DAY ONE in our new-to-us, 120 year old Victorian mansion in Nova Scotia. Iâm so excited for this video! I have three steamer style trunks that I didnât know what to do with and now Iâve been inspired!
You got this!
Those of you who thinks or feels that God doesn't care. That He is indifferent and or mean etc âŠ. Are you wondering why the world is as it is, so much evil everywhere⊠where is God and His faithfulness⊠why does so much so bad happen?..... Well God does not miss it, none of it.... Please keep reading and understand things better and let this truth help you.... Evil things happen because there is sin and people sin. There is a way out of it all, evil, sickness, pain, heartbreak, demons, lies and so for.... Read everything here, please just read it and really listen because it is how to get out of so much hardship đ God does judge sin which is evil and if people don't stop sinning , doing evil then they will die for that disobedience, that sin, that evil. In the garden of Eden, when God said if you take from that tree you will die He was saying if you disobey, you sin, I will punish that sin because God does punish it, sickness, demons and death. And if you keep sinning I will punish you to the point of death, is that punishment. Sickness is a consequence of sin and it is a judgement God makes upon the people for their sin. All sickness takes its toll on the body and will result in death unless you stop sinning and that brings a reward from God for the righteous decision to stop sinning that brought that illness. Throughout scripture God tells us these things. God does love and there is mercy in His punishment too. Scripture says He chastises those He loves and He does love us and dies punish sin. His wrath doesn't mean He doesn't love, it doesn't mean there is no mercy, it means He puts His law first and He obeys it first. He is slow to His wrath. He punished sin and then punishes sin and so forth and if someone doesn't stop sinning or sins more then that judgment is death just as He said, sin is death. Scripture says we are all responsible for working out our salvation with fear and trembling. Seek scripture, learn who He is and what He said to obey it. if you obey Him you live in blessings just like Deuteronomy 28 says and it also says disobedience is curses, it's punishment, that's sickness, demons possibly and again to continue in sin results in death. God told all the details, and paid for us to get out of sin and how we should live and when people don't live righteous then the world looks like it did in the days of Noah, violence, drunkenness and such lovers of self, pleasure and all sin and life apart from God, life in disobedience to God. Why should He bless sin? He punishes it then punishes sin more if someone keeps sinning. Is it tough people die from that choice they make, their sin and lack of seeking God to obey what He said, yes it hurts. How do you think God feels, He loved the world so much He gave His only begotten son and Yeshua died in agony for us to be out of that sin, taking God's wrath upon Himself so how do I think He feels, grieved so grieved but I know from scripture He always obeys what His word says, He never changes and that includes every word He said. Now Yeshua took God's wrath upon Himself for our sin Isaiah 53. We get peace with God and can come before Him to be heard and we get to be cleansed from our iniquities, sin. Just like the lamb sacrifices in the old testament Jesus was that for us a peace offering and forgiveness offering. We get freedom from that sinful past, from that sin and we get our healings because His stripes healed us from the consequences of sin. He gave us a way out. A way to start again out of that wrath. How loving is that God gave us His son who took God's wrath for us out of love. How loving just how loving is our God who made a way for us to be out of that wrath? Wrath we deserved by our sin and continued sin. But God so loved the world He gave us Yeshua. Yeshua gave His life to rise to life for us to give us new life. A new creation to begin again a new life, having been born again. Having received forgiveness for sin and a pardon from God's wrath, that very wrath you talk about. But God gave us a way out of His wrath when Yeshua, our lamb paid for our sin. Again how loving is that! Our way out of God's wrath. Our new life. Our second chance to live rightly, that's righteous, before our Holy righteous God. Our being born again to live right because God planned for us to not all receive His wrath for things we did, sin. Yet His son for everyone, one for everyone and a way out, pardoned and free to live life righteous, whole, healed, delivered, how loving oh so very loving that is. All that is in scripture too. Seek and find, learn who He is and obey and see more of it. Read Mark 4:24 the more you obey God the more He reveals to you, it means that. Read Matthew 6:33 live it daily and understand who He is and just how loving He always is and honestly how loved you are will be seen felt and KNOWN too. đ Read all scripture and read it often while listening to every word. That's needed to understand. May you come to understand Him all your days seeking and finding in scripture and growing in the knowledge of God, we know Him and His ways from scripture alone. in Yeshua's mighty name đ there are many misconceptions and lies in the world about God and people should spend time seeking Him and they will see that and better yet, the truth about Him for themselves. Trust God and learn who He is in scripture and obey it all. Believe Him because you should and trust what He said you truly can because He never fails, every word of scripture is truth. Read scripture often and ponder each word to understand what it says, then Obey it.
I have one very similar, but with a rounded top. It sat in my grandparent's stairwell closet for over a century. I decided to pull the nasty brown paper & found a charming image of a girl and a dog. Unfortunately I dinged the corner before I knew it was there. I also store blankets in it.
The verbal faux pas in the final moments was too funny. Thank you for leaving it in. Love the trunks. The basket weave pattern pressed into the sheet metal is beautiful. Leaving the piece unpainted highlights the construction method.
đ thank you
Oh You Did That! So nice! I really love the design of that lining paper, creating a custom print of it was a great solution!
Thanks so much! đ
Wow! Great job with preserving the central image and border for the trunk lid. Really good tips. Also - how awesome is that tin basketweave?
Very awesome!!
Beautiful project!
Thank you! đ
I admire how you appreciate the trunks' histories. I got a very old trunk at an auction over 30 years ago. It's been my coffee table ever since.
Yes, I am a survivor but you are a good thing helping me not succumb to depression/overwhelm in what I want to do.in this episode you corrected my first thought of polyurethane paper down. You taught me Spoonflower is doable, had read site years back and gave up. Thanks for the visit
Just have to say, I know you were nervous about transitioning from all sewing all the time to letâs repair and restore but I am so glad you let that creative genie out of that bottle. I love these new videos. I love watching your innovative techniques for breathing new life into beautiful objects that have been neglected and forgotten.
It's actually an incredibly old video, but I fully appreciate the enthusiasm and support!! <3 <3
This is like junk journaling but with fabric. I loveeee it!
Monthly survivor đ€Łđ€Ł That was awesome. I have a beautiful, antique Korean blanket chest i got for a steal at the thrift store. The paper lining definitely needs to be removed as it's very old and peeling/flakey. But overall, it's in good shape. I also want to store fabric or supplies in it đ
I love seeing the trunks. I got a trunk at a flea market that was in the middle of a field after days of rain. Mud to your knees in some places. My husband was not the most pleased about helping me getting it out and to the vehicle. I wound up scraping the paper out and then lining it with aromatic cedar and I used shelf lining inside the top. Most of my fabric now lives there.
You might find steel wool to be better for cleaning the metal flat areas. Do wear some sort of glove, I usually use those heavy cotton ones that are kind of knitted looking. lol I donât know what they are called, hubby used them during his career in a shipâs engine room where everything is HOT. Sometimes I donât wear gloves, but it really roughens the hands. I have not truly loved my results with the citrus stripper, I guess it is the exchange for a less toxic product.
I was quite happy with the way it turned out, and didnât feel the need for steel wool (but also my hands are already quite tough, so I donât mind using it bare handed most of the time)!
Those are the trunks of my dreams.
Just found you about a week ago and you are so interesting Iâm watching often trying to catch up!
Yay! Thank you!
Excellent video, throughout. Regards from Liverpool, England.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love how the trunks turned out and thought your compromises were inspired! I do have a trunk I inherited from my in-laws that Iâd like to restore. The key was lost and my first step was to watch vids to learn how to pick the lock. đ
That is awesome! đ
You are brilliant! And edit time: 3 years đ
Thanks đ
I have a trunk that I refinished as a teenager with my dad's help! He went through a (respectful and gentle) trunk refinishing phase in the late 80s. I found a trunk at a garage sale and bought it for him, he made me r4efinsihing it myself! :D We removed the hardware and wood and old canvas, put on new canvas and restored the original wood and hardware (as well as cleaned up the inside) It is such an integral part of my storage needs (blankets and sheets) that I honestly don't know what I would do without it!
Love that!!!!
I have the trunk that used to belong to my Aunt/Godmother thats she took to university.
It needs work.
Oooh, I adore trunks, it's an effort not to adopt every one I see.... I have one of those blue ones with the cardboard trays that everyone had in the 70s and it's full of fabric, I have a more modern wooden one I got as a gift, and I acquired an old one one similar to your pink one but more like the base model... Mine has plain wooden bands where yours are shaped, mine's brown painted canvas exterior where yours is tin, flat rather than rounded top, and the latch and lock are a bit different and I have the key for it, but it's the same size and I'm guessing approximate age, three wooden bands on the outside, same corner fittings, leather handles destroyed... mine also had leather straps which have long since disintegrated but I've got a pair of old stirrup leathers from my horseback riding days that I'm going to replace them with, those and the hardware and the original handles and any fittings I removed are in a bag in the bottom of the trunk, awaiting further restoration attempts. I want to get the polyesters out of it and store my wools in it, the reason it had polyesters in it is because in previous setup the blue one was sitting on top of it (the blue one has a bigger footprint but the wooden one has a much sturdier lid, so the cottons went in the blue trunk for easier access) I kinda restored that one, new leather handles (with new hardware that looks too shiny, I need to find some blueing or something, also need to oil the leather) but after I steamed the grotty paper out if it, I put cedar panelling in it. Thanks so much for the trunk resource, now I know where to look for a replacement corner fitting for it! Heh, have also used dremel bits in my regular drills. ModPodge, what a great idea for the decals. Great job on that trunk! And I'd never have thought of the Spoonflower solution for the patterened paper, awesome. Tempted to have another look at the brown trunk when I get my craft room set up. Still have to varnish and stabilize a shelf then finish the flooring in the closet and then add the shoe moulding, then I can start setting up up in that bedroom and maybe, just maybe, find the sofa that's curently buried under all the craft clutter that has had nowhere else to go till I reclaimed that bedroom! Edit: "edit time: 3 years" LOL
đđđ
Hi, Shannon! I really enjoy your videos! I wanted to stick my nose in and tell you about storing my Grandmother's beautiful natural fibers (linen, cotton) in her cedar hope chest. (It looks like cedar in the bottom of one of the trunks.) The cedar caused massive discoloration/stains and rotted the textiles! I now use sacrificial Ikea cotton sheets to separate all textiles to (so far) protect all wool, silk, linen, cotton, rayon from direct contact with wood in chests and dresser drawers. I miss those embroidered tablelcoths. I tried several methods to remove the stains to no avail...I love that you worked so hard to preserve the aesthetic of the trunk with the Spoonflower fabric. You are brilliant!
Both trunks have sacrificial fabric in the bottom of them from Day 1!
Yes!!!! I have my grandfathers old trunk (the one his father brought over from Italy when they immigrated from Sicily) that I have been wanting to clean up for years! I have been using it to store quilts inside and as a plant display on top. It is similar to the first trunk you shared-with the tray inside and leather handles that are turining into dust. than you for sharing Brettuns information-this is what I've needed. Now that I'm retired, I can spend the time to bring it back to life.
We survived 3 three years waiting for this! đ
đđđ
So fun! I just scored a free trunk for my son's new house and I learned a lot from your video about how to clean and preserve it. The dremel tool idea is genius and I love the bag lining idea! Thanks for sharing!
I have only sewed one thing to date: a toiletry bag. I quilted three layers together (outside, wadding, and lining), and forgot to hand-bast the layers together so the top layer pulled a fair bit. Ahwell, nothing a fancy trim couldn't fix.
I really love how you respect the history of the object and think about the ethics of working on objects of considerable age. I feel like far too often vintage/antique pieces get abused to fit into someone's aesthetic. Appreciating actual craftsmanship and functional objects that have stood the test of time is wonderful!
Do you still have the house
These trunks are gorgeous! I'm so glad they ended up with you, you did a wonderful job restoring and preserving them. â€
Thank you so much!
OMG Shannon! The details on the outside of the bubblegum pink trunk are awesome! đđđ Really great solution with the bag lining of the first trunk!
Thanks so much! đ
Great job
Amazing work to both preserve and make these useful. I have my mothers trousseau trunk from 1948 storing sheets in my bedroom. It almost feels like pressboard in place of solid wood, and the latches aren't super sturdy. Might look it over for possibilities!
Love
I think the cedar boards are great. I love what you did. Always wanted to redo a trunk but no where to put it.
I have two too! My oldest one is a wooden sea chest which may have come to NZ on a sailing ship ~200 years ago. It could do with more linseed and less sun đ My other truck is very like your first one. I would guess that it came to NZ in the 60s as it looks very similar to the one my parents brought over with them. (My sister has that one). Mine is blue and has a tray and is lined with plain paper. And it is stuffed to capacity with material! đ
Very cool!
Where are you?? I think I missed something Thought you were restoring an old home
Omg, this could not have been better timing! I have the opportunity to get one or two trunks like this from my grandmas estate, and now I feel so much better about restoring them!
I think you were trying to say supporter and subscriber at the same time, so it came out "survivor." Love it LOL. Thank you in turn, for your appreciation and for your wonderfully entertaining videos! You've made me so curious about vintage trunks now. I admit that I never gave them much thought before. I thought your refurbishments were brilliant, especially replicating the paper's pattern in custom fabric. I LOVE that fabric and were I you, with sewing skills and so forth, I might be tempted to order some more and make a top or dress out of it!
So far I've survived your videos just fine. đ
đđđ
They turned out great đ especially that pink one đ©·
That deserves to be the coffee table while you watch Pirates of Penzance! And I survived, thanks! đ
Putting a layer of glass in-between can increase durability. There should be free/cheap glass shears to make for a safer surface
I think your solution with the fabric printed like the paper was a great idea and I also loved how you preserved the undamaged pretty parts of the paper lining in the other one! Just great that you consulted experts and took a lot of care to restore these. Makes my historian heart happy :) The "monthly survivor" part cracked me up, but I'll take it :D
