Have the exact same Guitar, found "Vanguard" handwritten on the stock under the pick guard, couple years ago, pulled from the closet, dusted it off, & decided do a little restore, & try make it playable, but soon found out the trust rod was stripped, & no longer would adjust, but further tinkering & investigation, I realized that it had likely been tightened so much over the years, it had run out of adjustment, so with some fiddling & a lot patience, I was able to extract the nut, then fabricated a bushing, & with some careful removal of the wood around the truss rod was able to insert the bushing, & get the nut started again, which was also stripped, & needed to reshape & downsize the socket, only to have it break loose from it's hold on the other end....crap! well, it just snowballed from there, & tried My luck at fret board removal removal, with some education watching Your vids, built a double action truss rod, was able to make it fit, & one thing led to another, & routered body to accept a pair of double humbuckers, built a leather pickguard, wrapped the chrome bridge cover with the same leather, sanded & stained the body & neck to compliment the leather, made antler nobs for the volume, tone & three way switch, also used antler to replace the fret makers, & even added small makers along the top edge of the neck, & also done the same for the tuning machine nobs, mine was also missing the Kay emblem when I purchased it, & a Signature Amp, from a local lady who run a bar, that was Her husband's, who had recently passed, package deal for $30 ....oh yeah, also replaced the frets too, with gold frets,,,,all in all, turned out pretty nice, & plays as well.....would send a pic, but not entirely sure how, perhaps just locate Your email.....anyway, just thot I'd share, as it was my first electric guitar as a kid too.....
    Peace Out.....& Beyonder

I really like these old guitars. They're a window to the past and how affordable guitars were designed and manufactured. It makes you wonder why they made some of the design choices they did.

This Kay Vanguard was my first electric guitar back in the 60's when I was a teen-aged wanna be rock star! I played it through a small tube type Supro amp and eventually gave both of them to my then young brother-in-law when I bought my Gibson ES330.
The Vanguard and Supro are now collectibles and worth lots more than I paid for them back in the day.
I don't think he ever did learn to play.
I would dearly love to have the guitar and the amp back in my collection.
Thanks for the memories Jerry! 😃

I had to work on a neck like that over summer, and adjusting the nut was getting me nowhere fast. So, I took the neck off, put small wood blocks on each end of the fret board, set a straight edge on the blocks and put a clamp in the center of the neck and tightened it so the middle of the neck would rise up to the straight edge. Good old summer temps of 90, I set the neck in all its traction outside in the back yard on a stump in the sun and let the heat work on the wood and get it more flexible. I did this for a few days, bringing it in overnight and starting the next day when the temp got up. The truss rod was loosened to begin with of course, and sure enough, I got my relief back to where it was supposed to be. Amazing how over the decades, the wood wants to hold that curve for dear life lol

My brother brought me an old closet find to repair for a gentleman selling his home and moving into a managed care facility . He was unaware it had been found and I was told it was a gift from HIS father . I cleaned it up , set it up , making it playable , but didn’t have the time to repair the electronics . I hope I made a new memory.

I got a 61 KAY Montcliff tiger street maple when I was 14 years old in 1961. It has to speed bump pick ups and the patina is fantastic. I sent it to Randy at the house, but never sleeps. It had neck issues. It was the more expensive model that Kay made. And it has, and it has amazing tone to it after it was repaired. Gold hardware. I have a lot of different guitars, but I get the old Kay and it has amazing sound from those speed bumps pick ups. He did a few videos on this guitar. If you look him up on his channel, it was about two years ago.

It had a bowed neck the whole time I practiced on it through 1977 -1980 "If "I knew, then what I know in 2022 about guitar repair I could of fixed it I've even heated up a skunk stripe and removed a broken truss rod. Reminds me of my old starter guitar in the 70's. It was a Gibson style f hole with a pickup. I ended up removing the pickup and kept it acoustic. I believe it was a Trutone. I played the heck out of it. Knowing what I know now, I am sure the intonation was way off, and likely the neck needed a reset. My mom sold it at a garage sale while I was in the Army, along with my Epiphone 12 string. Thanks Emeri for this blast from the past.

Yes, it's a Kay Vanguard, just like my first electric guitar! Can't remember if mine was a single or two pickup model, but otherwise identical. Mine was missing the bridge cover as I recall (55+ years ago). Knobs were identical, silver that was partially worn off. Mine did still have the "kay" headstock badge. It had very high action, and I had no clue that I could have adjusted it!!! It doid actually sound ok (thru a modified hi-fi)

I had to have mine refretted- the original frets were beyond leveling. Along with that had a bone nut put in. I don’t have the bridge cover and am looking for one.
Good idea leaving the pickguard in place. Mine shrunk a little after I took it off. There are full size pots in there with a paper in oil capacitor. I love this little beast, great tone from that Zippo lighter pickup

I have the same early 60s guitar which was given to me by my grandfather in the late 70s. The only difference is that mine was branded as a Penncrest made for sale by J.C. Penney. My guitar had to have a neck reset - by carving more wood out of the neck pocket (the opposite of adding a shim). Also, the original brass frets were extremely rough. So, as it was manufactured, it was barely playable (except as a slide guitar). Finally, a few years ago I had a professional luthier give it a "full meal deal" including the neck reset and installing new nickle frets. Even though the guitar is relatively small, it has a slightly longer scale than a Fender, so I prefer to use .009 - .042 super light gauge strings. The old-school pancake pickup sounds great (similar to a P-90). So now I really enjoy playing my vintage American "Penny". Now, I think I will give it some polish and wax like you showed in the video. Thanks so much for your videos!

I enjoyed that. That was my first “real’ guitar as well. Mine is a Silvertone and like you when i was a teenager I took it apart and repainted it. The original looked like it was painted with a brush. I still have it but I never put it back together as I always thought I’d put more coats on it. I’m an almost 70yr women now and probably won’t be asked to play in a band again but I think I’ll get it out and put it back together now. It is in great condition but as I recall it had a hum. Probably a ground, I hope I can get it out. Thanks

I have learned that a lightly dampened with water cloth with some “elbow grease” will clean up a multitude of sins.❤️🧐🤔

A giant ship's engine broke down and no one could repair it, so they hired a Mechanical Engineer with over 30 years of experience.
He inspected the engine very carefully, from top to bottom. After seeing everything, the engineer unloaded his bag and pulled out a small hammer.
He knocked something gently. Soon, the engine came to life again. The engine has been fixed!
A week later the engineer mentioned to the ship owner that the total cost of repairing the giant ship was $20,000.
    "What?!" said the owner.
"You did almost nothing. Give us a detailed bill."
    The answer is simple:
    Tap with a hammer: $2
Know where to knock and how much to knock: $19,998
The importance of appreciating one's expertise and experience...because those are the results of struggles, experiments and even tears.

I have a very sad and unfortunate story for you.
When my Father was young, he bought one of these for my Uncle.
It was the star in the eyes of quite a few nephews and nieces for a long time.
When I was a teen around 14/15, I was in a band with "friends", and my Uncle let me use this guitar because the one I had, had been stolen.
I used it for quite a while, and these had a very large and extravagant light metal badge on the head stock.
After some time, I bought another guitar from a place called Daddy's Junky Music Store, so I didn't need this one any longer.
I went to the other guitarists house to get it to bring it back to my uncle and got the run around for about a week... until I finally found out what happened...
This jerk, (who really couldn't even play) had used my uncle's guitar one day when I wasn't around, and pulled a Pete Townsend with it, and smashed it.
I won't go into anymore detail but, I never found a way to tell my uncle or especially my Father.
Over time, it was just never mentioned.
Both have passed away, and the guilt still looms heavy in my mind
So it was nice to see this video, the thumbnail caught my attention instantly.

You might want to at least check the ground wire on the bridge of an electric guitar.. Just to be sure the kid who plays it next isn't killed by it. You never know when they're old like this, and whatever old amp they might plug into. These older amps have a capacitor that protects the high voltage from reaching the coil circuit.. But sometimes when really old they short out. Not good. This earned it the name the "death capacitor".
