    I was beginning to feel lost with my current career path, and I was looking for something different where I could use my bilingual skills more specifically. After doing some research on my own and watching a few of your videos in just the past few minutes, I feel certain that interpreting is what I want to do moving forward.
    If you would have any video or any information concerning how you can become an independent interpreter, or via an agency, I would greatly appreciate. Or do interpreters work as independent contractors? I’m new to this world and know very little about it, but I would like to know more.
    Muchas gracias por todo y por tu dedicación.

      Hola Juan! Muchas gracias por el apoyo y tus lindos comentarios. Para tomar el examen oral de NBCMI no te permiten usar la computadora para tomar apuntes. Debes hacerlo a mano usando lápiz (o lapicero) y papel. Se toma desde un sitio web especial pero ellos usan el servicio de Proctor U que es la compañía que supervisa a los candidatos que toman el examen y tienes que concederles acceso a tu computadora para ellos poder asegurarse de que no tengas abierto ningún programa o aplicación (o al menos es lo que tengo entendido). Espero la respuesta te sea útil y mucha suerte en el examen!

    Hi Rosa, I am studying to become certified with NBCMI Spanish and I found your video to be very helpful. I passed the written exam about a year ago, but I have been struggling passing the oral exam. I too made the mistake of moving forward with the arrow and this only made me more nervous. Currently I signed up to take the Alta language Interpretation 40-hour course. However, I dont get a trained professional to really go over what I need to work on. Its something I need to track myself. Also its all in english even the patient speaking and its a book, their are no audios. I am struggling really engaging in this course. I was wondering if you know of a class that i can feel I am benefiting and actually improving. Thank you and looking forward from hearing from you.

    • @Interprepedia
      @Interprepedia  Před rokem

      Hi! I totally feel your pain and I too think it’s a common deficiency in many of the existing courses. I can’t think of any that checks all the boxes when it comes to the practice component. I’m even working on creating my own set of practices and combining them in a course format like what I would’ve liked to have when I was preparing for the exam… but it’s something I’m working on right now and since I’m also a full-time interpreter I don’t know exactly when it will be ready but my goal is to finish it as soon as possible. In the meantime, have you checked out The Interpreter’s Rx by Holy Mikelson? It’s a set of practices for medical interpreters although like your current course, it does not offer you guided practices or feedback :(

    • @angelicarodriguez8350
      @angelicarodriguez8350 Před rokem

      Hi Rosa, this is so great to hear that you are creating a course for this. I did buy the book and it’s what I used to practice for the oral exam. I needed more examples. The material I had to study with was not enough to give me the broader rage of medical terms. But I continued with the Alta interpretation and the classes with the interpreters are getting better. They have begun to give me feedback and helping me with note taking skills. I found other classmates to begin to study with and it’s great to bounce off each other and we encourage each other. It definitely teaches me to keep doing something before speaking. I was really bomb out that it was a book and only in English, it has forced to study with other students and the instructors. Otherwise I would not reach out to anyone and just studied on my own. Found that engaging and studying with other students to be very helpful. It’s funner too! Lol

      Hi Cynthia! prior to taking NBCMI's written or oral tests, they require you to complete at least 40 hrs of medical interpreter training. This training should include at least the basic things you need to know to pass the tests.
      If you haven't already, please check out a video I made with tips on how to choose the right training for you: czcams.com/video/6rQIyw4O4aA/video.html
      I highly recommend considering a note-taking course or at least getting Interpretrain's Note-Taking Manual to work on your note-taking skills if you'll take NBCMI's test because some utterances are a bit long.
      Best of luck!

    • @Interprepedia
      @Interprepedia  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Jamie! Yes, if you take the NBCMI test from home you must have your webcam enabled and they'll be monitoring you during the test. They even made me pan the camera around my office and I had to show them all four walls and I think even under my desk. I've heard from other colleagues that some have required to have mirrors behind them, but since these things change, your best bet will always be to check with NBCMI what to expect in your case.

I find that the TOEFL is the most widely accepted test (in case you need to use it for something else in the future).
