  • Rogel Aguilera-Mederos was 23 when his semi-truck slammed into stopped traffic on the interstate near Denver West Parkway on April 25, 2019. Four people died instantly from the impact: Doyle Harrison, William Bailey, Miguel Angel Lamas Arellano and Stanley Politano. It is believed they all died from injuries and not the resulting fire.
Aguilera-Mederos was found guilty by a jury on 27 counts in total. The most serious charges were four counts of vehicular manslaughter. Other counts he was found guilty of included first-degree assault, first-degree attempt to commit assault, vehicular assault, reckless driving and careless driving.

This man is a murderer through his own criminal negligence. The deaths he caused could have been prevented, and he had ample time to take appropriate action to not kill people. He had 4 opportunities over several miles to take an exit ramp. He could have left his truck in gear and downshifted instead of putting it in neutral to accelerate downhill uncontrolled. His collision wasn’t a split second accident. It was criminal negligence and disregard for everyone else’s safety. It wasn’t a heat of the moment split second decision. It was a series of decisions he made over several minutes to disregard his training and all safety concerns. The man is a murderer, and deserves to die in jail. The trucking company deserves to be held liable for allowing someone as unsafe as him on the road, but they didn’t force him to make several bad decisions over a 5 minute period that ended up killing 4, hospitalizing 80, and leaving 16 with life changing injuries that they can never recover from.

Yes, because as a driver he is responsible for the safe operation of the vehicle. If there were brake problems, he should have seen it on a pretrip inspection, and took the truck out of service. Barring that, he should’ve monitored the brakes for proper operation while driving, and if they failed, it was his responsibility to take that truck off the road immediately, be it at a runaway ramp or simply putting it in a ditch.

@@chadvargo7822 but that's not his job, he is not a mechanic or an inspector he is a truck driver, driving for another company, driving a truck he does not own. The trucking company should have done that. This guy is not responsible for the upkeep of a company vehicle. Sorry dude you got this one wrong. It's a heartbreaking situation for everyone involved, but the company he worked for filed for bankruptcy and isn't being held a tad responsible. The system is broken.
With that being said, he got out of the truck and checked the brakes, to his knowledge (remember he is not a mechanic) he decided the breaks were fine. The breaks on the truck completely broke afterwards and completely stopped working. Obviously the company did not want to pony up the maintenance cost on maintaining their trucks, and this is what happens when a company cuts corners.

He lied about his experience to get the job, failed to properly inspect his brakes, overused his breaks and caused them to overheat and wear out that day, and failed to use the run away ramps when he knew he had lost control. Lastly, he intentionally chose to steer into backed up traffic, knowing many would die because his truck would plow right through them, rather than turning off the road or into larger trucks like the one he was driving, because that would risk his own life. We have people who intentionally rape and kill. My heart goes out to the families who lost loved ones, my heart goes out to this man and his loved ones as well. Revoke his CDL, community service and A PART (not all, he still has to live) of any earnings goes to the family for however long deemed necessary… Its real criminals out there that are doing terrible things. I’m sure the world would be a much better place if the people within the system geared the effort into putting the actual bad guys in prison instead of someone who needs rehabilitation.

Kid shoots up a school killing multiple children, child murderers, rapists, ect don't even get this severe of a sentence! This man clearly is hurting and has to live the rest of his life knowing he took 4 lives. Has remorse and is begging for forgiveness. This was an accident that could happen to anyone! My husband has worked on 18 wheelers for over 20 years, his dad, Grandfather and brother were truck drivers and mechanics too. They all have horror stories they either witnessed or heard about. I will just say too many related to faulty equipment or parts.
This man is in the USA legally with a green cars to find work and support his family. No drugs, alcohol or even any criminal background. The company he was driving for has multiple issues related to faulty breaks and Yet the driver is gonna die in prison. He doesn't own the truck, he doesn't do any repairs or maintenance on the truck. He only drives it. So if this judge got a rental car and it suddenly lost its breaks while he was going 70mph and he crashed, wouldn't the judge blame the car rental company. Or if you take a flight and the plane loses its engine's, do you Blame the pilot?

Making you impulsive, still believing your invincible. He is still a kid! All these experienced truckers saying he should have done this or he should have done that…he’s a kid. He panicked. I’ve been in the medical field for 30 years. I’ve seen new nurses in their early 20’s do it all the time. Only difference is they have back up. I’ve seen residents do it but they have back up. Do mistakes happen, sometimes. But we do not get sentenced to 110 years for them. And yes those mistakes on occasion have led to a death. People talking about murderers don’t get as much time, yeah right, try killing 4 people and see if you don’t get life.. This is not right. Yes he didn’t go through the truck lane like he should have but think about the reasons as to why he didn’t take it. With the pandemic he was probably forced to drive extra fast and tight on deadlines. And yes I agree there’s negligence involved but he did not intent to kill those 4 people. This man right here you can see it in him that he just wants to progress in life and not intend to be a bad person. Sentence should be a fraction of that.

Homicide is murder without intent which this most definitely was. If he wasn't trying to hurt people he would have used any of the 4 ramps or green patches/ditches that presented themselves. He knowingly and willingly drove into stopped traffic. This was NOT an accident.

@@1611AuthorizedVersion you might want to get your terms correct first of all, homicide is a deliberate killing of another which is NOT what he did, i believe what you meant was manslaughter. second, put yourself in his shoes and think about the adrenaline running through your body, the fear you would have trying to stop a multi ton vehicle. third, he was not trained properly by his company meaning his company should have also been held accountable, he also may not be able to read english well and was more than likely not trained on the signs and what they mean, that is again his companies fault. he deserves to serve time but not 110 years, the judge and family members of the ones killed also agree with that.

The system isn't broken. This wasn't an accident. He purposely drove into stopped traffic. He had options and made his decision. His job was literally to be safe. His sentence was fair. 1st degree Murder is intent, planned out, premeditated which is very difficult to prove in a trial hence why we have HOMICIDE which is murder without intent which this definitely was. Turn down the emotions and turn up the fact checking. He was was originally charged on 40 counts or 40 crimes if you will. Well it changed to 27 and each one carries a penalty of jail time homicide and assault are serious offenses and those carry a minimum, which the judge did. I think he should have gotten the maximum for taking it to trial instead of owning up to his mistakes but liberal democratic judges am I right ?

Our justice system is broken in the worst way. Murderers and other violent criminals walk away with unlimited chances after committing crime after crime but this man gets 110 YEARS? How exactly is that justice? Does it ease the families' pain to know this man's life is over in his 20's? Just disgusting!

I am so sorry for all, and never have I seen a person remember the names of those he killed, by accident b/c he wasn't trained correctly by a company who was suppose to look out for him and others. The remorse this man has... OMG this is terrible.. I can see he's very sorry for all that happened. Nothing will bring back those that lost their lives, this is just another life lost... Being on the road Trucking with my daughter, I witnessed MANY foreign drivers who didn't seem trained enough, who didn't speak English. THAT needs to change not b/c I'm NOT BEING racist but because our road signs are in English, Truckers have many signs that us "regular drivers" can't read that are on bridges and on the side of a road so many that we don't see b/c they don't affect us or tell us regular drivers what's what or what lane to drive in.. His company should have gotten this sentence, I am not mad at the driver I am mad even angry at his company for sending them out there w/out proper training.. You can't send these New drivers out on Mountain Roads w/out proper training!!
