Excellent video. Been flying my RV in since 2011. Also been volunteering at flight line ops since 2009. Talked to the chief controller this year and he said that they lost a bunch of the olds hands since Covid with many of the long time controllers retiring. That is why this past year there was at times 1 mile spacing and on Thursday afternoon the controllers did not follow the notam when things got way too crowded. Instead of using holds at the various lakes they just turned everyone out to endeavor bridge. Made a call to a buddy who briefs with the controllers daily and got it fixed for after the airshow. Expect next year better use of the dots. This past year the controllers default was (on rwy 27) to tell you to aim for the orange dot land on the green dot. They will be working on aircraft ID (my RV-8A with invasion strips was called a Cirrus), and working us in tighter next year.
Quick background: I'm retired military pilot, ATP fixed and rotary wing, 4 type ratings, CFII fixed and rotary, ATC Specialist (Marines), D6779 Expert Parachutist, built my RV-8A (REA).

Every one of those points is a gem. The one that I stress the most (from my radio dj days) is SPEAK CLEARLY!!! What to say, is taught plenty in training but HOW to say it, is ignored...which is a real shame.
Being a pilot, I know that pilots just love to sound pilotey, spitting out those calls like a rhyme master. Turns out, tho...that most pilots don't have a clue what they sound like on the other end of the radio. Don't rush. Be clear and concise. Use only the words you need to and speak them clearly. After all, the only reason to talk, is to be understood.
The best aircraft radios produce terrible audio so it's up to you to make your sounds...sound like words. I suggest recording yourself at home and let someone else listen to them...maybe even a non pilot. If they can understand what you say, you're golden. I hear quite a few youtube pilots who do a great job narrating, go all cliche pilot when talking on the radio.
Steve...you're not one of those. I'm guessing that the air force had precious little patience for mumbling on the radios...and it seems you got learned good. This vid should be mandatory Oshkosh viewing.

Pilotedge has a simulated Oshkosh event going on the next few days! Today the 13th was the first day. The real life Oshkosh ATC are on the Sim working the radios.
It’s perfect if you have a flight sim, jump on and practice your arrivals with other pilots and live ATC from the comfort and safety of your computer chair.
I missed most of today but I’ll be on the next few days to make multiple arrivals and departures :)

Been there/done that, three times, nowadays I make a point of flying to the most remote off airport sites (NOT one found on any CZcams vid, my own personal ones, secret) during that weekend, where the other traffic ain't there! Then, in the following days, I'll get caught up on what I missed via the internet. The best departure was with a friend's C-320, it was socked in, a low ceiling anyway, he filed IFR, and we blasted off, pretty damn amazing for this strictly VFR pilot! He set the Otto pilot up, and went to sleep, leaving me at the controls, just as we crossed the Wyoming border (he was based in Jackson Hole), it got a little bumpy, and he woke up and said, "feels like we're back in Wyoming!"

I`ve flown into OSH airventure a dozen times. ATC rarely cleared me to land while on short final (didn`t see me?) I would fly in and land with discretion. When coversing with a pink shirt about this he said "well you`re alive aren`t you?" That`s a bad attitude.

All good stuff. Of course IMHO flying into Oshkosh is a lot safer than flying around a busy airspace with a bunch of other VFR traffic that may/may not be on flight following... they could be going any which way... At least with Osh everyone is at least going the same general direction.
