    The book this is based on is Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose, along with a combat memoir by another paratrooper I won’t name. Dick Winters wrote his combat memoir after the series was made.

    When WW2 began, family members could still be grouped together in a unit. However... in late 1942, five brothers (the Sullivans) were killed when their ship was sunk near the Solomon Islands. After that... the armed forces began splitting family members up so that it was less likely that an entire family would be wiped out.

    The "slop" they were being served was creamed chipped beef on toast, or as it is lovingly referred to "shit on a shingle"
    It is very similar to biscuits and gravy. I used to love it.

      My Dad to this day won't eat SOS or biscuits and gravy, hasn't since he got outta the army in 71

      My mom would make it occasionally, but she didn't properly rinse off the chipped beef, so it would be VERY salty! If not for that, it is actually a good comfort food.

    The men gave Sobel credit for training them. He was invited to their reunions but he never came to any.

    So excited for your reactions to this series. It really is a masterpiece and I think everyone should see it at least once.
    And it really is sobering to remember just how young they all were and what they did for all of us future generations.

      Ayee let’s go Gary! I’m excited to watch everyone seems to love it. I know the fact they were my age, mostly younger is crazy to think about I can’t quite wrap my head around it. We owe them more than we could ever and did ever repay

    FWIW, that stuff they were eating in the chow hall, is affectionately know by military personnel as S.O.S. (Shit On a Shingle). It is toast with "creamed beef" ladled over top of it. Every branch of the military service has this on the menu. In my U.S. Air Force, it was usually eaten at breakfast ..... Much like a poor man's replacement for biscuits and gravy.

      My dad was in the Army in the early 50s and he would make that for breakfast now and then when I was little. I always enjoyed it. :)

      My Dad (Army vet) used to make this for us kids too. He always put a fried egg on top and it was delicious.

    If you guys wind up watching the series The Pacific which was also done by Hanks and Spielberg that show will give you the timeline of the battle in the Pacific!! But if I'm not mistaken it was late 1942 when the first significant Battle of the Pacific against the Japanese took place at Guadalcanal. So that was when Winters and the Easy company boys were STILL training in North Carolina and England!!

    David Schwimmer was maybe the only "name" in this show, with minor shout-outs to Dale Dye as Colonel Sink who has had a lengthy career as the trainer of actors for war movies, and to Ron Livingston of Office Space fame as Nixon.
    Damien Lewis (Winters) wasn't that well-known, even in the UK.
    Since then of course, a significant number of these actors have gone onto become huge stars.

    You points out the food.
    It was chipped beef (thin slices of beef that were canned) severed over white toast in a cream gravy . Known as S.O.S. ( Sh!t On a Shingle) in the military

    They started separating siblings after the USS Juneau was sunk and 5 brothers, the Sullivans, all died at once. After that they wouldn't allow them in the same units.

    Both of my grandpas served in both wars. Makes you think what they really went through. This is such a great series.
    I would suggest watching with subtitles cause it’s hard to hear in the next episodes till the end

    So what most don’t ever learn about is that there was another wave that went in before the Airborne Assault, they were the Airborne Pathfinders. These were paratroopers that landed with radio beacons and guiding lights to direct the assault force to their drop zones.
    Another thing is Dwight D Eisenhower was a true leader. He had a prepared letter should the invasion had failed, where he takes all responsibility.
    “Our landings in the Cherbourg-Havre area have failed to gain a satisfactory foothold and I have withdrawn the troops My decision to attack at this time and place was based upon the best information available. The troops, the air and the Navy did all that bravery and devotion to duty could do. If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt it is mine alone."

      Oh wow I didn’t know that, but makes sense I mean I just learned here about the airborne assault, had no clue that happened before the troops hit the beach. Didn’t know ab that letter too, really awesome comment thank you!

    Yessss!! This show and these men are legendary. Winters book you mentioned is also incredible and full of inspiration. Definitely recommend checking it out if you ever need some motivation. We cannot compare to that generation hahah

    I’ve watched a lot of Band of Brothers reaction videos. (My favourite tv series of all time). This is the first one where one person has seen it and the other has not. Looking at one of you who knows what’s coming up and the other reacting for the first time has been fun so far.
    Query. You guys look young, is this series older than both of you? The show is 23 years old, and still looks better than almost anything being put out now.

    If you're going all the way with this...be prepared to grow, laugh, learn and suffer with these characters. The first episode is in some ways my favorite, if only for the innocence and the fact that I know what lies ahead for these men. This was when their biggest threats were "Army noodles with ketchup." I love the power move Winters makes by literally grabbing the pen out of Sobel's hand while he was abusing his power...it's brilliant, and a true story. Hard to call this a TV show honestly, it's a 12 hour Saving Private Ryan in quality...CURRAHEE!

    Your friend is correct, it is towards the end of the war . It started in 1939. At this point, Germany has invaded Poland, Belgium and France (to name a few) and kicked us allies out of mainland Europe 1940 at Dunkirk. Then came Battle of Britain to stop Germany invading. Pearl Harbour1941 bought US into the war officially tho they had been supporting us As Britain succeeded in repelling the Germans it was then possible to have a base where the allies forces could gather and hence the invasion known as D Day in 1944. The end of the War in Europe , VE Day was 1945.
    You were talking about the Pals Regiments. Most small villages and towns here have memorials for WW1. Whole communities could have their menfolk wiped out in a few days.
    There is the story of an estate in Cornwall. It had many acres of beautiful gardens. The men who worked there went off WW1 together and very few returned. The garden were left to disappear under brambles and ivy, overgrown and lost. In 1990 parts of the garden were found and a great restoration effort has brought it back to life. You can now visit The Lost Gardens of Heligan and there is a plaque and memorial to the workers who went off to the trenches.
    You are correct in that the policy of Pals Regiments was changed.

    I trust you now do realize that there was no ground warfare in No Carolina (Sobel gets the company killed in a war game) not in England (old man on the bike) and all that was just training. Make sure you notice and read the text on the screen that indicates where they were.

    You guys look like you are probably in your early to mid twenties so I just want to make you AWARE and have you KEEP in MIND that THESE men that you will watch through this series were YOUR AGE when they were doing this!! I think the average age of a soldier in World War II was 20 years old. Winters may have been the oldest of the whole crew and he was only 24!!
    So just IMAGINE being YOUR age and dropping your life to go FIGHT and perhaps NEVER come home!!😮😮
    This is WHY they are called the GREATEST GENERATION!!!❤

      Correct guess and I cannot imagine going to war at all, let alone at my age. Another comment said we will never compare to that generation and I couldn’t agree more. Bravery is an understatement but the only word I can think of, leaving home and like you said not knowing if you’ll ever come back. I can’t even fathom it to be honest, and the fact it wasn’t THAT long ago is even crazier

      @@ItzWilson2 ... I'm sure it was, but that's a pretty big reveal. Now there's no suspense for anything Winters is going to do. You know he's gonna make it. That's why they don't show you the names of the older men from Easy Company that are being interviewed at the beginning of some episodes, they don't want you to know who makes it and who doesn't. Plus, he was incorrect, none of this show came from the book Winters wrote.
