Going "open world" when you don't have a big budget already seems a bad idea, and making it traversable by flying over it, which means not exploring it, ensured that it would be empty and boring.
Aw man, this game looks like it has some really cool ideas. Really wish it was a better package overall.
Needed at least another 6-12 months of development it looks like. It's either a lack of resources, or just poor management. Maybe both.
Rougelite open world sounds like a train wreck right off the bat. Either your open world is expansive and runs take forever or your open world is underpopulated and adds a commute/blind scavenger hunt to the runs.
Glad I wasn't alone in thinking this was a bit of a letdown. I'd been following it for a long time based on the concepts it was going to employ, but after playing the beta I just found it bleak and lifeless.
Also, if it hasn't changed from the beta, parries/dodges are instant and use up a ton of stamina, making it easy to spam them, cancel an attack and run out of stamina very quickly. Obviously you could avoid this by being slow and deliberate, but the enemies rarely let you breathe shy of running out of their camp, which would shift gear from 6th to 1st.
Maybe someone else will take this idea and do it better.
Roguelite with card mechanics? The originality is overwhelming.
any leveling souls-like deck-builder you know of? usually stuff is either leveling or deckbuilding and should they have both, one often ends up exploitable/boring (*Across the Obelisk* made both rewarding)
it’s a 3d open world roguelike and you say it’s unoriginal cuz of that? name another one, dwarf fortress is literally the only open world roguelike i can think of and they’re not even close to the same game😂
holy shit. I was really looking forward to this. It looks so nice. This review is an eye opener.
Single player and persistent online connection required 😡 yeah, fix that and I might look again.
2nd review that says this is boring. That’s a shame but their other game, Generation Zero, which I own, also seemed to take quite a while to improve and make more fun and polished. Maybe I’ll take another look at this game in 3 months.
Did this show up in your Indie Showcase? Or maybe you previewed this before? It feels oddly familiar.
Thank you for the review!
Frost played it on Wishlist about a month ago.
I was super excited for this release, a shame it isn't quite up to my expectations. Maybe updates will improve things!
They have, and continue to.
might want to try this
If this was a mobile game I’d eat it up. Seems like the perfect diversion during my daily commute on the train. However, the repetitiveness you mentioned turns from a “pro” to a “con” on PC
Madrone? Is that you?!
Roguelikes probably require less budget, manpower and development time, but the genre seems really saturated by now.
I'm with you. It seems like every second indie developer is churning out a new roguelite these days. Sure, they're good for a quick thrill, but when it comes down to it, I always end up crawling back to Dead Cells like a repentant ex-lover.
Can I ask question? I've heard the term "Roguelike" for some time now. But I've never really put together what the original "Rogue" that have the Roguelike it's name. Could someone tell me where the term originated from? I'm just curious, is all.
@@SmeiskAudio The term "roguelike" comes from the 1980 game "Rogue," which was a dungeon-crawling game with procedurally generated levels, permadeath, and turn-based gameplay. The term "roguelite" refers to a subgenre of video games that draw inspiration from roguelike games, but typically have gameplay mechanics that are less punishing and more forgiving. These games often feature procedurally generated levels, permadeath, and randomized elements, but may also include persistent upgrades, checkpoints, and other mechanics that allow players to progress further with each attempt.
I just want another straightforward, single player, simple card game like Slay the Spire. Closest I’ve found is Monster Train which isn’t bad but I didn’t really like it that much.
Actually a common misconception. Depending on the scope and scale you are going for, a roguelike is one of the hardest games to balance and make people continue to play beyond either hitting their threshold for defeat or beating it. Especially so when youre touting player agency, because now youre exponentially expanding your variables by which your builds will live or die by, and build variety is very much a key to longevity. And if your game isnt going to focus on narrative, your world design needs to have double the detail and still needs to be thematically logical. Its a different flex, story wise, because rather than dictating it youre building it for discovery. There may be a bunch of roguelites, but only a handful got big and they all just happened to be in general vicinity to each other. Each developer played to their individual strengths, focused their art direction, and honed their unique systems. And theyve all been wildly different from each other, only sharing a reset on death mechanic that still varies from game to game.
I decided to just cheat and see if it was fun with a better economy. If you were actually able to have the mana to cast the good cards you get, and get enough coins to gamble for extra cards, the game becomes fun. Still kinda shallow, but some of the synergies are very strong. They just need to tweak the economy to be more player friendly and the game becomes a lot more enjoyable. The game is hard enough (ie all the enemies are sponges) that a more favorable economy doesn't even make it that much easier.
You also need to create an Account on their website in order to play. A steam account does not suffice.
That is why i could not get past the menu and just uninstalled the game.
One positive thing I can say is that the developers of this game do take community feedback seriously and will likely address all of these issues at some point.
Well so far, they don't seem to be fixing the problems this game has at all. Combat still feels really janky and enemies still scale horribly in difficulty. Clearing Hatred rifts still doesn't clear enough hatred chests, and the overall hatred scaling is still a mess.
@@snazzyjovialwyrm3314 The game is barely over 2 months old and we're talking about a smaller studio. Even AAA studios take more than 2 months to fix bugs. See what state it's in at the 6 month point and again at 1 year. The only issue I have is I feel like this game should be in Early Access.
Funily enough... this pretty negative review actually makes me want to try it. If these elements could be better refined this sounds like a game id love
ur conditioned well for supporting dead projects then
I'd never heard of this game and I'm disappointed. It looks like a world I would enjoy exploring just from this little bit, so it's too bad there isn't anything there to find...
Was looking forward to this game till I found out the devs are known for abandoning unfinished games so I kinda lost all interest
I'm glad this exists. It has all the pieces of a great POC.
You guy save me so much wasted time, and make it so easy for me choose which games to hard pass on.
Open world rogue like sounds like a really bad idea
kinda sad to hear. they should've done it as early access to start
Gonna skip but maybe Ravenbound 2 will be a fully rounded out game someday
Knowing the devs there won't be a second game or even enough improvements to the first
"Ah this game looks cool. Ah. It's a roguelite. Forget what I said".
So. Many. Roguelites. :(
1-10hours max for this
lots of unity asset effects. nah
it already lost me at rogue-li..
so dauntless better
Please play Ravenswatch in 4 days, it's from the same Devs of Curse of The Dead Gods.
Lost interest when you said roguelite
Some of those points are trivial, lol, I notice anyone who reviews something goes out of their way to list every single thing you can complain about, from valid to trivial invalid
The fundamental purpose of product reviews is to provide critical feedback for potential consumers. Elements that may seem insignificant to some may prove to be vital for others. The objective is to scrutinize the review and evaluate whether the concerns raised align with one's preferences and expectations of the product.
Person who reviews thing, reviews alot the thing instead of a little of the thing

@@kin-3877 Or keep it on track and talk about actual problems instead of making some of them up. Plenty of valid reasons, some were fabricated to bulk it out as fodder. I guess you don't know how the world works 😂
@@Rastaanparta Yep. But don't start making up trivial nonsense that doesn't even need to be mentioned, just keep valid complaints is all I ever ask. Very few channels do that. It's like they believe the more insignificant the detail the better it makes them look. Some of them are just plain made up. For example, they said one thing in particular as a complaint that is the same in nearly every video game including big titles that they have left good reviews for but they didn't mention that same "problem" there. That's what I mean by made up for bulk and filler. No need
@@sanjayw9878 Ultimately, the overall assessment of a game is what matters. While some issues may appear less significant in the context of a well-functioning game, even minor grievances can become more pronounced in the presence of numerous larger concerns.
