BIG WING PRESSURE 💪🏻 😲 JAL 777 APPROACHES LAX IN HIGH HUMIDITY FOG

During our last visit to LAX, high humidity was causing unprecedented fog conditions. So much so that at times visibility, for us, was down to less than 200yds! When it cleared (enough) we had some great examples of wing condensation, especially with this JAL 777 landing on Rwy 24R.

Awesome @BIG JET TV...In Physics it is called Adiabatic Cooling. Low pressure on the upper wing surface allows volume expansion and cooling (loss of heat) of humid air which reduces temperature and thus condenses. The air has to 'Do Work' during the expansion and thus losses energy (Temperature). Volume is inversely proportional to Pressure.

It's also like that little cloud you get when you crack open a can of fizzy drink and the pressure suddenly drops. Also deodorant spray cloud formed by drop in pressure and why it feels cold on your skin. It's all the same process 'Adiabatic Cooling'

I'm sure you all remember PV = nRT, the "ideal gas law" Simplified: Pressure x Volume = Temperature. So if the volume stays the same, lowering the pressure will lower the temperature... just enough to get to the dew point =)

The weather was ideal. Humid air provided ideal conditions for this over a low pressure wing surface leading to adiabatic expansion and condensation. The conditions were perfect. And it's exactly why you don't always see this.
