This isn't always true. I have a friend this happened to and it is very VERY sad. I also have three friends who left such groups and still are in contact with their families and old friends. And two who left for a while and then returned to marry on the group because they saw something they liked in it. Any group then excommunicated people, I call a cult. Not all of these groups do that though and lumping them all together is telling a half truth.
