Ryan Zimmerman was the first superstar in Washington Nationals history. He was their first ever draft pick, first home run at Nationals Park, and first of nearly everything important (including being part of their first World Championship). Watch the story of a team legend blossom while still being one of baseball's most underrated players...

I was a little surprised you didn’t mention one stat about his walk-off HRs that’s always stuck out to me. He’s 8th all time with 11. Everybody in the top 20 or so has 400 home runs or more. Except Zim, who doesn’t even have 300. 11/284 homers were walk-offs, about 4%. That’s insane.

I think it's important I share this. Ryan Zimmerman means a lot to me as a baseball fan. I'm 17 now but when I was young the Washington nationals played spring training in Brevard county for a few years. I got the privilege to throw out the first pitch at a few of those games. But thats not the memory that sticks with me the memory that sticks with me is Ryan Zimmerman being right there giving me his batting gloves and the usual rub the little kid on his head it was the small little moments I shared with Zimmerman when I was young. He did this without any cameras or News around he did this out of the kindness of his heart because to him it wasn't about fame or popularity. I've shared many small and just a minute at max memories with Zimmerman but those are what have stuck with me throughout the years and is why Zimmerman means so much to me as a baseball fan.

Ryan Zimmerman is my favorite player in MLB history. When Harrisburg came to my town Zim was playing with them on a minor league rehab assignment so I went to the game. I sat right next to the visitors dugout to get a good look as the players were on deck. At the same time prospect Luis Garcia was making his ascent to the big club via Harrisburg. As Ryan climbed out of the dugout Luis was at bat. I took out my phone and began shooting video of Zim up close warming up on deck. However, Garcia was in the background for his at bat. Ryan turned around and saw me recording. I don't know if he assumed I was a scout or something but he immediately assumed I was there to record Luis, not him. He pivots behind and took several steps to the left back towards the dugout to finish his warmup outside of my shot. That is what a humble, unassuming and non-pretentious individual Ryan Zimmerman is. I never forgot that.

I grew up as a Virginian orioles fan in the cal Ripken era. I was excited to see baseball return to dc, which never happened in my life time. I am a Homer (redskins/commanders, capitals, bullets/wizards) so I was torn between which baseball team I root for. I don’t particularly like Baltimore but it was the home team pre 2004. My first game at RFK was 2006 rookie season homerun game winner. I was a fan after that.
I was working for flippin pizza in 2012, harpers rookie season. Flippin was the official sponsor of the nationals at the time, we would get free tickets and anyone could volunteer to work shifts at the stadium. I was working at nats first playoff game which they lost to St. Louis. After that season the number of fans exploded exponentially. It was assumed Washington baseball will always be bad, like the wizards and sunders commanders. After 2012 the amount to coverage and hype was on. Zimmerman was the link between the old “dc” logo wearing nationals and this new exciting nationals.

Love this guy. What’s always surprising to me is him having a disproportionate amount of his HRs being walkoffs (3.9%), that might still be the record. The other guys with more nominal walkoff HRs all had an advantage due to hitting more total HRs anyway, Zim only had 284. And I was at one of them (7/31/2010 vs. PHI), it’s still a major memory for me. Great video

Of course everyone saw his great play in the post season, but he also hit two walkoff bombs in the regular season. Even when he was slumping he came up in the big moments. I'm a Cubs fan and we don't win the WS in 2016 without Miguel Montero's clutch RBI single. Zobrist gets all the praise (and rightly so) but Montero gave us an extra-run cushion and it ended up being the winning run. Sadly, Montero said some things about manger Joe Madden after the WS win that earned the ire of Cubs fans but he was still instrumental for the clubhouse.
It's probably too obscure but his RBI single helped break the 108 year curse. That's worth something.

He also broke the record for most perfect innings thrown in a row, along with missing a perfect game in 2013 by inches, which may have been prevented if Hunter Pence didn’t take a few steps to his right before the pitch, something he mentioned in “Games with Names” podcast.
