IMPORTANT: Do not remove the battery connector if you can avoid it. You can carefully pry up the battery and place it aside while it is still connected. During removal or replacement of the battery connector, if you inadvertently touch a very small, grey “fuse” right beside the connector with anything metallic, it can short out, resulting in the JoyCon’s battery becoming disconnected from the mainboard and no longer able to power it. The JoyCon will still work when docked but ONLY when docked.

My guess is that a plastic piece wears down that allows the joystick to have more play in it, the cardboard just adds extra pressure to compensate for the worn plastic. So when the plastic wears down more, you'll need another piece of cardboard to compensate more. Also, doing this to a new joycon likely would quicken the wear on the plastic causing drift sooner.

It's because the conductive pads get scraped away after use. Cleaning them out with contact cleaner (after opening up the stick modules themselves) works wonders. All this does is creating a more "aggressive connection", pushing the metal tabs closer to the conductive pads, thus improving the connection regardless of uneven conductive surface or debris.

  • @icanhazgoodgame3845

It does not void your warranty. thats a convenient and common misconception.
The manufacturer would have to show how you the work you did damaged the device and therefore not responsible for your at fault damages. Opening and servicing a device is not on its own a warranty voiding action.
However products are often cheaper than lawyers so they get away with it.
