So, what makes somebody a bad scuba diver in your eyes? Is it all the gear and no idea? Somebody who swaps computers to avoid surface interval because they skipped a stop? Let us know below.

For me, it’s buddies who don’t follow the dive plan after 30 seconds into the dive.
Second to them is buddies who ack the 100 bar turnaround ... then swim in the opposite direction to the dive boat & refuse to turnaround*. Leaving one in the invidious position of deciding whether to continue to buddy & risking a low air situation before back on boat or doing the return as a solo diver.
    * Had one so-called buddy who had no interest in returning to the boat. His attitude (I discovered during the dive) was: “No skipper will risk their professional ticket by leaving a diver behind, so wherever I surface they will find & come & get me.” Needless to say, during the surface interval I found a reason to tag in with another buddy pair. Leaving this guy with no option but to formally buddy with the Divemaster for the second dive.

Wow the last story really shocked me. At the end of the day, it‘s OUR responsibility to bring them back. Acting like this is just extremely disrespectful towards the Agency.

During my open water course in Sharm there were two lads in the group who nearly didn't pass. One got too far from his buddy, and ploughed past me and my buddy, kicking him in the face, completely oblivious to anyone else.
Another trip I had a week of bad buddies, like the one who didn't bother making a mental note of what I looked like, so followed some other idiot down 10m+ below our maximum depth while I and others signaled for them both to come back up (apparently they didn't know what thumbs up meant!). By the end of the week the dive master even commented I'd had no luck with buddies so he and I paired up and I actually got in a few good dives.
Then there was the time I took my dad out. We'd spent 5 years in Jeddah back in the early 80s, so he was an experienced BSAC diver. As it had been more than 6 months since either of us last dived, the center's policy was to do a check dive which was fine as it gave us a chance to check equipment and buoyancy. We went through what to do if you have no air and need to use your buddy's secondary, watched two other pairs do it, and then it came to me. I swam up to dad, gave the signal of no air, took my reg out and went to grab his secondary. His eyes glazed over and he grabbed both my wrists. So I'm 6m down, slowly breathing out, my reg is taunting me as it floats there, and I have no way to get it. The dive master rushed over, gave me my reg, pulled us apart and cautiously I went through the steps again, this time dad got it right. He said his mind just went blank.
On the last day, we were doing a drift dive when something grabbed me from behind and turned me to the blue. I looked over my shoulder and saw my dad holding my BCD, doing something. Then the dive master again came racing over and pulled him away. He'd spotted a small stream of bubbles coming from the top of the tank and had signaled the dive master. Not an issue, just keep an eye on it, but he then decided to try and fiddle with it. We were 18m down, and could have quite easily been in a real "got no air, give me yours" situation, which hadn't gone so great the first time!
Looking back it was most probably early signs of the normal pressure hydrocephalus he was later diagnosed with.
Despite all that, it was a good holiday. I hired an underwater video camera, filmed a manta ray, saw several sharks, did my first night dive, which reminds me, the new dive master lost her bearings and took us outside the roped off safe area, we know this because a boat went over us with it's propeller too close for comfort!

The diver that stirs up the bottom, destroying multiple square feet of coral, shining a light in the eyes of other divers in an attempt to photograph a Goliath grouper who wanted absolutely nothing to do with the diver. Might have seen it this week. Might have filmed it this week. Super frustrating. Stay away from THAT diver.

Genuinely i have been on a dive with one or two ‘new’ divers, whilst i say new they did have a nice bit of experience beneath their bel. However, on one occasion they may feel a bit too big for their boots on a dive site they have become to familiar with and are not aware of new hazards. Dive sites can change all the time, hazards such as migratory fish or invasive species may not have been their at first and so may be new and present a threat even an experienced diver may not be ready for. I have had it where this was the case and a new diver almost lost their fins to an angel shark they nearly perched on top of

There are so many behaviours that can make a bad scuba diver, one that comes in my mind is also someone that swim everywhere not caring of others. E.g. when I was photoshooting to a nice redfish and he passed and stopped between the camera and the fish untill the fish was gone. 🙄

Divers that stand up underwater (on corals, wrecks, etc), and those that chase the wildlife around to get the "perfect shot" (I'm guilty of that one sometimes... :/ ), those that don't listen to instructions...

Hi i am an old pro diver (hardhead & scuba ) i like your way of telling people to you s there heads with diving, tell them the depth 's and stops for deep water, and what deep water can do the body if you don t follow the decompression times. I dove for twenty years , and didn t got the bench ever, because were keeping a strong rule of decompression tables

Arrogance! I was once in a dive shop on holiday and got chatting with a lady who was going to be my buddy for a wall/reef boat dive. Her aim was to get 24 dives in 2 weeks so she'd have 50 total and could be a PADI Master Scuba Diver. She'd just finished Rescue and completed her specialities with 'Aware', Fish ID and Underwater Videographer. She proudly announced to the group she'd therefore completed all diver training and would be happy to advise any of us if we had questions. The others in the group comprised 3 experienced MSDs, 2 instructors and 3 DMs, but she hadn't bothered to ask about the rest of us. And yes, she was as bad as you're thinking, including ignoring her buddy (me) and the dive leader, repeatedly swimming down the wall to 40 metres to film, getting low on air and thereby shortening the dive for the whole group.

To me a bad diver is one who doesn’t appreciate the environment they’re in. Kicking coral and dragging gear is like taking a 4x4 through a nature preserve and it horrifying to watch.

Try Tech diving, apparently the newbies are much better than those who have been doing it for a while, never make a mistake, it is always conditions buddy, or something else. Gear one-upmanship is another issue. However you have to ask where the rest of the team is? Interestingly enough I always dived with a team when I was tecking, and if someone could not hold position on a stop it was back to the lake, before diving with the team again.

I have numerous dives (600) but done in groupings over many years (50). Have gone to places like Cozumel, doubled up with divers w/ minimal experience because of my age but have enjoyed just being there. I am looking forward to more challenging places with flora and fauna. Lived in Samoa, so get the pelagic scene. Where should I go this fall in the Caribbean?

Lack of buoyancy control and always finning around disturbing the bottom really annoys me especially as I am a photographer.
Personally I put this down to poor training and the instructors are to blame, but it can also be due to lack of practice by those who don't dive frequently.

The worst diver is one who ignores his limits. Not necessarily his instructors fault. I have dived with a guy who had dived extensively in the red sea, and came to the UK, wanted his first dive to be the Aolean Skye, in 3M Viz, he had a very bad dive as he could not find his buddy or the shot, and ended up on the surface after 10 mins. He learnt that a log book filled with 1000's of dives in iin the bath that is the Red Sea does not qualify you for a 32m dive in poor viz.
