said.
Wow! Amazing words ever!
"...In this COLONY!" Punkafka, sure as shit.
I love Kafka. So I get what you mean. Art as a wound.
I was gutted to find out what happened with Ian Curtis, I really feel emotion when I watch him and listen to the music, truly moving

Ian's dancing is quite disturbing to me. It's very reminiscent of his epileptic condition, but it's extremely hypnotic the way he moves. Like he's in a trance and like he's body is barely able to contain his soul that's trying to rip itself out it.
The beats moved him to dance.

@syntikkamies it wasn't. that was just Ian losing himself in the music.
@syntikkamies omg. If you have an epileptic seizure you cant control any part of the body. So he would be lying on floor not able to sing
@syntikkamies if anything the dancing is a little to blame for his epilepsy; getting himself into that wild state while he performed would trigger him (along with the lights and intoxicated state he was in) into having seizures

153 thumbs up: Seven of the disciples-Peter, Thomas, Nathanael, the sons of Zebedee, and two others decided to go fishing one evening after the Resurrection of Jesus, but caught nothing that night. Early the next morning, Jesus (whom they had not recognised) called out to them from the shore:
Friends, haven't you any fish?"
When they reply "No", Jesus responds: "Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some".After doing so, "they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish".
Realising the identity of their advisor, the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" at which Peter jumped into the water to meet him, while the remaining disciples followed in the boat, towing the net, which proved to be full of 153 large fish :)

@@JSTNtheWZRD Well, no. I have epilepsy & I've never once been tempted to kill myself over it, nor did it ever make me want to get on stage. The epilepsy wasn't part of his greatness and it didn't end his life. It was just there.
It's like four different songs playing at the time-masterpiece
ste doran Good point!
You can imagine how otherworldly Joy Division must have sounded to a 70s audience. To us, they are too, but it must have been so more pronounced on the ears of a generation of music lovers raised on punk and rock n roll. Visionaries.
💯
"raised on punk" - punk had only been around for 3 years when this came out, so...
The way Bernard plays his guitar is so hypnotic for some reason
fizro yeah it’s weird.
And she's clinging to the nearest passer by,
She's lost control.
And she gave away the secrets of her past,
And said I've lost control again,
And a voice that told her when and where to act,
She said I've lost control again.
And she turned around and took me by the hand and said,
I've lost control again.
And how I'll never know just why or understand,
She said I've lost control again.
And she screamed out kicking on her side and said,
I've lost control again.
And seized up on the floor, I thought she'd die.
She said I've lost control.
She's lost control again.
She's lost control.
She's lost control again.
She's lost control.
Well I had to 'phone her friend to state my case,
And say she's lost control again.
And she showed up all the errors and mistakes,
And said I've lost control again.
But she expressed herself in many different ways,
Until she lost control again.
And walked upon the edge of no escape,
And laughed I've lost control.
She's lost control again.
She's lost control.
She's lost control again.
She's lost control.
