Such a welcome demonstration of confidence from this team. Putting out a very generously long demo to reel in the players and then issuing out copies to publishers without any crazy review embargo. So much belief in their work and it is paying off. Day one purchase for me no doubt.
(the publisher sets the embargo, not the developer)
They got me. Played the demo for thr last hour and I’m hooked. (Pun intended)
Yeah my only complaint with the game after finishing is I wish there was more.
Hehe, "reel"
REEL
These 3 minute reviews really hit a good sweetspot of informative yet concise. It's a good format! Keep it up.
I'm off to lose my sanity at sea now...
Frost has such a wonderfully soothing voice that it makes me want to buy every game they review
Came to the comments section to say this exactly. I'd seriously love him narrating more content, whether that's more reviews or even a longer than 3 minute, more in depth series of reviews or content. His voice is seriously just enjoyable to listen to
@@Snowfrogthey gave him his own series, cold take
@@Snowfrog Well, there's the Cold Take videos he does, which are pretty damn good and have him talk longer.
Yeah, it’s like why isn’t he becoming a beloved voice actor?
I could have sworn I once watched a 3 minute review video where they credited the actual narrator...
I played the demo and was absolutely hooked. I am really looking forward to playing this.
The dev team also demonstrated in the steam forums that they have a very strong and clear vision. They know what they want to make and how they want to engage the player and the demo showed that.
Lol "hooked"
how did u play the demo on the switch
I played it as well, absolutely was down to get the full version RIGHT away.
Also I do like the "hooked" pun lol. Whether or not it was intentional.
It's not available any mode
(I don't think) @@stevenjohnson8736
I just picked this up a few days ago and it's definitely a recommend - the combination of relaxing gameplay and eerie atmosphere works really well.
I'm about 2/3 through the game right now and I'm HOOKED. It really is incredible.
How long has it took you? Seems some people say the game is 6 hours and some say 60.
@@mrman-yj3bn I went for all the achievements (except fully upgraded ship) and it took me a good 16 hours!
3 Minute Review, I definitely need to listen to these as they come out, it's a great format and well delivered
He started out the video calling it “a fishing adventure” and I couldn’t have been less interested. Then I watched the review and it’s going on my wishlist. Credit to the game, and the review. 👍🏼
Cant say it often enough: I love these reviews!
Short, on point and trustworthy. Thanks a lot!
Been excited for this game ever since I saw Gab Smolders play this way long ago. Cant wait for the full release as its definitely got my interest.
whata great transition after playing Dave The Driver lol
That packed in 10 minutes of info, without being rushed or speaking quickly. Great taste of the game, great video.
I love this game!!! Emphasis on the balance between cozy and engaging. The last game I got this into was Ooblets, which is oddly kind of similar in terms of the farming (fishing)/upgrading gameplay loop and mysterious larger story. But this game has a lot more spookiness and mystery to it and it was refreshing to get jump scared in such a nautical, thematic way. Fans of eldritch horror will definitely enjoy. I have to get ready for work in 20 minutes and I'm still thinking about playing this game, it's that fun.
I’m here because the reviewer has a voice that I’d pay to hear narrate Lovecraft’s writing - so was curious to hear how they’d cover this game!
Wow he could not display his love for the game enough in this review. I really have to give it a wishlist.
Give this guy an Audible contract. What a wonderful voice.
Meh, nothing special.
@@NoahMarcaynasty little girl
Frost?! Amazing, I'm so happy to hear your voice on this.
So, Sunless Sea, but for the casual gamer who doesn't like to read so much? That, and just slightly less completely unforgiving...
glad to hear its so good! I played the demo for like 8 min before I turned it off because I knew I wanted to buy it haha. definitely makes a good impression!
Also it has auto save that dumps into 1 save file as your only save.
Feels like Yahtzee would enjoy this game, would love to see an indie review ZP on it
Boats AND an inventory management minigame!
Found about this game on Get Indie Gaming, played the demo. And gotta say, what a game. Thanks for the deep dive review!
Thanks for playing Frost 🙏 This wasn't even on my radar man 🍻 Cheers!
Demo had great performance on switch handheld mode too!
to quote Bane: "what a lovely, lovely voice"
Played this game and went in as blind as possible and I LOVED it. Only downfall is that I'm finished with the game already but working on a 100% completion with getting all the fish and secrets.
"Eldritch fishing adventure" Well, that's me sold :D
Very clearly heavily inspired by Sunless Sea. I'm into it.
Definitely not a bad thing!
"The game is only about 3-6 hrs long. Me who has 36 hrs in the game already
Holy crap, someone actually made a video game that some commenter made long ago. I believe the dude said he wanted a fishing game that starts out normally but the further you went into the lake, the creepier the fish and other fishermen become until you straight up run into abominations like a "fisherman" that is a conglomeration of man, boat, and reel.
I see the game has a day counter. Is there a day limit before I run out of time to do things? If I take too long, do I get the bad ending? Will certain events only happen on certain days? Or is the day counter just for keeping track of time and if I so please I can just go at my own pace?
As far as I can tell it's just a counter. I'm nearing the game end but have been taking my time fishing, building my boat and exploring - I'm up into Day 190+ and I have seen no limitations due to time spent playing.
Best narrated review ever
The trailers for this game got me excited and made me do something i swore not to and buy the delux version day one and it restored some hope in the future of games because it actually is a full and complete game with no game breaking bugs or glitches (did get a bug where there was no audio but reloading fixed it)
I've been looking forward to this game for a long time, can't wait to play it!
So summary of the summary: this game is basically a fishing minigame, but turned into the entire gameplay loop with sprinkles of rougelike and horror, it also has room for completionists, maxing your boat, docking everywhere, seeing both endings and all the fish. Would recommend.
Already bought it. Waiting for release
I just bought this game and I am loving it! Definitely an example of less is more and atmosphere.
Did not expect to hear frosts voice, forgotten how much I'd missed it
This is Smite’s frost right? Didn’t know he did this kind of stuff too haha.
Got that radio voice.
Verified on Steam Deck so I think Dredge will be great fun to play on that. Can’t wait!
I played the demo at next fest and it truly is an amazing game 👍🏻
His voice really reminds me of Terry Wogan. That's a compliment 😂
I just got this the other day, when I could finally spare a bit of time for gaming around work and life things. I already VERY much wanted to play the full version after taking part in the beta. The game demo was super cute and the full game is so far exactly what I was hoping and more so far! I am taking my time with it, so when I write a review it can be more thorough. I expect unless they messed something up I am going to rave about it.
So did you play it ?
@@JAY-bb7yc I haven't finished it, but if you played the demo it was just as fun, but obviously WAY more content. This game imo is worth it. I mostly haven't finished it cause I just like toot tooting around the place catching different fish
Just now hearing about this and it looks sweet!
Sounds like a 3D version of Sunless Sea.
Well this and dave the diver are like 20bucks each us and dave has demo on switch im going to look at dredge because im interested. Correction dredge is 25.00 but i see it sale right now for 18 something.
lol after a few hours of gameplay I have a broken boat and can’t get back to repair it before sundown. So I have to start from scratch. Kinda silly.
Frost! How long have you been doing this?
Adding Information on how it works on Steam Deck would be great.
It’s fully verified for it.
this looks so much like the longharbor comic
Approaching an island in the dark distance, only to have vanish as you near it must be very confounding!
Thanks for the review
Reminds me of a game i played on android. More steampunk like graphics. I cant remember the name of it but theres a pc version as well. If anyone has an idea, please remind me
interesting sanity mechanics
looks like a perfect game for deck
So Far I really love this little game. So much so I want to print a little fighting trawler and make it light up in the dark.
I'm debating getting this for PC or Switch. The mobility of the switch seems great for this game. But the graphics seem horrid compared to the PC version. Any thoughts?
Cant wait for this game
already finished the game, its really nice enjoyable piece of game sir !
It is a great game, but to be honest, unless you don't mind spending 20+ dollars on a 10-ish hour game with little replay value, wait for a sale. Compared to other similar games, this is kind of expensive and since this is foremost a story game with some fishing (not a fishing game with a story), there is not a lot to replay once you finish and there isn't a lot of content. What's there is great, just a bit to little for the full price. Something like Dave the Diver has a lot more stuff to do for less cash and more game elements.
Who wouldn't mind? Spending $25 for 10 hours of a great time in its entirety >>>>>>> spending $60 and wasting 300+ hours by grinding for only 5 hours of actually enjoyable gameplay.
Padded games have never been a better value. Never.
I'm a few hours in and it's awesome. More importantly, it's well priced. The panic system is really fun to manage, and the threats it brings are interesting and have variety. I'm not very far into the story, but I hope it explains why/how the panic happens. I'd definitely buy a story expansion or sequel.
The gameplay is good, but I believe the game is over priced. I beat the game in under 10 hours. This should just be a $3 rental game.
This review was wonderfully written and read.
The voice sounds familiar. Is it the same person that does New Yorker articles on Audm?
Damn why are the cool games only so short....
I'm still in awe that someone made the tumblr meme fishing game, but I'm even more shocked that it looks this well made. Bravo!
I have been playing the demo (convinced me to buy it for the Switch).
It reminds me a little of Sunless Sea, or gives me a little vibe of it.
I'm debating getting this for PC or Switch. The mobility of the switch seems great for this game. But the graphics seem horrid compared to the PC version. Any thoughts?
@@RubiksBotES haven't looked at the PC version.
Have played the demo on a telly and they are fine. It's all clear.
wait wtf, the other frost? from smite?
Seems like a well done game.
I suppose you think being a part of the escapist lets you just pass judgement on these games; like some sort of Judge Dredge, if you will
So this is the fishing version of Darkest Dungeon? I'm in.
I rarely pay full price for a game, I tend to wait, but this one I paid full price and don't regret it.
i bought it and its a good game, but want i want to do is just go around and fish and explore during calm day light, but the story and horror and music and everything outside of the relaxing fishing element of the game is a drag for me personally. Still worth $25, but a good portion of the game and the quick day to night cycles drew me away tbh.
Best way to play this; console, switch, pc?
I've never had a game rated E give me such primal fear inducing scares, so it has that going for it...
This game is so much fun
I hate how every review starts off by saying “repaying your debt.” Your debt is $25 and you pay it off with 2 loads of fish, which is literally we mintues
I do enjoy a completely *n* o *r* m *a l* day of fishing
One of my most anticipated games of the YEAR! Can't wait! I would LOVE to get a physical edition of this one day.
6hr? I'll get a repack.
Your wonderful voice made the whole thing sound sinister. I would liken it very much if you narrated my life.
The novelty wore off quick
Ok, than maybe an average of about 13 hours? That sounds great, except I just got well over 300 hours out of a different $25 game called Valheim. I guess I'll just wait for it to go on at least 50% sale or better yet come to GamePass Ultimate...
300 hours? you have maybe 5 hours of valheim and 295 hours of padded grind that can't be called actual gameplay.
Such an amazing game.
I think the game is excellent, but I wish it was a slower burn in terms of story. It shows its hand too soon imo
Really wish it was just a fishing game
Played on the weekend, the game, not the demo. I like the graphics a lot, as I do like the story, but too much micro managment in this game. No time to really explore, as your time runs out fast. And you can't stay the night out, at least not in the beginning, as you will always be punished. Not enough random element. Taking damage means repair costs, and you take a lot of damage. If they would cut down on the punishment, make it more random instead of repetitive, and give more time to explore, that would make the game so much better.
Your voice👌
now get ZP to review it.
I haven't played it, but from the 3 hours of gameplay I've seen the game seems hollow or shallow. Like its got good polish and a lot of nice little touches and content, but I really disliked what seemed to be a huge lack of skill, lack of customization, and generally even a lack in story.
It's not a bad game; far from it. It just seems like it's not for me. Maybe debatably not for _most_ dedicated/hardcore gamers, even. I liked Stardew Valley quite a lot, so I don't know why I feel so much apathy or "dislike" for this. After thinking some more, I think it's due to SV having some quite significant customization (of the farm, and the character), varied gameplay, varied _choice_ in gameplay, some surprisingly good relationship stories, and even some skill in things like memory, optimizing, arcade cabinet games, and combat.
Dredge just seemed like a mostly empty grind on rails.
Hello 👋
Then you realize the game is a bit shallow. But ok you aren't having a terrible time... and then... then you find out that some quests are secretly timed. That starting them early can screw you out of completing them. This means you will lose access to PERMANENT upgrades because you decided to explore.
Another proof that work inspired by lovecraft work better than those directly adapting his works
Call me Ishmael
This looks cute

25€ is quite much for a game that can be finished in 6 hours :/
Its got 6 hours of actual gameplay though. Sure you can pad your actually 2 hour game with 300 hours of grinding. But that fucking sucks. Ill take a 6 hour well designed game over an artificially padded grind fest any day of the week.
@@Wylie288 I agree. But I think it's too expensive. The ruined king took idk 30 hours or so to finish, was probably much more effort than this game and costed only 30€.
i played 20 hours of it in 2 days no it doesnt take only hours
Linux, please.
I play on linux and it's working fine
@@coffeedude
I tried to install the GOG Version with Wine, didn't work. Same with Lutris and PlayonLinux.
after about 5 hours in i thought "i know of just the reviewer who would love this game", glad to see i was right.
Thank you for telling me that this game only lasts three times six hours at most. Pretty sick of games that claimed completion hours is in the double digits only to discover that most of it was padding with no actual meat on their bones.
I mean 20/25 hours for a gane like this is good! Not every game needs to be 60hrs plus and it's only £20.
"only"
This is such a dumb comment. “Bare bones it’s 6 hours.” But if you are a completionist like me, 15-20 hours it’s t bad. It’s not like it’s a $40 or $60 dollar game. When I read you comment, it was before finishing the video and I was immediately out on the game, even though I was really looking forward to it. But most games like these aren’t about the ending. It’s about the journey. So you comment is a little ridiculous. Maybe you should stick to CoD so you can enjoy never ending gameplay.
I was pleasantly surprised with this game! Definitely a lot of room for mastery and with a richer gameplay experience. Everything feels like it matters because of the lack of padding. Lean and mean, is how I would describe its content. Definitely recommend
Fascinating how entitled some people can act towards small teams of dedicated developers. This comment is a disgrace to this game, and honestly, I hope you do not buy it. The game is far too exceptional for the padding you have in place of a brain.
Thanks for this. It has been removed from the wishlist.
I think I will stop watching reviews and buy the game.
