The whole point of the march is that you have to be able to walk that long without drinking water in the field sometimes. As for the sergeants writing that letter, as long as you're on contract, refusing to serve where you're ordered to is not an option. It is an act of mutiny, and the fact that Colonel Sink ONLY settled for busting one of them to private and transferring another one out is leniency. However, the fact that all of Easy Company's NCOs signed that letter also told Sink that Captain Sobel didn't have the confidence of his men and that he needed to reassign him in order to resolve the situation before they actually went into battle.

One thing you learn in the military, your brother never goes alone. If he goes up the hill you go up the hill, enough said. Comments from a former combat engineer and combat veteran❤

A Quaker lives a very religious and simple life, doesn't drink, smoke, etc. Of course, it's more complex than that, but that is essentially the meaning behind calling Winters a "Quaker". Quakers were in general also against fighting in war and were allowed "Conscientious Objector" status, which allowed them to serve in non-combat roles if drafted.

Reactors always ask whether Sobel is going to give Winters his promotion, as Colonel Sink "suggested".
    But it wasn't a suggestion...

Senior officers will often suggest something with the understanding that it is actually an order and they are are just being polite.
The episode did not include the fact that Sink first actually "suggested" to Sobel that the entire court martial thing be forgotten and the paperwork "lost". Sobel instead refilled the paperwork which would have pissed off Sink immensely even before the letter from the NCOs.

I know this is a month old and you've already watched almost the whole series by now, so I don't know if you've come to this realisation or not, but Sobel was a great drill instructor. They were going into WAR, he had to be that tough with them, he was supposed to. Some men of Easy Company gave him credit later for what he did because he was part of why those who survived survived the war. He was bad in the field, but as a drill instructor he did his job well. He wasn't supposed to go soft and easy on them and be their friend. He was prepairing them for battle where their lives were on the line.
Weird to wish a real person would die btw. He was a big asshole, but dude lol

Bill didn’t grab the jacket with the letter of his dead brother by accident. They placed it in a spot they knew he’d take it so they could give him the bad news without saying it face to face.

Also the series was filmed entirely in England which probably explains why most of the cast are British

A Quaker takes "Thou shall not kill." to have no exceptions It is a sin to kill the guy shooting at you and your mates. BTW, they also do't drink. The also avoid buttons - but that is irrelevant. :)

In the scene, where Winters was forced to stand at attention in front of Sobel, Sobel had a sort of "Napoleon Complex" and was trying to get revenge on Winters, because of the "Major Horton" prank by the rest of the company. He gave Winters a choice of punishment ..... Confinement to the base, or a trial by Courts Martial (Yes, I spelled it correctly). He was hoping that Winters would take the confinement punishment, and not the trial. Winters threw a wrench into Sobel's plan, by demanding the trial instead. That's why Sobel had that "Holy Shit" look on his face, when he realized that Winters was calling his bluff ..... Only now, it was no longer a bluff. That salute Winters gave to Sobel, before leaving the room, was the biggest "F-you" that wasn't spoken.

From what I understand, Winters might have actually been at fault for not following exact army protocol but it should have been handled with a talk and maybe assignment of extra duties. Sobel tried to make it into a more serious charge that would leave a black mark on Winters
service record. Winters knew that the more serious charges would never fly so called the bluff. He also most likely knew Army politics well enough to understand that Sink would never let the matter actually go through.

Enjoy the series, it is epic. Look forward to enjoying to watching your journey with Band of Brothers. Also, in terms of the Court Martial, the NCO's were essentially performing a mutinee against their CO. That's a punishable offence by death. Seems extreme, but those soldiers were literally taking their life in their hands to protest against Captain Sobel.

Everybody should watch Band of Brothers, but it is a very personal journey. For some it’ll be just another miniseries, for some, if you get all of the messages it might just change how you feel about the other people we share this rock with. Take away national identity, crappy ideology and religion and at the end of the day we are all just people. Enjoy.

Many of the actors portraying Easy Company are British. They perfected their American accents brilliantly.

If you're going all the way with this...be prepared to grow, laugh, learn and suffer with these characters. The first episode is in some ways my favorite, if only for the innocence and the fact that I know what lies ahead for these men. This was when their biggest threats were "Army noodles with ketchup." I love the power move Winters makes by literally grabbing the pen out of Sobel's hand while he was abusing his power...it's brilliant, and a true story. Hard to call this a TV show honestly, it's a 12 hour Saving Private Ryan in quality...CURRAHEE! ♠

Adjusted for inflation, US$100 in 1942 is equivalent to almost $2000 in today’s economy.
