I figure he dropped according to their plan on that stage and was supposed to take it easy till the finish, but then he saw Kelderman also dropped just in front of him, which was probably not part of the plan, and he decided to get back to work. Strong performance yes, but even more so shows that all the media gossip about him being unhappy in the team about them not gettting him a stage win, being a selfish rider, etc., is all bullshit, he is a top professional and a team player when it comes down to the wire.
i think this year with the possibility of him leaving early and then getting unlucky on the first sprints they decided green is not an option and maybe dont overuse him
He probably dropped because they were going hard on the steep section and him being 15 kilos heavier hurts him in there. But then the gradient lowered so he managed to come back
@@Euu_-tc6hz Yeah, I think Majka actually attacked to eliminate WVA before the gradient eased - and it worked. But then Sepp radio'd back and said that Majka's pace had eased (typical Majka), so WVA came storming back to set the pace through the lower gradient section in the middle - which was the original plan - and which WVA did to perfection. Turned the tables completely on Majka & UAE.
@@itachi7243456 for vingegaard it is best the peloton rides at a constant high speed, for pogocar it is best that they ride 'with rushes'. here yates from pogacars team gives an accelaration so van aert and kelderman got dropped, then yates was gonna slow down but van aert comes back to keep the constant pace cause he knew they were gonna slow down.
@@itachi7243456 The draft effect is central to cycling tactics. These guys climb fast enough to draft up to about an 8-9% grade. The best climbers can change their speed from fast to really fast without blowing up. Weaker climbers that are already on the limit can't handle those speed changes. WvA goes to the front for one last hard pull, increasing the pace so much that he drops pure climbers and sheds the domestiques. He is, the best overall rider in the world right now and on paper at least, shouldn't be able to do that. But WvA sets a new paradigm for a super domestique.
@@itachi7243456 Cycling is also highly psychological. When Kelderman and WVA get dropped, UAE thinks they are forcing their will (& pace) of Jumbo. WVA comes back to the front and reasserts his/Jumbo's dominance. When the riders are each hurting themselves so much, this little psychological warfare can be quite decisive.
His recovery is extreme, probably from cyclocross his whole life which is basicly 1 hour of high intensity intervals (you see the same on riders like MvDP and Pidcock). Add the sheer horsepower he puts out and this is the result.
Watched it in a bar, was shouting like a mad man. The plan is for yates to set the slow down the pace at the front, and change Vindegaard's pacing if Pogacar plans to attack. In cycling a change in pace can severely affect the momentum of a rider, and it takes a lot of energy to match the pace of a sudden attack. Wout saw Kelderman got dropped, and sepp cannot attack pass yates, he took the matter to himself. This is one legendary moment.
So glad I read this comment. I've only been watching pro cycling for about 1.5 years and I knew this was amazing, but now it's 10x more amazing. I didn't take into account the Yates slowing down for an attack situation. Mind blowing!
@@DualRaum easier said then done. Riders knows this. Sepp wouldn't have the power, and Vindegaard would have nothing left in the tank to counter pogacars attack.
When Wout takes over, forget the look of Majka! Look at the face of Pogacar. It is one of pure desperation. He still tries to cool himself with water. A little while later he has to let go while Wout is still pulling.

It's either his training program is amazing or its something else but in the past you've heard people and commentators saying amazing things about certain individuals and then years later the truth came out!
Honestly what does this help, it looks good for the cameras but doesn't give Vingegaard an advantage over Pogacar. They are both following the same train, be it UAE or Jumbo.
A few ways - Firstly Vingegaard and TJV is outnumbered, which is not good, in case of a mechanical, you need somebody to go to the team car, or something like that. Secondly Majka is riding the pace Pogacar wants, Vingegaard might have liked a different pace. Thirdly it ends up dropping Majka as far as I remember, which means it evens out the numbers, and it just helps out psychologically, it sends a message that if he can come back and drop Majka, Vingegaard and TJV expected a higher pace than UAE was willing to set, which could make Pogacar question if an attack is a good idea, does Vingegaard feel like they are just chilling? Could they have achieved this with Kuss, yes, but then you run the risk of being 3 against 1 instead, and WvA just steaming past like that on a climb, would probably have had a much bigger psychological effect.
He drops majka which leaves pogacar isolated, the worst thing you wanna see happening is being isolated without teammates. say pogacar can attack at very fast speeds and vingegaard having a domestique can make him chase, not doing the same effort as tadej as hes getting the draft from his domestique.
WvA will never be a GC rider in the Grand Tours, unless he can figure out a way of dropping something like 8 kilos or more. He has got great stamina, and is a terrific all rounder, but he is no where close to keeping up with the likes of Vingegaard, Pogacar, Evenepoel, etc., in the high mountains over 3 weeks. The way he is achieving these performances is by either being way out front earlier in the stages, and/or basically having his finish line 5-10 kilometers before the GC favourites, so he can go all out and have a big impact, before the actual finish line.
