How to build a BIRD HOUSE | DIY

It is summer and came across many free birds flying around the house, so started putting some grains and water. But not satisfied with this and wanted to do more. So, planned to build a bird house and here it is...
Used some old plywood blocks for this project and it is successfully occupied by cute little bird couple with in two days. Amazingly after few weeks two baby birds hatched :)

What I was hoping for was for you to make a false board back door to remove with nail pins so the nest can be cleaned out each season and then spray it down with WD40 to kill all lice from the prior season if needed. I once knew an old man on 80 acre farm where he had over 800 bird houses raised up on high wires and mounted to poles across his fields. The birds killed the mosquitoes and also fertilized his soils around his blue berries. He also made huge bat houses and they were fun to watch as they flew out at night from his barn. He called his farm Bird Paradise in Oregon. The man and his wife used to teach school students all about birds and their habitat. They have now passed away. I wonder what happened to their farm??

It looks smart, but for the sparrows babies it's not safe. entering gate size is vulnerable. you can use 3 inches of pipe ahead so that it will work safe guard against the predators

I'm glad you are building one like this 😊. No I haven't put anything inside or outside to attract them. Usually I put rice or some grains on the gate wall everyday so more birds fly around daily near my place. I have two more bird houses and they have started using after 2 or 3 days

They will see for secured place. I usually put rice on main gate pillar, many birds visit everyday. May be some of them will find it

it is better to make the entrace higher and with a diameter just enough to fit the birds you expect, to avoid predation from other species.

Thanks for sharing ur idea. Yes the entrance became little bigger. But they have covered half of it with grass, though it's not safe. If I make a new one sure will note this point.

That was exactly my reaction too. Entrance holes are twice as big as they need to be and also placed too low. Furthermore, adding a perch will make it easy for any predator to easily access the inside. The birds don't need them.

You can use simple hand saw tool and hammer with MDF board so that the nail goes easily with less effort

The birds in this video are introduced and invasive English House sparrows . Thats like having rats or mice in your home . In some US sates they have a bounty on them . They kill good birds to take over more nesting boxes. Some good birds that they kill are swallows . Swallows help control mosquitoes . which helps all of us with health related issues from mosquitoes . So these invasive birds cost us all money in health care dollars. Swallows are protected under the migratory bird act , so you are killing swallows indirectly with your house sparrows . Please do not allow these invasive birds to nest in any nest box or on your property . You can keep the House sparrows out of your nest box with a 1 and 1/8 round hole. good birds around your home can fit into the 1 and 1/8 round hole . . Or a 7/8 Oval shape hole will also keep House sparrows out . Violet green swallows can fit into the 7/8 oval .
