Car review in a few | 2018 Suzuki Swift Sport - (not so) cheap thrills

- Remember when the Suzuki Swift Sport was a 13 grand hot hatch, basically? Well not now. Now it's £18,000, which means it's on the outskirts of some serious performance superminis, like the exceptional Ford Fiesta ST.
We'd still consider buying one though. Here's why...

Suzuki pommie land have added way too much greed to the markup. In NZ the manual ZC33S is NZ$1000 (GBP500) more than ZC32S. Including on road costs NZ$29200 GBP14450. Similar pricing in Oz. There may be a perfectly good reason why Suzuki pommie land are shafting you.
Definitely, for a Suzuki. It's not that I don't like them, but they are cheap and tinny, not £18k.
Unfortunately yes. You could get a V10 M5 for that money with half the 0-60 and twice the worry that something will go wrong and cost a fortune, but hey, life's short.
Suzuki are well built and reliable cars. Its not too expensive for troublefree motoring.

One thing worthy of mention is the fact these new swifts are less than 1000kg, very light for a car with good levels of equipment and it's that light weight that makes them such fun
Here in Belgium, with similar kit, the Fiesta ST (5-door) is over 2000 euro more expensive than the Swift Sport. So no, I don't think the Swift is too pricy. The problem, if you will, lies in the fact that Suzuki only offer a full-option version.
Interesting viewpoint. I'd argue that the regular non-sport versions of the Swift can be seen as the lower tier options of this car. We just recently purchased the new Swift Sport, and one of the big things to draw us towards it was the fact that you didn't need to play the game of "which option package and kit tier has what I want because inevitably something is missing or too expensive etc etc"

I love the new swift sport, the fact it weights under a ton is the icing on the cake for me!
As far as I'm concerned this is a much better proposition than the (heavier!) Up! Gti. I took an Up Gti for a test drive and was not hugely impressed with it.

Not too expensive because walk into your Suzuki dealer and will get a registered one with 200 miles on the clock for £15k! :-) Simples.
Love this car.
I'd prefer the simplicity of this to the horrible self combusting ecoboost..albeit less fun
I went to Sports Direct last week in my 20 year old LS400. I can't remember the last time I went to Wooworths, but it would have been a long time ago. I do however have a Suzuki motorbike.
its 975kg and has 140 horsepower. Why would you need more ?

You need more because 8.1sec isn't very impressive for a sport version.
It would have been great 20 years ago. Not now, especially not with the price asked.
This car needs another 20Hp to be a really worth it deal or it needs to drop the price.
@@SIPEROTH 8.1 sec is very conservative. I've seen in the 6's stock standard. I've also seen a few higher power/torque figures but that's potentially down to dyno calibration.
@@SIPEROTH Most testers say that Suzuki was too conservative with the stats. In reality it makes 0 to 60 mph in 7,4 sec with the manual transmission and even less with the automatic!

They are pretty much the same price as the old model in NZ so you are being ripped off in the UK
Everything is a rip off in UK. My phone is £50 more expensive in the UK compared to any other country. Sucks :P
The Swift Sport is the thinking man's childish "been on the counter for 40 minutes in Greggs" hatch, people who drive Fiesta STs are the NPCs of the world. Also thank you for stealing clips of naff acoustic covers channels Mark, nice touch.
I had a 2014 Swift Sport, it was crap. It was cheap because it was cheap. It was seriously under powered, frustrating as the chassis could have shone with more power.
£16,999 before dealer discount now....
Suzuki is a good honest brand with a great reliability record. But for the money I'd rather get a 2016 fiesta ST
You could probably get a 2017 for that money...
I got the Swift 1.0 Turbo Hybrid instead of the Sport after test driving both. It has got that connected-feeling you talked about as well, is cheaper and I recon it handles even better since the engine in the front is only a 3-cylinder and therefore lighter.
About driving on the motorway: Are you shure you didn't forget to put it in 6th gear?
Putting the price aside, a 4-star NCAP rating would be a dealbreaker for me. Especially when other small cars has 5 star as a no-brainer.
More likely due to pedestrian safety rather than occupant so would mind.
4K more than a Up GTI and less fun to drive ( according to auto journalists) so I say it’s too expensive and I’m a big fan of Suzuki swifts. I loved the old 5 speed version having done many laps around the Ring in a rented one.
depends on where the journalists came from. especially in germany they tend to prefer german models. of course. no matter if they are objectively better.

I think it is a little expensive...i may be good fun to drive but that doesn't justify that price tag. Personally i would go for Seat Ibiza FR.
Wish we could get Seat here in Australia.
