In this video, I share my design plans for renovating the bedroom of my 120-year-old Victorian duplex in Nova Scotia. I dive into my inspirations, limitations, and sources for materials, while using clips that didn't fit into the main video.
Initially inspired by Scandinavian design, we take a look at my time living in Denmark, my bedroom there, and look at how I aim to recreate the cozy, minimalist style I adore in my new home. I show how I use Milanote, an organizational tool, to gather my thoughts, images, and inspirations into a cohesive plan. The design approach includes warm wood tones, natural materials like jute and plants, and a clean white and bright green palette.
However, due to budget constraints and limited local resources, my final bedroom design took a shart U-turn and evolveed into a Scandinavian-inspired folk art style. I incorporated a thrifted duvet cover with vibrant colors and whimsical patterns as the centerpiece, and this broader color scheme allowed me to find matching thrifted items more easily.
I also share my plans to upcycle furniture, such as painting a dresser with Norwegian Rosemaling patterns (although time constraints prevented me from completing it before leaving for a work contract).

I love the elements of the room. And it's important to be flexible. I'm looking forward to seeing it come together!
@@Hippiechick11 Thank you! It's gonna be so much fun!
@@ShannonMakes I am going to check it out..thanks
Once upon a time I was an Interior Designer, and I can tell you from experience that what you do with a central item as your theme is solid design practice: start with what you love and build your theme around that. Also, as soon as I saw both schematics you came up with for the bedroom, I thought to myself "Oh, yeah, that's new, modern, white and neutral Scandinavian design versus old, antique rosemaling, richly colored Scandinavian design," and then you referenced that later. 😄 How fun! I've done both in my own homes, but I have to say that the more richly colored antique style appeals to me far more than the white and neutrals with greenery I've done in the past. Can't wait to see the final results!
Thank you for the professional input!! 🤩
I agree! And to me the darker scheme really goes more with the feel of the house itself
, hey there 👋 such fun to watch. Have you been to Frenchie's (thrift) store? I lived in n.s. ❤️for 1 1/2 years. 🌊
I love seeing what happens when your inspiration shakes hands with availability.
🥰🥰✨🤝♻️
I definitely prefer plan B, but I'll always take more color over white and beige. I've spent far too much time in apartments where I couldn't paint the walls
solid point!
I second that for much the same reason! I’m just worn out of rental beige and loving rich color however I can sneak it into my home. I’m looking forward to next week’s video to see how Shannon brings it all together!
I love that you want to learn Rosemaling!!! It can be a bit of a challenge when first starting out, but once you get the hang of it, it's quite relaxing. Rosemaling came out of the Norwegian National Romantic period (1814-early 1900s). This was a time in Norwegian history where Norway was rediscovering its true Norwegian identity after having been a part of Denmark for nearly 400 years. Rosemaling has various kinds, depending on the part of the country it originates from. This is also around the same time that Norwegian Bunads were designed/created and many dresses will have embroidery that is very similar to what rosemaling looks like.
Well I certainly wouldn't try to do *actual* rosemaling (thanks for the pronunciation), but just... something inspired by it. Something cozy and bright and handmade, but without worry about using traditional motifs!
We have something similar to Rosemaling in Sweden but here it's called 'kurbits' or 'kurbitsmålning'. I believe IKEA has played around with kurbits patterns for different textiles through the years.
It's really hard to choose between the 2 plans. I like parts of both plans. I would love to start with plan 2 and add elements from plan 1, especially the plants and warm wood tones. Looking forward to the next video.
I've decided you are the queen of making ad spots relevant. Holy moly. So good.
hahahha omg, thank you!
Agreed. It doesn't even feel like an ad, and I WANT to watch it to see the design process. Totally seamless, highly relevant, and actively engaging. 10/10 would watch "ad" again. 😁
I'm a big fan of Plan B! The accent colors were called Harvest Gold, Avocado Green, and Burnt Orange when I was first starting out in the 70s and I've had them in my kitchen ever since (yes, I have Harvest Gold appliances). Since the colors have come in and out of fashion so many times (and under different names) I never have a problem finding accent pieces or replacements in the thrift store. They are such happy colors, I can't wait to see how the room turns out!
Thanks for sharing!!
I like both designs though with the greyness of the weather often in NS a lot of the year I lean toward the brighter vibrant choice. Either way, happy designing!
so Denmark is FAR worse in terms of amounts of gray skies and darkness, and I always wonder if that's why they lean towards the whites so much - to reflect as much light as possible!!
I think your duvet cover choice was serendipitous as you managed to find a good selection of matching items to go with it and the green paint should go nicely as well:-D
Very serendipitous indeed!
Honestly, the cute folk art is the only thing that really separates Scandinavian design from Japanese to me. When you first talked about Scandinavian, I pictured kind of what you ended up with. I just think those designs make a huge difference in the whole plan. I can’t wait to see your fancy bedroom and your fancy painting. Thanks for another wonderful video.
I don’t think blankets and fells have as central a place in Japanese functionalism as they do in Scandinavian “funkis”.
Is there anything better than knowing a video is on the way! Love all of your videos!
Thank you!!
I don't have an ounce of decorating skill in my bones so I have no opinion about either style, but I love watching you put your house together. The Milanote thing was really cool! I'm probably the only one watching who goes "CORGI!" every time she pops up in your videos. It made the Milanote thing so much fun to watch so thank you for doing that. The place where you are where you throw sticks for the pup is absolutely beautiful. You are so lucky to spend time in these places. Hope you have a great training camp! 😊
the original idea was very pretty, but oh i *adore* the bright colors and blue lean of the second one! its right up my alley, so vibrant and fun 😍
Plan B. Love the colors! Use the other plan for a secondary bedroom (guest room).
love it!
I like both of your scan styles. You said in an earlier video this is your for now bedroom, later this room becomes a guest room & then you do your botanical scan style in your main bedroom.
I always find an inspiration piece to design a room around. It can be fabric, or a picture I want to display, or a piece of pottery, etc. The rooms I designed without an inspiration piece don’t come together like they should.
I NEVER follow trends. There has been a trend of everything Grey, not for me. I think picking something that you really like that you already own as a starting point is pretty normal. I have a beautiful green teapot and every time I saw it my heart would be happy. I went to the paint store, to look for the same color green paint I couldn't believe my eyes they had the same color. So I bought the paint and painted my kitchen that color. Decorating is so personal and is a place where people can create. I believe that you are going to make your home an extension of yourself. You are creative, and you will make your home a lovely place to go to, to relax after you are finished with your acrobatic tours and performances and it is time to go home to relax, regroup and get ready for the next performance tour.
I prefer the folklore look :) Therefore I am happy that it organically evolved in that direction 😊
That duvet cover is amazing! Plus, I love that you get to take your pup with you on your travels. ❤
thank you! 💚💙💜
Congratulations on achieving 100,000 subscribers! I so enjoy your weekly home updates. The before and after photos show just how much work you have done. Greetings from Toronto 🇨🇦
Thank you so much!
Hello Shannon, I don’t normally comment on these posts even though I enjoy watching them. I just wanted to say that I’m loving your channel and particularly my Saturday mornings when I sit down with my coffee and tune in for your latest posts.
I’m in Australia and that’s when they seem to land. I like to start my days slowly and serenely and watching your posts over my morning coffee sets my day up perfectly 😊😊. I also have particularly lovely memories of my visit to Nova Scotia so seeing the progress on your beautiful home is doubly pleasing and interesting. Keep on doing what you do and thank you for the pleasure you bring to people. Gorana from Melbourne, Australia 🎉❤😊
Thank you! So glad you've got your Saturday morning tradition... it almost makes me feel like I get to spend a bit of MY Saturday mornings in Australia, one of the few continents I've never visited 🥹🥹
I like the Folk art style. It feels warm and cozy for a bedroom, and the winters there will be cold and white. Maybe your kitchen would be cute with your first style, or if you have a sunroom. But anything you create will be beautiful.
I have lived a budget for a very long time, so I have used the "work with what you have" approach. I love garage sales and thrift stores. I love the solid bright colors in the duvet. The green paint looks to be pretty close to what you need. I can't wait to see how you have pulled it all together.
Thank you 😊
I love the colourful folk art direction
Just thinking that if you do the walls in a soft green then use all of the decorative elements you have on hand, for now, it could transition nicely in a few years when you do find the botanical linens. All the colourful stuff would make a great guest room.
Love the bright color of the second option. White and neutral is like the "Sad Beige" trend. BORING, sterile, impersonal, giving off hospital waiting room vibes.
The duvet cover you thrifted looks like it was inspired by the Voynich Manuscript, and I LOVE it. Excellent color choices, as you could easily pivot to MCM. Mustard, burnt umber, rust, avocado green, etc. can be so flexible on interior design. Folk, MCM, Scandi; very adaptable for future decor refreshes.
White and neutral is restful and calming.
I LOVE color, but I did also very much love my Danish room, which was still very white and neutral, but with those cozy pops of color, so I would be happy either way!
The desings on the print also looks a lot Like german Bauernmalerei witch was really big in the 70. I remeber my aunt had a dresser done in that style. It was not difficult the flowers/petals where mostly done by placing different clours on the paintbrush and confidently „twirling“ it on the sureface. Tara!
@@hiwakoo yea, that seems like something I'd try too... confidently twirling! There are lots of cultures with similar styles in their folk art traditions - Ukraine comes to mind, and we saw a lot in Romania as well. I think while the specific motifs differ from culture to culture, the general aesthetic resonates with many cultures!
The vibes you get from white and neutrals totally depend on the textures in my opinion. Just adding a sheepskin pad to the classic “egg” chair makes it so much more inviting and less “waiting room”-like.
Antique Scandinavian design will always get my vote, I can hardly wait for the reveal!
Bonjour Shannon. Salutations amicales Shannon. Hélène 😊 (Marseille France)
Yes to the folk style with rosemaling! Reminds me of my grandma's little knick- knacks she had around her house.
Plan B would suit me best. But which ever one your do, will be beautiful .😊
thank you! 💚💙💜
I love all the pivots you made. I do think the new dresser painting goes so well with your new theme I’m excited to see that painting project!
I absolutely love Plan B. I absolutely love color everywhere.
COLOURRRR!!
Plan B makes me think of you! It seems like so much more fun! The fact that you’ll have a clean and organized sleeping space is priceless!
It's funny that Plan B makes you think of me, when Plan A was already curated, lived in and well loved by me (no judgement, just sharing that it makes me giggle)! Plan B will be cozy too though!!
The curtains are fab! They’ll help keep the room warm or cool and will block out light so you get better sleep! (I just got some ikea velvet curtains in a similar shade. They do indeed keep the cold out as well as the heat! I love them)
I like the second design colors & plans better because like you, they are as bright, bold, cheerful & whimsical as you are, Shannon.😍🤗
I loved your first decorative bedroom image but as a snow-loving, cold-embracing Maine woman, your second presentation introduces colors and textures that one can appreciate on a chilly winter evening. I have a bedroom with green walls and so love the contrast when everything is covered in brilliant white snow outside my windows, especially in the darker months. I change things up for spring ,summer and fall with pillow shams and sheets. It makes seasonal decorative changes easy, affordable and refreshing. Great job Shannon!
Thank you! 🥳🥳
I’d go with plan B. Nice warm, cozy colors.
I love the Plan B Scandinavian folk art theme. It reminds me of fabric that I got to make a quilt for myself that I can’t seem to find a good pattern for. I can’t wait to see what you did in next week’s video.
I’m here for the Corgi sploots. The rest is gravy…which I also love!
😂😂
I am glad you ended up with plan B. I love rosemaling and the colored version so much more!
I love the new design - the old one is nice, but the new one has so much more charm!
Thank you! 🥳
You should choose what makes you happy and content, with a life as busy as yours you need a space that provides peace and tranquility. Living your new content but love that you include moments of our old channel content.
Yes, of course, totally agree! I would never choose something that I didn't like, and I'm not asking viewer's opinions because I will make my decisions based on their input (remember, that room was made-over and done a full year ago). I just like hearing people's thoughts and opinions!
I have designed each room in my home around one thing: my bedroom - the duvet cover, the bathroom - a graphic novel (Gotham by Gaslight, Steampunk Batman), my kitchen - a victorian chemistry set, my living room - an Assassin's Creed statue, my spare room - an Indian patchwork wall hanging. Having that one thing to tie the theme onto stops me getting overcomplicated and overwhelmed 😊
Very fun!! Sounds like your house is amazing!
@ShannonMakes hubby and I love it 😊
I adore the history and good memories that come with thrifted decor, so plan B automatically gets my vote. Unless you found your first Ikea sheets thrifting or on deep discount, they would not feel as special to me. The thrill of the hunt for treasure and your creative upcycling vs off the shelf purchases is what keeps me excited to see whatever you're up to Shannon. 😻
it is kinda fun to have a story behind everything!!
I like B because it's new to me. The rich colors seem more luxurious and comfortable to me. But I am a baroque girl lol I love over the top fur and gilded massive dressers and beds. The Scandinavia style seems pretty to look out but too bright and stiff for sleeping and relaxing.
Well I can vouch for plan A being incredibly cozy for me personally (turn on some twinkle lights, light some candles and hunker down with a book, and those mushrooms, and it’s uber cozy in my experience), but plan B is a bit more “eclectic summer cottage in the woods”!!
I’ve eyed that duvet cover at IKEA before. Can’t wait to see what you do with that theme.
I really love the Scandinavian Folklore theme you came up with. Scandinavian Botanicals would have looked classy, but this is way more fun! Serendipitous indeed!
The serendipity of finding all of those coordinating pieces at the thrift store makes me think Plan B is the one. I like both but I loooove those colors. And thanks for showing us Canelle's stomping grounds - it's beautiful!😻
I totally agree!
To be honest I would be delighted with either aesthetics, they are very cosy and easy on the eye. I just love listening to your thought processes. Can't wait to see them in reality.
thank you! 💚💙💜
Hi, Shannon. I’m drawn to the Scandinavian style. I especially love the mushroom dresser. The Norwegian scenery reminds me of northern Ontario… so beautiful❤️ I wish you, Noah, and Cannel safe travels ❤️❤️❤️
"Loki" love? at 16:33. Ha ha. I love this tool and your design process. Very inspiring.
hahah ;-)
I'm so glad you are going with more color. I feel like neutral rooms are for show, not for living. Life needs color. Late watching this one and so excited for the next video and not having to wait a full week. LoL.
I mean, I will say (as much as I love color), my danish room was SUPER cozy and lived in, and I loved it.... but I am also happy with lots of color and bright warmness too!!
A lot of decision making for me revolves around figuring out limitations to narrow down options, so picking an item to inform the rest of the design makes perfect sense to me. I think of your two designs I'd probably be somewhere in between. I love a vintage botanical piece of art but prefer more colors like the second.
I LOVE orange velvet! Those pillows were a total score! (As well as the napkins which could turn into a patchwork cover for a dresser )
I've always loved the plan B print. Wilh the calm green paint and dark heavy curtains, the pops of color would be fun.
Happy accidents! When you stop trying to find a match, something unintended shows itself. The best kind luck.
Immediately when I saw the duvet cover to pivoted to, I thought, aha! Still Norwegian-ish, just more old fashioned. So I was very pleased to see you mentioned rosemaling too :)
I really like the 1st design plan, it's fresh & bright. The back up plan will work, everything came together nicely. You can keep watching for the original bedding, you might run across it later on and can always change it. I was cheering for the mushroom dresser. Looking forward to seeing it all come together, next week.
Thanks so much!
I bought my first home in December of last year, and your videos were big for empowering me to get a lot of my things from fb marketplace and eBay! My dining set, curtains, a record player, my living room media unit… I’ve saved so much money and trying to be as sustainable as possible. Thanks for the encouragement and inspiration on my own journey!
That is awesome! I LOVE hearing that 🥹🥹
I love the Rosemaling… took a class & found it incredibly relaxing! Love the colors & contrasts!
I prefer the second one :) it feels cozier. Personally. 😅
It's all about the light for me. I love deep, rich colours but they suck all the light out of rooms and I NEED light. I have learned to use lighter colours on the walls, lots of mirrors, candles and lamps and use the colours and patterns that I love as accents.
No a silly practice at all. Gives you the inspiration and springboard for more inspiration!
True1
My husband and I have done so many renovations to our various houses over the years and it’s fun to watch you do stuff ❤❤❤
That is awesome! Thank you!
Love the design planning phase, finding a focus piece and decorating around it. Love the colorful choice, very cozy. Can't wait to see the big reveal.
Thanks so much! 😊
I love your plan B. I'm of Norwegian back ground and grew up with many pieces of Rosemaling on the walls and tables. I inherited many pieces and gifted them to my grand daughter (unfortunately they were destroyed when a hurricane hit NJ a few yrs ago and they had been in storage). My mom did take a class in how to paint in the Rosemaling style and said it took too much patience for her so instead she got a stencil and decals. That can always be an option if you do want a real Rosemaling design.
I personally love color. Every room in my house has wonderful color. my main/front room is harvest gold. It goes so well with all the maple furniture. My kitchen/dining room is oatmeal to be a neutral background for all my shelves with jars filled with dry goods. Our bedroom is sapphire blue with crystal light fixtures (our birthstone colors of sapphire and diamond) with peacock blue, teal and gold.
True, true! To be fair, I am not interested in using actual rosemaling techniques or motifs, it's more the inspiration for the general aesthetic - trying to copy actual pieces or motifs sounds stressful and potentially offensive (I don't know the cultural significance behind it), so I'd rather just play around and do my own loose interpretation of it... bonus points if it takes less patience 🤣🤣
Rooms with lots of white actually cause me anxiety, so my "vote" is the warmer tones lol.
Of course it's your house, so it's your rules! I'm still greatly enjoying seeing the process of your house (also looking forward to more craft videos as well).
thank you! 💚💙💜
Wimsical folk style for me, the colours in the duvet cover are delightful, love it and cannot wait for the reveal 👍🇬🇧
thank you! 💚💙💜
Fine with either! But the one you went for seems more fun and therefore more you! 😊
Fair enough!
As a former Costume Designer will worked with a variety of theatres she performance groups, 100% using a single (or very small collection) of inspirational pieces is industry practise. Most productions also have a 'design bible' which always starts with a colour and texture pallette, selected shapes/lines, and often a keyword list describing what the mood and focus is. It helps keep all that creative energy focused!
Enjoyed the video as always - see ya with my Saturday morning coffee next weekend!
a physical design bible sounds kinda like what I've made Milanote a digital version of (and also sounds like it'd be a fun creative project to do a physical one, lol.... not that I need ANOTHER project)!!
Loved both room designs! But I think I’m like you, clean and a restful place, with that bit of fun.
Green, white, botanicals-they get my vote. Most important? What gets YOUR vote.
I'm glad to see her take on this. Why should just van girls get to use it?
I would do both. I painted my bedroom a soft white, then change out the colors in Summer and Winter. The Scandinavian colors would be perfect for spring/summer. Then use those autumnal colors in fall and winter.
I think Plan B feels cozier. But I really like the IKEA bedding in Plan A.
I'm not an interior designer by any means, but I, too, decorate rooms around certain items and have never been disappointed
Nice! The proof is in the pudding, as they say!
You are such a smart lady.I love watching your videos every week.I actually look forward too them. Can't wait too see what the house turns out like.
Thank you so much! 🫶
I'm definitely more of a bright and vibrant color person, I won't lie
I like both ideas you came up with. Personally, if I were to do it in my home, I’d do the mushroom/botanical look in my main living space. It feels more open and spacious.
Love the bright colors! Second choice for sure!
Yay curtains! I know you don't love them but i find them so much better than the bad Venetian blinds.
I AM HERE FOR A PREMIER! Woo-hoo!
Welcome! We're in the chat!
i absolutely love the second design it is just so beautiful i am blown away by how talented you are and i just love your sweet corgi he is just so darn cute . God bless everything that you all put your hands to
i've never thought to shop like that at the Op-Shop! So clever
i definitely love both. the first one I swear I have elements of that already in my bedding and my wardrobe. but the second i love how it works with wood colors so well. i can't wait to see how this comes out, and i can't wait for the future video about remaking the mushroom dresser!
I love your ideas, and would enjoy either bedroom plan personally. Since I'm married to someone with rather conservative fashion design tendencies, I'd probably have to go with the simple whites and greenery!
Wow, that certainly was a 180, but I can see that it suits you well and the colors you chose to go with the duvet cover are excellent. I'll look forward to the reveal - at the moment, I'm team A, but am open to the new plan. Besides, it's YOUR HOUSE!! And I'm sure you'll make it nice. In the past when moving, I always selected a room to become an 'oasis of sanity" in which to breathe. Clean, organized, tidy and finished enough for the moment. Now I'm deeply committed to never moving again, so long as I can manage it. Shannon, this house is indeed a massive amount of work for you but will be a showplace, I am certain.
💙💚💜
I am definitely a green girly (we have a dark green wall in the living room, lots of plants, light wood and Scandinavian furniture) so plan A is obviously my favorite (also because I'm not really into blue). but I love the folk art inspiration so I can't wait to see your bedroom makeover.
I will go with plan B. I love the blue. Also prefer the stronger colours and graphic in the folk art style. It will make a stronger statement in the room than the prettiness of the floral prints.
Shannon, I find all your videos diversified, inspiring, entertaining and interesting. Thank you for all your hard work. From Long Island, NY
You're very welcome
I do like the second option..love the colors.
Thanks so much 😊
Def voting for plan B, seems so. I h more your style, colourful, eclectic and whimsical.
I love colour, so plan B is my favourite. Looking forward to next week's video to see how it all comes together.
Thank you!
I love Plan B!! Love the duvet cover! Cannot wait until next week!
Yay! Thank you!
Hey Shannon try this site when you have the time I believe this maybe right up your alley he's an amazing artist with great wall idea's I've done a few of his techniques and they came out beautiful. I typically sit in my empty room with paper and pencil we've been renovating for 7 year's and we're so close to being done YEAHHHHHH have fun always looking forward to the next video. Happy designing from Tennessee many blessings
I liked plan A and B. It was inspiring to follow your process and really fun to watch a fellow thrifter in action, not to mention getting to see that absolutely gorgeous spot of Norway
Thank you! 🥳
This was such a fun video! I loved seeing your design progress as it organically evolved! I truly appreciated both designs. I think many people can relate to having an idea in our head that is perhaps ultimately unachievable in the short term. I certainly have my share of "dream bedroom design boards" and it was so refreshing to see the very real pivot from this one vision to something very pleasing but also very affordable and achievable! ❤
I like both designs. I love vibrant colors, and I also love white and plants. But I also think the first inspiration photo is boring… 😬 you would totally have made it very beautiful and better than the photo, especially with that green paint!!!
Thank you!! 😍
Very enjoyable chat! The white-and-green is very appealing on screen, but I suspect it might be hard to keep looking that sparkling (I've got beige and green and some areas are just trashed by the cat. White would be so much worse). The folk art/rosemaling aesthetic is more unusual and affords lots and lots of avenues for future decor projects.
True!!
The mushroom dresser is so so good. Going on my project list!
Wonderful!
I just want to send a little 'kærlighed' (love) from the west coast of Denmark. It was nice to listen to your ideas and planning and the footage from Norway (and yes, plan B for sure!) 💜
Wonderful, I'll take it! Thank you, Mona 🥰🥰
