I lived in Yosemite for 6years! I just left on Christmas. It's year long of you want, even in seasonal roles. It's also unionized, which can be cool and also really suck at the same time. 😆 I thought I would only stay 1 summer! Also, I've done Denali a season and when I was there, people really enjoyed working at the places in the glitter gulch, including the salmon bake (but NOT the housing), and princess ( the housing is also weird). Inside the park itself is also good. It's mostly busses and support. There is also a small cafe/sandwich spot. OH and an employee only bar in a train car!!! 🤣🤣 the edr in the park is also alot better that the other sister location in DPV.
Dude me and my boyfriend are going to Yellowstone in September… the part about the internet… we’re actually relieved to not have Verizon wireless lmaoo. We are so prepared to have limited contact with the outside world
SO TRUE . My son worked in MOAB and he said it was rampant among visitors and some seasonal workers. My son said the he was happy to get his friends to work out there with him to avoid drug addict nasty roommates. He did everything from housekeeping , kitchen, maintenance and than did night auditing. He is well rounded, but as he stated it can be completely exhausting. He worked the busiest times during the summer, they did not have RA's but they did have the GM assistant stop by for inspections. He said Winter out there was a ghost town, and probably the best time to work out there. lol.
Well I know to be careful if ever have to clean a dish cleaner cause I do not want to rush when working on something like that and get my finger cut, at home with my family I cannot rush cleaning up our home daily, so when I work at a season job and near the end seasons I always know not to rush.
During the summer of 2015, the food in the EDR at Grant Village in Yellowstone was a 8 out of 10. I disagree with Carolyn on that. I do remember about a three day period during the summer when the food dropped significantly for about three days to 2 out of 10. Beats me what went wrong. I remember a younger worker commenting, "This place has sure gone to hell!" I laughed but agreed. That was the exception. Overall, a national park summer for me is an e-x-c-e-p-t-I-o-n-a-l experience.
I’ve worked with Aramark, Xanterra, etc Togwotee, Lake Powell (Bullfrog, Offshore, Halls) Temple Bar, Stehekin, Chena Hot Springs, Death Valley, Tamarack, Glacier, Olallie Lake, Desert Valley, Crater Lake, etc. There’s a lot of good and bad. But I am done with seasonal work. It’s not the same. I started in 2005 and stopped last year (2021). I’m halfway through this video, but you haven’t mentioned laundry yet. Lol. I worked at canyon in 1980.it was kinda fun,doesnt help being a quiet person,I was a dishwasher and eventually went to work in the cafeteria.food was ok,but not special.the only thing I didnt like was what was taken out of your check.they are right,you dont need a strong box to take your pay home.I met some pretty girls there,sadly never saw them again.I met one gal named bobbi there and got attached to her.we corresponded for a while and it ended after awhile.found out about 6 years later she had gotten married.first time I cried like a baby. They offered me a security guard position, and I was wondering if you had anything to say about your experiences with the security on site?
Love that you went vegetarian for this experience. How feasible did you think veganism would be at a park with the dining options? Do you tell them ahead of time? How many outside food options do you have? Like a store on site. I have no clue so thanks for any insight!
Thank you! I think being vegan is doable. If you have trouble finding options for you in the Employee Dining Room, there are General Stores at each location in the park where you could purchase other groceries!
Excellent...they should hire you and Tim to be PR people! Tim has excellent videos...I'm older and feel I would make an excellent RA as an ex school teacher with classroom management and conflict resolution skills...you CAN live together well...leadership is needed! Many RA's remind me of young teachers--either too intense or too laid back...trying to find the balance. It is control issues or fear of losing control of the staff. There are great techniques to overcome this but it takes years of experience...
I have done seasonal jobs for 4 years now (cook). Worst experience was racism , bullied and drama. Work can be very hard, long hours and OT. Housing can be expensive. Free housing can mean the company will own you and your privacy can be invaded. Can be modern slavery. The Company probably use you. You will have to quit your rights at some places. Some places work is done by the color of skin. Example: black and brown will work very hard then those European with VISA permission and white will have easy jobs and then they will do less effort they can do. Some of them can steal your tips. Beware of Mobbing .
Did a summer in Yellowstone. The EDR were Nazis people were fired taking food out of the crapteria. The Asian staff were great but they would slam doors when the would hangout from dorm room to dorm room visiting their friends, and they did not drink it seasonal you need to drink. The internet sucked if wanted watch a video open before go to work it might be ready when you got home.
Avoid Sun Valley Resort in Idaho. Dorms are four to a room with no closets and NO, it is not free. $320 per month per bunk=$1,280 per month for a 10x12 room for the Company. If you are hired as a full timer or a j-1, you are golden, you can literally do no wrong. American seasonal workers are treated like disposable trash and Yes, you can be fired for Any reason or for NO reason at all.

I'm set to go from may 5th to Oct 17th this year. I will be staying at canyon village like you did and working for the gift shop there. You said your drove there. I too plan on driving. My main concerns are; 1.) Are the roads safe to travel in October? I know weather is unpredictable but just curios you're opinion being a fellow road warrior. 2.) Did you get any feedback from your peers there if working in the gift shop is a chill place to work? 3.) How is the social gatherings and romance in the park? Are there a good amount of attractive people there... mainly women since I'm a guy? lol I know women have a good eye for beauty ahaha I Hope that question doesn't make me sound shallow as I known beauty is from with in but physical beauty doesn't hurt. I'm just curios about what the social environment will consist of and if I'll be so lucky to find a fling in the park or lover or what ever you wanna call it. Hey! So 1) the roads are safe in October! It usually starts snowing heavily up there in November, so you should be good to go on that one! 2) I heard the gift shop is one of the best, and easiest, places to work. The hours are good and it doesn't open super early or close very late. 3) Romance in the park is a BLAST. There are lots of attractive women, in my opinion, that come to work there. It's super easy to date in the park and I have some friends that are still in long lasting relationships with people they met there! I also had a few flings while I was there and it's a really fun environment to "date" in. I'm so stoked you're going to work in Canyon village and I'll probably catch you around this summer! I usually go to Yellowstone 2-3 times a month!

Unsure why, but no place have I been where friendship has spawned so quickly. Everyone is there to have fun and with far less drama than the real world. This goes both for friendship and romance. You don't have to worry about meeting people. The majority of employees coming in are young, either in school or just out and eager to make fast friends. It is the perfect environment. And do be sure to bring your car as you will want to be mobile for activities and not everyone has one... You don't want to depend on others. If you can fit a bike, do that as well. Not so much of an issue in Canyon, but Old Faithful can be nice. P.S. If you can, try to get reassigned to Old Faithful (Lodge or Inn) as there are more employees there and quite a bit more to do than Canyon in terms of both employee activities and broad range of outdoor activities as well. You will have a car sure, but it's also nice to have things to do in your back yard. Walking the Upper Geyser Basin after work, or especially in the middle of the night can be very rewarding w Watching old faithful when nobody is around as lit by the moonlight is pretty awesome as well. I worked there and to your questions, it is something I cherish many years later... You won't forget it... BTW, with a car comes more toys. If you fish, bring your gear, same for hiking, even audio, clothing, coolers, tent, sleeping bag (even two;), etc. You have quite a bit of space in the car, so having a bit of extra gear makes outdoor or any activity much easier. Again, many come here by plane, so they don't always have a lot. I lived in Jackson, so just threw everything in the back of my truck and it was awesome. Something i did not realize at the time, but quickly learned as soon as I arrived.
Hey! It shouldn't matter. They'll bus you to your location when you arrive and bus you to the airport or bus station when you leave! While you're working, you can always hitch hike or catch a ride with one of your coworkers!

Are people in seasonal work generally respectful? I’ve been bullied a lot in the past and I’m starting my first National Park job in May. I want to be able to make friends but I’ve been seen as an outcast in the past and never really had any real friendships.
From my experience, most people tend to be SO welcoming that work seasonal work. Everyone comes from all different backgrounds and really embraces each other. I can't imagine you having any issues at all with anyone bullying you. I think you will make friends, for sure!
I'm with Carolyn on this. There is little judgement and just no room for drama. People perform seasonal work more for the experience in an amazing outdoor environment. Friendships are fast and true. People do form their own groups just by human nature, but it just seems everyone is here to have fun and don't really get into that other junk. In fact, I can't think of anyone ever having any negative experiences with people. Well, there was the time a few people moved my bed and all possessions out of my room as a prank. I deserved it as I am not above a joke or two, but I still talk to those guys today, many years later. Go, and give it every opportunity. I promise you will love it...
It's hard for me to understand this statement. You are in Yellowstone where you have the largest geothermal activity in the world. Geysers, hot springs, mountains, trails, rivers, lakes, wildlife and so much more. Why are you concerned about having a connection to the outside world for just a short stint of time in your life? That said, I can't knock Alaska to which has it's own grandeur, especially if you have already worked in Yellowstone. I just can't wrap my head around the internet being the difference. The reason one goes to these places are the outdoors. Bring your phone, but use it for pictures and videos, not Twitter... Yes I worked in Yellowstone, and it is a piece of my life I will always cherish.

Yeah I'm working this season of 2022 via Mammoth EDR. Even though I am very excited, 👏 at the same time I feel like I'm "going in blind" too! 🤪
i worked at Old Faithful EDR i went out of my way to cook items for vegetarians and vegans try esting there Glenn is Great
when I worked there the food was average.my favorite was pudding mixed with graham crackers,christ its no wonder I still love pudding

The internet issue is the only reason I turned down Xanterra and Yellowstone this year and am going to McCarthy Lodge in Wrangell-St Elias instead
