Homemade Mini Livewell for a Kayak

- I had to remake my live well because I didn't have the cap screwed on tight and lost the bottom in the water somewhere. So, I figured that I'd document the making of the thing this time. It really does a bang up job keeping your shrimp or little fishes alive. And it's so small, it is great for a kayak with limited space.
I love your fishing videos they are so peaceful. I can't wait to try my hand at making this bait well, thank you for your time and expertise. You have a new fan.

Thanks for the great video Marty. I just made one of these and I used a soldering iron to make the holes. It had a point like a nail and once it reached the appropriate heat I just kept making holes with out having to stop.

Just be really careful heating it up in the microwave. I heated mine for 4 minutes as I went to get the supplies I needed to finish it and came back to a microwave full of water and melted container. Love you work man. I gotta say Zoffinger you inspired me to find a kayak for a cheap price and do all the work myself

I often use goo gone to take labels off. I have a bait container I bought at the bait store that can be rope to my yak it doesnt have the amount of holes yours does...Perhaps that is why I have so much bait die? the Death toll really rises on warmer days. Thanks for another great video !

After finishing the patch, you Could spray some Gutter Sealer liquid plastic, or FLex seal, or possibly even liquid Electrical tape. My choice would be sealall spray plumbing sealer.. several thick coats, naybe even use the Whole Can!, could be sprayed both inside and out. It use to be an Excellent speaker for just about Anything! And.. Ace Hardware, use to Carry this white Epoxy, in a square box, that people had used on Everything! The display pc you could look at and hold, was like a chunk of Plastic, with a bolt, a screw, a pc of fiberglass, a pc of acrylic, a pc of pc pipe, a pc of plexiglass, ect. All of it securely held in it. Hope this helps if you need it, ever! Better than the 2 part epoxy putty that's nade for even under water application. Sometimes the trick is to open the break just a little, and apply it to both inside and out.. by pushing it all the way Through the opening you have created and flattened on both inside and out. As well as rounding the ends of the split, so as to Stop it from continuing to try to split, by using a small drill bit through the ends of the Crack, as well as then / or using a heated rod tob MELT the round opening to thicken and eliminate the cracked ends, then secure with the putty, or Plastic weld. Then spray sealer. Good luck my man! 👍🤙

I did something like this for a minnow trap i made..instead of the torch, nail, and vise grips..you can use a soldering iron to melt the holes
I actually did try a soldering iron first. It wasn't nearly hot enough.
I use a hair dryer to removes stickers, usually gets all the glue too if you go slow enough

It's been working pretty good without it in the meantime. Even with the warm water.
A small soldering iron or wood burning iron would work as well ... I think.

I made one similar to this and used a drill. It worked pretty good and was fast
Soak in oxi clean for a few minutes. Way easier. Try it !!! I make beer and get my labels off of the old bottles that way......

Maybe you could put a bungee through the lid that would go all the way through the bottom of the plastic jar, with enough slack that you can remove the lid. Point being if the jar twists around while you paddle the lid might come loose again however this time all you loose is the bait.
To keep from losing the bucket, I put a little ring of foam along the inside so it'll float. Saved it from sinking twice!

A soldering iron with a fine pointed tip might work faster for you and save you propane. Thanks for sharing your video, was very helpful.
Use a blo dryer! It works great!
Never use stringers in salt water. I had a seal take three bonito from the stringer under my skiff in Redondo Harbor. I never felt a thing, but got suspicious when. The seal surfaced right next to my boat. Even the heads were gone - no trace of fish. In Florida you have Dolphins, Sharks. Same issue.

I normally use larger bait than what you are using. Do you think that this same style would work if I used a bucket with say a large pretzel jar in it? would a small bubbler still be powerful enough to keep my bait alive? Thanks for the videos they are really helpful and interesting!
have you tried using a soldering iron to put the holes in? seems like it might be easier, but not sure if it will get hot enough

Cool idea, but I find it funny that you took all that time to paint the outer container complete with cute little stencils but didn't bother to cut the top straight. It looks like you hacked at it with a butter knife. Also... next time, use a little "Goo Gone" to take off the sticky residue after the label comes off. It's like magic.

I love your videos. You have excellent craftsmanship as well...the wooden Tikis are really cool also... I am guessing you carved those. I have thoroughly enjoyed looking at all of your updates to your kayak. I have a few questions for you: What size and type of screws are you using to mount accessories to your kayak - particularly the mounting straps for your PVC rigging? Also, are you coating the screws with silicone before screwing them in or just putting silicone around the screw after it is fitted?

Not bad, great for the use for which you put it. But one thing, I imagine when you burn through the plastic with the nail that it leaves a lot of sharp plastic edges on the inside... did you sand those down or just leave them? I am betting the bait will live longer if they are not impaled ;)

try poking the holes from the inside to out side i found that this help reduce damage to bait fish that are mush harder to keep alive. the indent ted to scratch up there faces and eyes essentially stressing the bait and possibly killing them

Great videos!! Any ideas how to keep fishes on ice after a catch in a kayak? I don't like stringers they die to quick and hate the banging sound on the side of the yak. Any tips or advice would be great! I just subbed and staying tune for more!
PNW OutdoorChannel Those triangular insulated bags that go on the front of kayaks are probably the best alternative to big, clumsy coolers.
PNW OutdoorChannel old post - but I use the cool/hot insulated bags that you can find at grocery stores for less than $1. They fold up small, and hold big fish well. And they keep them cool. I transfer them to a cooler in my car with ice for the drive home if I'm far out.

It's hard to be so precise with a drill bit on such flimsy plastic. The bit tends to walk around before it penetrates and there is the possibility of it breaking the container as it pops through every time. A hot nail just makes the job easier, I think. Thanks for watching, and writing, Nate.
zoffinger I did exacty like you except that I used a Simply Orange juice bottle and used a drill. The Simply Orange bottle seemed to be sturdy enough to use a drill. The plus of the nail is it is much quieter but the drill is much faster.

great tip for so you don't loose lid , put hole in middle of lid and than put a string or thin rope through lid and bottom middle hole, now you can easily twist as usual and lid will never come apart from bottom :) the string must be twice the length of container itself :)
