      Personally, I come from playing trumpet after a calling back to my first love. The Horn. So, even the next octave up is not an issue. What I can tell you is to relax, don't use excessive pressure (such as the octave key; the pinky holder) and most importantly keep the air fast and constant. Work up slowwwww! If you push it too fast you may encounter bad habits and otherworldly embouchure adaptations which can take much time to repair. Do one note a week. Get comfortable. After a while you will feel comfortable within 3 octaves.
      I'm working achieving that sound and am now studying under a retired pro player. That's another thing I cant encourage enough either. A good teacher.
      May the horn be with you,,,, always. (Star Wars reference)

    • @izzjaboi4337
      @izzjaboi4337 Před 7 lety +3

      CokeFan On a single horn high F is play with first valve, a double French horn has the components of a single horn and more. For that reason, first valve is an option for high F

      Horn is a very difficult instrument, like any other brass instrument. The Notes are VERY close together, thus having a range close to the Trombone/Tuba.

    everything is pitched down a fifth. The c scale is actually an f scale and it bothers me

    • @katiefornuto237
      @katiefornuto237 Před 7 lety +2

      DanielR1 because french horn is pitched in F, a fifth down to when we talk scales for french horn it will always be in F never concert pitch. So a C scale would refer to a concert F scale if that makes sense

    • @AirEnderman13
      @AirEnderman13 Před 7 lety

      Then why on God's green earth do these horn players call it a C-scale if they're playing an F scale? If a horn is tuned in Bb, are you really just playing the Bb scale when they say you're playing the F scale? As someone trying to improve his knowledge of theory and trying to improve my playing on the horn, this is extremely confusing.
      I play the horn for my church, and what bothers me is that, knowing this, I have to ask this question? If we're playing a song in the key of C, will the notes I play actually only be the notes in the F scale? That's way too freaking stupid. You can be tuned in F all you want, but it doesn't make sense to be playing in a different key altogether than the song being performed.

    • @deborahhuang4529
      @deborahhuang4529 Před 7 lety +1

      AirEnderman, it's because players will follow the 'rule' for scales. If horns are to play a C scale, it will mean a scale no sharps or flats(even though it is technically concert F). If horns are to play a F scale, it will mean a scale with Bb for them (even though it is technically concert C)
