  • The French Horn is arguably the most heroic sounding of the brass family, but getting that sound out of the horn can be a bit of a challenge for newcomers. Have no fear, because Sgt. 1st Class Selena Maytum is here to show us all how to rip and roar on the French Horn in no time at all!

      Pretty much, playing Brass is making fart noises in your instrument's mouthpiece. The sound goes through the french horn, and gets amplified out of the bell. Believe it or not, it's hard to play French horn.

      But it's fun as hell.

    Hornist for almost 40 years. Use a higher viscosity bearing oil (usually comes with a needle for application) on the top and bottom bearings of each valve (underneath each valve cap and where the stop arm slides over the other end of the shaft), and a lower viscosity rotor oil inside the valve where the face of the rotor touches the housing (drip a few drops of rotor oil straight down each valve slide onto the face of each rotor). Rotor oil can be used for all of it, but most horn manufacturers and shops recommend using both.

      @@bz_510 so I auditioned on the french horn for marching season for 22 and I'm in Symphonic 2 again for the 3rd year in a row. We have 4 bands; Wind Ensemble, Symphonic 1, Symphonic 2, Concert. I'm not surprised and at the same time I am considering I just started playing french horn back in January. But I'm excited for this season and hoping to grow over the summer and get moved up to a different band, if not that's ok.

    _I’m half way 🎷through this video and wondering why is it so 🎺interesting to me? I don’t play🎶 an instrument, or at least not for 45 yrs when I played Flute in my High School Band. But it was an interesting video, or maybe I’ve always had 📯an interest in the “calming” sound🎶 of the French Horn_

    You could also play Jazz on a French Horn & in fact they have Essential Elements for Jazz Ensemble Books 1 & 2 (the F Horn Part) which include Audio Accompaniment Tracks.

    Great video! Thank you! What brand and model is that which you used in the video? Do all the horn musicians in the Army Band play the same brand of horn in the same way that he entire horn section of the Berlin Philharmonie all play Alexander horns?

    • @ArmyFieldBand
      @ArmyFieldBand  Před 3 lety +2

      The horn players of The U.S. Army Field Band play a variety of horn makes and models - it's up to the Soldier to pick the one that best suits their needs. Sgt. 1st Class Maytum is playing a Patterson triple horn from Patterson Hornworks. Some of the other horns shown in the video are a Yamaha 668, Yamaha 667, Holton Farkas model, and Conn 8D. Other members of the section play on Patterson, Kuhn, Hoyer, and a few other brands.

    shes using a double horn but most beginners start on a single horn, so why is she using a single horn?

    • @minefit6297
      @minefit6297 Před 3 lety +1

      because you don't need to press the thumb key? I started on double and was just told the thumb key makes it a different key so don't use it, as I had music written in F.
