Restoring a 1960's Silvertone - Guitar Restoration

- Salvaging a piece of history. Episode 3 in the 1965 Silvertone restoration trilogy. The only thing dirty guitars need is love. I can't imagine what circumstances had to occur for a guitar to become this neglected. Under all that grime was a gem. These old guitars are certainly quirky but also so innovative for the era. Once setup properly, they are lovely to play. Believe it or not, there is no ground to the bridge and it is the quietest guitar I've ever played. I did modify the electronics a bit and I grounded all the pots and switch to the jack. The intonation is spot on even with that slim piece of rosewood used as a bridge. And my new favorite thing is using hydrogen peroxide to make yellowed plastic parts white again. Works like magic when place under the Texas sun.
This one is staying in my collection. Enjoy.

Awesome! I owned one of these in 1970
Amazing job!
Well done Sir!
I love these old wacky shaped guitars! They definitely deserve more love. Great restoration, and I love the Everlong fingerstyle arrangement. Beautiful!
That guitar is so dang cool. Nice work!
13:50 I've never seen a guitar with the electronics wrapped like that, it's so interesting, almost like a burrito lol
Dude, you have a lot of patience. Wow looks great.
Look on CZcams for video of David Lindley playing this same Silvertone model with his band ElRayo-X at Reggae on the River. The song is "Quarter of a Man".
I would have to make something similar ton the String Butler that I have on my Les Paul for this guitar, the break angle of those strings most definitely will have tuning issues.
It is most definitely an interesting guitar, I love the pickup covers and the materials it is made from, and the over engineered shielding is just awesome!
It has a sound that is unique also, I would have loved to have seen the production line of this instrument!
I have the same guitar, It's amazing
LOL, that fretboard was screaming for oil... something about that headstock that I love... maybe it's the diagonal string alignment.
Nice Everlong version as well.
Love the video. When restoring a guitar i usually prefer to leave a bit of patina on it, but you’ve done an excellent job.
For some reason i find the music very relaxing.
Really nice version of everlong. Congrats wonderful vid
This deserves waaaaay more views !! Wow .. amazing
Great video. Love the guitar! Though the background music kinda freaks me out.
That masking tape is worth a lot of money! 😂
Don’t know which is cooler… that you restored a timeless classic, or the video you made doing it! Felt like I was watching a master restore the Mona Lisa. Bravo!! And thank you!
Also, can I safely assume that the music is something you composed? If so, another bravo! Simply amazing!
Brilliant job,,,,Thank you!
Nice one! Love the music
The little copper shielding box was interesting.
That’s mint!
Great guitar and great video, half the comments don't even know what they're talking about.
more like an autopsy creepy music. cool guitar i had one back in '63
David Lindley often played one of these on big stages with his band ElRayo-X. Look for the Reggae on the River concert on CZcams where he plays "Quarter of a Man".
New name for video, Cleaning guitar!
Please make more videos like this! But maybe next time if you do another video like this, please give more context on the instrument you're restoring.
I'll definitely to more vids like this. The unboxing video has a bit of history into the guitar and many of its innovations.
I've got one of those guitars that I bought in 1982 for $20:00 with an amp in case !
Отмыл гитару? Молодец. А где реставрация?
Whe you took the foil wrap off the pots was yours signed by "Ed"?
I just bought the guitar only today, originally bought it to harvest the pick ups and pots for custom build...
I grabbed mine in a just shop in upper NY...$40
Nice video. What product did you use for the fretboard wood?
The Dunlop System 65 kit.
@@MarkGutierrez Thanks!
I'm loving watching this beauty come back to life. What is the liquid you're using with the wipes to clean?
Nothing magical. Just 99% Isopropyl Alcohol. There are a lot of fancy solvents out there used on antiquities. But I'm sure they are mostly just alcohol. Thanks for watching!
So, were copper boxes used much as shielding? not seen that before (not an expert mind)
Really enjoyed your interpretation of everlong btw
What's with the scary music?... Just do the guitar already
Creepy
Love these videos. What cleaner is the blue pump spray bottle?
99% isopropyl alcohol.
Great Video! What did you use to clean the side walls? Alcohol? Hydrogen Peroxide? They came out so white and clean looking. I found one of these at a goodwill last week and I am trying to clean it up. So far I haven't been able to get those white side walls very clean. Thanks!
Hydrogen Peroxide and a toothbrush
@@MarkGutierrez Thanks!
What was the mystery tincture in the drip bottle lol
Alcohol. Which I don't recommend using on vintage instruments. It was too strong of a solution and impacted the finish. I now use the Dunlop cleaning solution (saline and soap) for vintage finishes.
Am watching while stuck in bed with Covid, this shit soothing af
Yep....That body shape and the fun contours are begging for a headless version. How fun would that be? A modern amp case...We are in a sweet spot of micro digital processors. Same color only more modern with the gold flake...Yep...that would be sweet... First headless with lipstick pickups!
There's no way that piece of "shielding" was original. I mean if it was, then... Jeezless!
Oh it was original and it was the quietest guitar I've ever played. No outside interference. I'll make an assumption that the "thicker" the shielding the better. The microns of shielding paint on modern guitars can't be as good, right?
@@MarkGutierrez I have just double-checked it, and you're right, it's factory, I'm honestly baffled. I genuinely thought it was fabricobbled by a previous owner's in a "There, I fixed it!" style. Fascinating. I'm sure it does the job right, but I still cannot imagine someone at the factory sticking THIS into an istrument with a straight face. BTW, there's a screw in the neck at 20:20 under what seems an original paint. I assume it's factory too?
Cool video except for the annoying ass ambient music that's way too loud. It would be an awesome video if you told us why we should care about the guitar you are restoring.
Adjustable wrench 😑
This background music sounds like from a horror movie in space. Not really something pleasant and doesn't fit the video. Video itself is good though.
Not really a restauration.. just intensive cleaning and maintenance.
Why the drama?? Is not a museum piece after all .
cleaning and maintenance, which restore it to a more playable condition. it is, by definition, a restoration
Ugly as it was
Just like your mother
@@otavio30LoL ! ;)
I was so hyped for this video !! Terrible music and nothin else. 👎
