Mirror segments get shiny | ELT Updates

- The first of the ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT)’s primary mirror segments have been given a shiny new coating.
Each 1.5 metre segment is coated with just 1.7 grams of highly reflective silver, as well as adhesive and protective layers. Precise sensors are installed to detect misalignments on a nanometer scale once the telescope is fully built. Out of the 798 total segments that will be used to form the telescope, two will be recoated every day to ensure every segment maintains the best reflectivity.

Incrível...os atomos são uns derradeiros "tijolos" ...ao falar de átomo penso que se o átomo tivesse as dimensões de um estádio, o núcleo seria do tamanho de uma joaninha colocada no centro do campo...aqui átomo por átomo, o que estará no centro deste fenomenal e brilhantismo espelho!! A obra nasceu e está a crescer...para nos surpreender!!
While shipping these segments to final assembly.. what problems do you face. Generally and how do you tackle them?
Shipping is very delicate. We use special boxes that not only protect the segments but also contain data loggers that keep track of temperature, humidity and vibrations throughout the trip. That way we have a timestamped history of everything that happened.
How long does the process take for each segment?
About 2 hours.
Also how much error is permissible in the alignment of these sensors ?
Nanometers!

Hi! The uncoated mirror segments are manufactured in Europe and then shipped to Chile. The coating is performed at the ELT Technical Facility at our Paranal Observatory, just a few km away from the ELT itself.
