12 Tips and Tricks you MUST Know in Dredge

- When starting out in Dredge it’s easy to get lost both in the map and in the strategy. I have gone ahead and put together all the things I wish I knew when starting out in Dredge including slime things that may seem obvious and some quick hacks not mentioned anywhere else.
I broke down everything I wish I knew into the following 12 tips and tricks to create the best beginner’s guide I can.

Are you ever getting lost in the open waters or just confused on when to use skills like Haste and Manifest while playing Dredge? Maybe you just want to figure out how to make the most money? Who are those strange hooded characters? Or maybe you are just frustrated trying to locate fish you swear are in this area because the encyclopedia claims it is right under you?
It’s easy to feel like you’re up to your neck in not only water but also the strategy and planning when sailing in Dredge. Luckily for you I have gone ahead and drowned so you don’t have to. My name is BANSHREDDEDCHEESE and I’m a streamer over on Twitch and a CZcamsr who’s not afraid to dive head first into unknown waters and flounder around till I can figure out what is going on. These tips I’m about to tell you range from “no really?” up to some pretty clever tricks you likely wouldn’t think of. Dredge is a 2023 indie adventure fishing video game developed by New Zealand studio Black Salt Games and published by Team17. The player controls a fisherman, who encounters increasingly Lovecraftian creatures as he ventures out further into an open world archipelago.

Edit: With the 1.1 Map Update you no longer need to use crab pots as map markers and the Hooded Figures' quests are no longer timed so you can feel free to interact with them all you want!

One tip for keeping fish fresh is you can move fish from your storage to your trawl net. While fish are in the trawl net they won’t age and can’t accidentally fall overboard so it’s a great way to make sure your catch reaches its quest destination in good condition. Perfect for making sure the hooded guys get their takeout.
How?
@@xanider5098 You have to do that at a docking spot where you can access your storage, at some of the quest givers and at the black rocks with fish shapes carved in to them. You can't do it in the middle of the water.
It's the best way to store fish for quests especially if you need to deliver them far away.
Here's a pretty basic tip that still took me a few tries to notice: When the marker swaps segments during the basic fishing mini-game, the direction it's going in the new segment will ALWAYS be the same as if it had completed the full circle.
e.g. If it was going from left to right in the top segment, it will be going from the top downwards in the lower right segment
It's a little thing, but once you notice it you can get into a nice groove and catch fish much faster.

I really want this game to do well. If it does, there could be an expansion pack with more goodies. If we're lucky, we might get a full sequel with better graphics and higher production values. This game deserves to be a franchise.
I would LOVE to see DLCs with new areas added just outside the map allowing you to expand out further to the unknown! I'll be watching for any news on expansions, and updates and will try to be the first to talk about it!
@BanShreddedCheese it reminds me a lot of Legend of Zelda Wind Waker. But the whole Lovecraftian meets Moby Dick thing is such a specific itch to scratch. I love that this exists.
the graphics and production value are perfectly fine. A DLC or sequel with a new storyline would be neat.
There's nothing wrong with the graphics. Not every game has to be hyperealistic.
I don’t feel the graphics need any improvement on this game. I think it’s perfect looking. I’d love a sequel. But even if we get a nice dlc I’d be happy.
Use a bunch of the tiny engine from the top right. If you take damage or overheat haste you don't totally lose speed
I kept the engine from the beggining the whole run on top of a more powerful engine; it also worked as a backup engine.

This helped soooo much! I got the game yesterday and I've been freaking out about "what if I damage my boat too much?? Will I have too restart???" So it's really useful knowing it's not as big of a deal as I thought!

For learning the books the quickest way possible, you can fish/dredge and fail the mini games for as long as you want. fishing/dredging is the quickest way to pass time while you are awake.

The bottom right area youre sent to with the big sea monster lurking about...i think i broke it
The beast started chasing me, and i narrowly passed by its face on a strike attempt, perfect dodge. The monster turned for round two, where i began to jet around the smaller rocks with boost, trying to get it confused long enough that i could get away. Well it worked, too well. I can travel around the area scott-free now, the big sucker hangs around where I juked it, seemingly still salty it got out-maneuvered by a fat hunk of metal
I got to the location needed for the whaler EASILY thanks to this, and had time to check out the waterfall...ooh so long
I find extra research parts either in the metal dredge locations, on direct research dredge spots, and occasionally in a shipwreck on some island
I wouldn't hold my breath to see one during a cloth or wood dredge, I've literally not seen ONE from those sources so far
There is a strange statue near the center home island on a little seperate island, it's got fish shapes on it when you interact. I left a shark in there, thinking it was a sacrifice altar to cthulhu. Forgot about it, checked back an in-game week-ish later, and it was still fresh as the day I put it in! Cthulhu fish fridge!!!
I have done something similar a few times where I would just juke it for a minute or two until it got bored and left me alone for a day or two

I always have such problems with the eel in Gale Cliffs so I go for the relics in Stellar Basin and the swamp (forgot the name 😅) first. Then I go to Gale Cliffs, armed with Banish 😁
I was having bigger problems remembering to give the eel to the villager before it fully rotted so it took a good few attempts xp

IRL dock tires are great, provided the mounting hardware doesn't stand too proud. Unfortunately, around here, the dock tires are usually only mounted on the space reserved for sea planes.

Let me just say, I fell into the trap of prioritizing the engine first simply because I thought you needed to upgrade the engine in order to move to the bigger islands. This is not true and now I’m stuck in my first world because I don’t have the right fishing pole. Nothing in the game tells you to prioritize poles. I love this game, but this was a huge upset for me

I’ve explained on streams before but the long story short is store bought shredded cheese has a starch coating that makes it taste worse. Freshly grated cheese is just better!
I can totally get behind that, a few years ago my wife and I switched to shredding our own and never looked back.

Why should i use a crab trap to mark a spot, you can mark it on the map with an icon? 🤔
Map markers are a new addition to the 1.1 Update that released earlier this week! Prior to that update there was no way other than crab pots to mark the map

Seems i need multiple rods to catch the range of fish, yet not enough inventry space, can't make sense of this. Love the game, only just started but feel I'm doing everything wrong, frustrating. Great vid though, too annoyed with the games vaguenes about everything.. had no idea what that roaming eye was about. Keep playing, i guess
I'm still just as stuck, ha! So we have to throw away our rods to buy new ones, then throw them when needing to repurchase the other one again? With an almost empty storage space, it's stupid that I can't store rods here, frustrating.
