Trash or Treasure? Old Yamaha 9.9 4 Stroke Outboard Motor

- This old Yamaha outboard motor had mice living in it and hasn't run in years. In this video I take an initial look at what might be involved with getting this 1989 Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke outboard engine running again after sitting for at least 10 years.
This Yamaha FT9.9EXF outboard uses a remote control box or binnacle to operate the outboard engine as opposed to operating it with a tiller handle but this Yamaha 9.9 did not come with the control box so I am uncertain which type I should use.

18:28 Conclusion
9.9 hp outboard engines are quite popular and common in the US because we no longer have 10 hp engines as an option but they are the same as 10 hp outboards (I have a video on this subject!). Small boats, dinghies and tenders are usually equipped with light weight and low horsepower outboards and despite weighing nearly 100 lbs, 9.9 horsepower outboards like this Yamaha are usually well suited for smaller craft and also as a kicker motor on larger boats.

Do you think this engine has potential?
Oh yeah probably great little engine👍
I have a 1995 9.9 Yamaha for a kicker. Great little engine. I have made a few videos on it also on my channel. These little things will run forever but I have found that some parts are becoming obsolete, such as the regulator/rectifier. Maintenance items like the impeller and spark plugs are easy to obtain. I would recommend just getting the 703 controller. That way you know it will work. I’m sure there are few used ones for sale from a boat yard or market place, etc.
Oh Yeah, had a similar Evinrude, spark was weak and carbs were a bit dirty, especially the vent plate behind the carb, didn't take much and she was purring like a kitten, I polished it up, sold it and bought a 4 stroke 5 hp Briggs and Stratton outboard, still have it and it's very reliable. Pushes my 12 foot Pro 120 Very good.
An an anchor, yes...(jk)

Hey Wayne those are good motors for sure my grandad had one on an old skiff he built, there should be a fuse that could be the problem with your spark or it could be your power pack which im pretty sure are obsolete now. Also when changing the impeller on this outboard make sure its in reverse when you disconnect the lower there should be im pretty sure an 8mm or 10mm nut that connects the shift shaft between the motor and the lower. Good luck with your endeavors i cant wait to see the next video!
If you can get it started and running , it’s Treasure !!! 😃
I really enjoy these types of videos!
Rumour has it, that these 9.9 yamas are indestructible
14:38 when I got my 6ph tahotsu I didn't have a fuel tank either, but, there is a truck, if yea got fuel line, a primer, and a set of fittings fer your outboard, you can Jerry rig up something fer a regular gas can, well that's what I did, I wasn't looking to spend 200 on a second hand tank and hose, i put a filter on the hose in the gas can end if the hose. Like a chainsaw would have, and worked perfectly
Don't be shy about calling Yamaha directly to ask about the engine. I bought a boat that had an '06 Yamaha 50 hp 2 stroke, and I have to say, they have been terrific in answering my questions on the phone.
I'm super new to boats and you have me hooked on this channel glad to see some more
Welcome aboard!
Yamaha Malta has the same button, & that's a kill button, not for starting it.
Nice motor it can be rebuilt YT should have all the videos on basically what to do and even if not it would be good to go through
i'm an outboard mechanic and i've worked on many of these cause they're popular in the netherlands. i'll try to give you some of the most important information i know about these before you tear into it more. those wires on top of the carburator are probably for the electric choke and that can be the reason why it won't start. if you're going to clean that carburator BE VERY CAREFUL cause parts for those carburators aren't available anymore last time i checked, except for gaskets and such. Also it looks like you have a "High Thrust" model which means that it's made to push big and heavy boats but it won't be fast. overall these are great and reliable engines! wish you the best!
Thanks!
Definitely has potential!
Hey, Wayne, great video! As a new creator I came here from your advice thread on Reddit and subscribed on my main channel as your content is right up my alley!
I'm not familiar with this particular Yamaha, but I get a lot of corrosion on outboards where I'm at and have had good luck with no-spark conditions by cleaning the grounds for the CDI, remote control, and the starter (while you're in there). Yamahas also have a yellow wire that you can unplug at the junction box to set the engine at base timing. It's a hail Mary, but might work to rule out electronic timing advance issues. Unplug the lanyard switch to rule out its failing closed (unlikely, but you never know).
I have to commend your audio as well. Is that all captured with a lav mic? I struggle with getting the mix consistent with a lav or overhead mic when my head turns. And is your camera set in a follow-me mode on a gimbal or similar? That's a pretty cool subtle dynamic effect.
Thanks! I am primarily using a DJI Osmo Pocket 3 which I usually set to follow me. I got it with a wireless lav mic that works pretty well and if the mic is under my chin instead of mid-chest, I get better results when I move my head.
Man. nice you should store you motor upright !
Yeah this one had been kicking around a few people's garages and sheds for YEARS!
Great little motors. With a few carburator parts you can boost it up to 15 hp providing it is in good shape otherwise. Some of them had no oil filter and you needed frequent oil changes The shaft is too long for your little boat but would be great for the big boat as a kicker! CHEERS from HERE! PS wish I was your neighbour so I could buy it from you!
Your videos give me hope. First time boat owner, wanting to learn how everything works and how to fix/replace. Thanks Wayne 😎🫡
Glad to help
I feel like you may have destroyed a home cleaning that out🤣…..well, aside from the home wrecking this reminded me of some of the projects my dad(who was a mechanic) tried to use as “teaching opportunities “ for me when I was younger…good stuff 👍🏻..thanks for sharing
Yeah - but since it's spring, they hopefully can build a new one somewhere 'better'!
I like that 4 wheel cart
It comes in handy!
Great video WtBG, Maybe the white and black wire needs connected like a on switch at the controller.
yeah - I just need to determine if it's a start or stop
I liked the video👍👍
Check out T Mike's vintage outboard motors
You might be able to find a service manual on line somewhere. Go to a dealer and ask a few questions. They would LOVE to sell you parts.
Wayne, get a clip on spark tester to check for spark. Or just ground the plug and watch the gap for spark.
I have the clip on one - I’ll be testing for spark!
I wonder if there is a safety lanyard kill switch thing somewhere like maybe on the control box?
That might be what those wires are for! If so, I probably need to complete that circuit to test for spark
Good point! That might be it!
Might be speaking for myself but I would have definitely started with a shop vac
The hay gets jammed in the hose.
I use a shop vac to get ride of mouse nests . Than you don't have to touch it 👍😊
There was a lot of hay/straw which would have plugged it up - been there done that!
No spark is probably because you didn't have the ignition system activated with power. I'm not referring to the starter. The 2 wires with the cabling are probably the on/off for the ignition, so need to determine where they connect on the engine and place a jumper wire across those connection locations.
Yeah I need to sort out if they're for starting or a kill switch.
I like fixing those old outboards. The only thing is I replace more money in parts than they’re worth unless it’s yours and you’re gonna use it. I’ve got a 71 Evinrude fisherman 6hp that I rebuilt. All the cooling passages were full of sand. Had another 6hp I rebuilt and gave to an old fella that needed one. I think I have about 180.00 dollars in this one, and not counting my time. I’ll be lucky to get 100.00 for it that’s the problem. If you completely paint and new decals etc. I guess they’re worth more to someone?
It seems that even pristine examples of old outboards aren’t worth much.
Be carefull which side you lay the motor on as oil can run out if layed down wrong.I changed the oil on my boatmotors with a pump down the dipstick tube. There is an oil drain but it is messy.
Try to make use of that remote as that is $750.00 in Canada ! If you can find one with a tiller handle you can convert it to tiller control.Learning to repair--maintain your stuff is part of the fun-challenge!Points were phased out before 1989.
There currently is no remote - and I would prefer to not buy the expensive 703 if I don't need that one.
@@WayneTheBoatGuy perhaps the used market??
@@WayneTheBoatGuywhat was the remote in the video? That didn’t come with it?
@@DaSween this engine only came with the cables and the black and white wires (which were cut)
i've had mice make a nest in my Harley fairing for the past two years. last year, it chewed through my gps wires.....they used blue shop towels for a lot of it. youre going to have to get a bigger boat since you got a bigger engine.......lol.
There happens to be a reason I’m doing this!
@@WayneTheBoatGuy cant wait.....
Where did your UK number plate (license plate) come from? its a long way (and time ! an X suffix means the vehicle was a 1982 model)
It was from our car when we lived there in the early 80s.
Wayne, I would check compression first then spark. I would pull the carburetor off It probably needs to be rebuilt. Then the impeller and then get the gas tank and gas hose and replace all the hose lines in the engine.
I like your thinking! Maybe I’ll buy that Yammy adapter for my compression tester
Hi Wayne how are u
I lake your videos.
U make me smart everyday more and more.
Now I have this question for you my frend.
Is it realy hard to get an
YAMAHA 4AC 4HP
I NEET AN INERFUELTANK.
Is it easy or hart to get one to bye..
YOU STILL HAVE THE BONTEN WALER THAD YOU BYE FOR $500 ????
WILL BE LOOKING FOR AN ANSWER.THANK
To get rid of the mouse smell you should febreeze it
Peppermint oil! A friend suggested dryer sheets. The mice made their nest with dryer sheets.
Maybe start with a rectifier
Do they tend to go bad?
If you call or text T Mike's vintage outboard he can help you out. If you don't have his number yet. Just watch one of the videos and at the end you will able to see the number. Good luck
Switch it to a tiller
Hmmm - I wonder what the cost difference (and availability) would be!
The first thing to do with an old engine that has been sitting like that one is pull the spark plug(s) and give each cylinder a 1-second blast of an aerosol lube like PB Blaster, etc. No WD40! Also, if you'd like to borrow an ultrasonic cleaner to get that carb scrubbed out, let me know.
Why not WD40?
Four stroke on its side is no good, unless you drain it.
I think this one had been stored in every position!
@@WayneTheBoatGuy there should be a side that you can lay it on without the oil going anywhere, it's usually when the carburator is facing upwards when it's laying on it's side
