How to Fit an Isolation Valve on Copper Water Pipe

- Isolation valves are a wonderful thing and Roger loves fitting them wherever he can. You might recognise this boiler room, it's the fourth episode we've shot in here. This job takes a while so you'll also get a bit of Roger's insight, some gripes, plumbing history and general musings from a man that has much to share with the audience that he loves.
Isolation valves or service valves are a life and time saver. We'll show you how to fit an isolation valve to copper water pipes so that your appliances can be disconnected from the main water supply quickly and easily.
We prefer an isolating valve with a handle and the one used in our video is an Intaball Lever Ball Valve with red handle from Altecnic Plumbing and Heating Supplies.

It might seem a bit obvious but to us less confident it would be nice to see an example of how best to measure the fitting for the amount of pipe to cut out to accommodate the valve!
Use a couple of pieces of off cut pipe, say 150mm long each. Insert them into the valve and measure the total length. The excess over 300mm is the figure you need.
Love watching skill builder vids. Taught me how to solder. Just fitted two new radiators in my extension, SDS chiseled my floor up, layed two new pipes, plumed everything together. I sit behind a desk all day. That was like therapy I could watch you all day long, in fact most enjoyable thing I’ve seen today. Can you put those valves on potable supplies. I use ball valves but they tend to weep over time.

Yes they are good for high pressure and potable supplies. The cheap ball valves are a liability but lots of people fit them just to tick a box. Then it is somebody else's problem.

I searched for how to fit a compression valve into a run of pipe. But with one end loose, its the same as fitting a valve onto new work - thanks for showing the PTFE tip, so I learned something. I'd really like to see how to fit one in a run of pipe where there is no play in one of the ends of piping.

I am adding isolation valves for my 1st floor shower in preparation for a bathroom remodel. I normally would sweat in a valve, but there is no way I will be able to fully stop the water flow so going with compression valves makes sense and it sure looks a lot easier. I have never seen anyone put Teflon tape on the compression ring, but since I am concerned about leaks I think I will give it a go. Thanks mate.
. Thanks, you just solved a problem . I didn't know they made ball values with compression fittings. Now I won't burn down my house trying to solder one in.

Little PTFE round an olive goes a long way. Lived by that for years. Like you believe in helping the next person out. I also put in a isolated loop with one radiator to a combi boiler so you can drain down but keep hot water on for the customer.
Or a little bit of Hawk White paste would be equally just as good. It's good stuff.

You are the only one on YT to show it being done on an installed pipe. All the videos on YT show valves and compression couplings being fitted onto loose pieces of pipe on a bench.
A child could do that. The problem is where there is no give in the pipe.
I have been trying to find how to insert a piece of copper pipe between two compression fittings to join two pipes with no give, without success.
You need a slip coupling. They are available as repair couplings solder or compression.

Those full bore lever ball valves are brilliant. I have long since given up fitting gate valves. They are way too unreliable as they invariably leak or let by!!!

Chanesmyname they are good when you have no other option- but £40 vs a fiver... plus the system was drained down
@@markroper6188 I know that price difference is chunky but saving the trouble of draining down and for the speed of the fit and for a one off item, I like the ease of it and I think there is less than go wrong with the fit too - no undue pressure on pipe lengths to tweak at other joints when flexing them to fit into the pipe cut out...no pipe slice either. :) Lazy and lacking great skills I admit it and that aladin valve is best for me as an odd job and not a being a well-skilled plumber. :)

I used to use ptfe on the olives but now use Jet Lube V-2 Plus, never had a leak yet, any experience of this or thoughts?
TheP Jet lube is the way mate. PTFE on a olive is bad news

I noticed you wound the PTFE tape (@3:30) the same way for both the left and right olives - doesn't that mean that the right hand tape is going to "undo" when you tighten your nut?

The olive doesn't move as the nut is tightened so there is no tendency
Real plumbers don’t use ptfe on olives we use jet lube

I'm at the same point. I need to know how much copper to remove from 3/4" copper pipe before installing the ball valve. Worse, it runs through joists that are 2 feet apart.
Ensure the valves are full bore and check if they have an arrow for flow direction.
I usually tighten the fittings, loosen them off and apply PTFE then finally retighten.
What do you think about the self-tapping Aladdin isolators?
Should I change all my 30 year old Gate Valves for Lever Valves on next drain down of Hot/Cold and CH? - Some Gate Valves stiff as hell to turn!

It's a split ring compression fitting spanner 15mm / 22mm. On Ebay for about £12, or Amazon for a couple of quid more.

Offset the valves. Use jointing compound. Mark the pipe before you cut. The full bore lever valve handles should always fall into the off postion, against the flow.
If your gonna show someone how to do something, do it right. For there benifit.

@@ciaranamhain I've worked in boiler houses for about 30 years.
All lever op valves must fall to close, any valve which has the potential to cause damage to a system would be lockshield or similar.
In fairness there's so many safety interlocks nowadays that any closed valve would protect and stop the system anyway.
At 1:35 you are cutting some pipe to install a ball valve, how much did you cut off ? What's the measurement ? Thanks
The lever valve unlike a ballofix doesn't have a direction of flow as being a lever valve it should always fall to close.
Hi Roger, out of pure interest, and I know the unit is a fairly costly initial outlay, but why do many plumbers not use one of the lovely Rothenburger Pipe Freezers?
I've used one a few times before to replace radiators and they are a godsend in terms of speed.
I have used the electric freezers but most of the time there are ways and means that are straightforward.

I'm replacing the radiators on one floor and want to put some lever valves in so I can shut down the flow and return on that floor and have the heating for the rest of the house up and running while i modify the pipe work up to the new radiators, might take a week or so with the additional work to the walls/plaster etc. Is there any reason I can't use these valves for this purpose? It's a big house and takes a long time to drain down!

P.T.F.E on the olive is fine but wrapped around the thread on a compression fitting is fairly pointless imo. Fernox LS-X and hawkwhite both have their place.
Swanseal is my favourite gunk
I did a kitchen in the summer and client did their own plumbing all with compression fittings I think he must have used about 5 rolls of tape. Olives threads the whole works all taped up.
I'm a jet lube v2 man, coz I'm special. Lol
great video again, i wonder what you think and what you've heard of about those isolating valves that clamp on and pierce the pipe? I know they're only supposed to be for jobs where you can't turn off the mains water but would still be interested in your thoughts. Cheers !

Could you have fitted an Aladin isolator valve? You can use them on live feeds too.

Hello Roger i have question when i put thw water on in the bathroom and turn the water on in the kitchen the pressure is droping can it be fix ?
You can only get out what you put in. If the pressure is low on the mains you won't get much out. Have you got a combi boiler?
I noticed you put the ptfe tape on same way as the direction of nut on the left. Then did the same on the right olive opposite direction of the nut. Is this normal ?
It doesn't matter because it is on the olive and the olive doesn't turn

I have to fit an external expansion tank to my combi boiler, so I know I need to put a Tee in the return pipe to the boiler to feed my new expansion tank.
I don't want to drain the system.
Can't I buy a freeze kit and freeze the pipe below the Tee and close off the isolator to the boiler above the Tee so only a small of water will spill out the bit of pipe below the isolator valve.
Be easier to draw a diagram I know . . Tried to be as descriptive as I can!
You can buy a tee that is made for this very job. It makes a tiny hole in the pipe and that is plenty to allow the expansion vessel to work.

You’re sounding like an electrician.
"Picking up the wrong end of the stick," is derived from Roman plumbing. They would have communal latrines with streams diverted through two channels. One for sitting over to flush through the poo etc and another into which they would dip a stick with a sponge tied to the end for washing ones derrière. Then the stick/sponge would be put back down for the next bloke to pick up... and then the next... and then the next and so on.
The rule of thumb comes from, don't use a stick thicker than your thumb, to beat your wife.....

Roger, love your work. Quick question...I’ve been fitting isolating ball valves on all of my pipework during my bathroom refit that I’m doing. They work for me. Anyway I’ve been told that they will reduce the flow and I should have used full bore valves like you have in this video. Some of them are for my new bath, sink, toilet etc. Should I replace them all before it’s too late? Thanks in advance, Chris.
Hi Chris
The problem with isolating valves is that they weep around the glands unless you spend a lot on them and when you spend a lot they tend to be full bore. Most plumbers I know wouldn't touch an isolating valve when carrying out a repair or service. You go in to service a tap and end up having to drain down and replace the valve.
Now they are in I would leave them. If you have mains pressure they won't slow the flow much, if it is tank fed you might want to remove them on the shower and fit full bore.
Thanks for the swift reply Roger! So far I have just removed the old suites and put the isolating ball valves on so that I could refill the system for the rest of the house. It’s not too late, I could drain down again and remove them when I fit the new suite. I’m going to fit the abacus wall mounted system and will have a gasket like in your video to individually control each service for future maintenance.
I had no idea the ball valves were so unreliable.

What about if I drain down again and fit full bore gate valves on my hot and cold feeds?

Does the direction of the PTFE tape matter? I'd assume not given the olive is just compressed and not rotated? I'd assume you would want to avoid it backing up on itself?
Out of habit I run it clockwise but, as you say it only sits there and has no thread sealing function.

He didn't. If you watch the video he plays with the pipe to give himself more room to fit the valve in. When it doesn't work, he cuts off a tiny bit more.
Trial and error. Push the pipe as much as you can or cut off a bit more.

@@seanditch4419 it doesn't have have to be super precise. just cut a little and try again if you still don't have enough room. If you cut too much by accident you can always buy a length of 15mm copper pipe for less than a tenner and patch up the gap.
Or if you're really worried about it, you can buy self-cutting isolation valves which are pretty much fool-proof but I don't think plumbers will recommend them because it's not the "proper" way to do it but it worked for a lot of diyers.

I've seen those Aladdin self cutting valves and was told that they themselves would only use them in an extreme emergency, because apparently they fail quite quickly.

@@seanditch4419 I have a self cutting valve for an outdoor spigot that's been there since before I moved in and it hasn't leaked yet. It reduces the water pressure a little bit though. It's not as good but it's not bad either.

Why not freeze the pipe Roger instead of draining a large system down and then having the hassle of bleeding a dozen rads , that's what I would do , I've got a couple of those open ring spanners and I agree they are brilliant also Kopex make the best pipe slices I have ever used

Yensabi, I have done a bit of freezing in my time but I was removing the old towel rail and re-routing the supplies. I couldn't lift the floor so I did the whole job at arm's length with some push-fits. These jobs are stressful enough without putting myself under extra time pressure. The time I froze a mains pipe and went out to the van for the spare gas canister and the van had been towed away still lives in my memory.

On the original internet talkboards was a DIY group. Was a little clique that thought they ran the place & the usual forum sycophants. They would always bleat on about how you shouldn't use PTFE tape, it should be a cold weld..etc etc. Any other view was shouted down. Kind of people who would argue with a wall.

PTFE always a good idea on brass olives, they're crap. I don't do it with copper olives. Buy a new pipe slice you old miser! EDIT: Ha! Still watching, just got to the comment about the pipe slice being worn out. Could have put a new system in waiting for it to cut!
Putting the screw in your mouth: Fitting a loo for an old couple, floorboards soaked in piss. Drilled pilot holes for pan screws and switched drill bit for screw driver bit, put the drill bit in my mouth and thought, hmmmm that's salty! 30 Years ago, never forgotten it.
Bit of paste would of done the same job as the PTFE
some people like paste but I think it ends up in filters and the like.
Why not plan how you are going to lengthen the pipe before you cut it?
