  • Day 415 - Today we're exploring a magical island monastery in Normandy, France known as Mont Saint-Michel. This is seriously one of the most beautiful places we've ever seen 😍 Every day the tide comes in and surrounds this island church with water. It's like a castle straight out of a fairytale 🏰

If any of you are keen on leaving modern society (It's obviously not to everyone's liking), then help me build a city at some sort of island or coastline. It will be based on something right out of the early 18th century, and there will only be "pre-industrial age" technology used. The town is to be built, inspired by Nassau or some other colony in the 18th century Bahamas. Sadly, islands and acreage cost a lot of money, but if we are many, and we all sell our properties, it should be easy to afford the island/land and resources needed. I really don't think it should be a problem to sell your property and unnecessary belongings, if you are planning to leave modern society anyways. A couple of islands I have in mind are, Matana South seas plantation, Igoigoli Island and Whitsunday Island. There are also some coastal areas that can be used. Maybe something along the coast of New Guinea. In New Guinea one can find coastal stretches that are up to 50 km long without any named location showing up on google earth (they show the name of practically everything on google earth) Too be honest coastal areas are likely more viable solutions than small islands. Acreage bought off the mainland is also way cheaper than an island of the same size.
Remember that if one person gets a couple followers those followers might also get some, and then we have a chain reaction. This is possible guys. If you are interested, then like my comment so other people can see that you are interested. Contact me on email: emiladefoged@gmail.com

I came to the blog (vlog?) at the "food in the Lake District" episode and was hooked. So I started at the beginning and am working my way through. This is *the best* episode yet. The drone footage is stunning. You take us to places we are unlikely to visit ourselves (though I have been to Le Havre and the Normandy beaches) and, amazingly, make us feel part of the adventure as if we were there with you. I'm totally impressed with your stamina and the distances you travel on foot whether up and down hills or on the level. I doubt I could have done it when I was your age. I wince when I see the packs you carry, especially little Allison whose ready smile warms the heart. Thank you.

I once visited this beautiful place, having never heard of it. I found myself at this incredible location due to a series of events that took place during the month of June, 1983.
A friend and I had recently celebrated our 18th birthdays, and we booked a camping holiday near to the French, Brittany town of Cancale.
The day of departure from BIRMINGHAM coach station, saw us aboard a double decker coach. We sat aloft. On the journey out of the city, a housing estate captured my interest. The estate lay to the right of the motorway, I saw a working manÂŽs club, petrol station, small shopping precinct and a large secondary school perched on the hill overlooking the estate. I also noticed particular homes and their neat front gardens.
We arrived at the camp site, located on the outskirts of Cancale. We soon discover that there was a group of school girls on an end of term cultural trip, also at the camp site. They told us they were from Hodge Hill Girls School, Hodge Hill, BIRMINGHAM. They had arrived in two mini vans, so I guess there may have been approximately 20 in their party.
The girls were aged 15 and 16. Instincts kicked in, and so did the only game in town.
My friend and I somehow got invited by the teachers, to accompany them all on a day trip. We must have appeared to be reasonably safe and respectable. We travelled at the very rear of one of the decrepit mini buses in a couple of spare seats. We had no idea at this point where we were heading. We supplied the teachers with Tape Cassettes, and were soon travelling through French country side listening music of the band of the day “Japan”.
We eventually arrived at Mont San Michel, and we began our pilgrimage against gravity. We slowly meandered up through the cobbled streets, taking in nearly all of the gift shops, until we eventually arrived at the summit, in the company of our new friends. Lunch time came around, and we all ate in the grounds immediate to the Abbey. The views was spectacular. The company was very lovely and 1983 school girl esc.
I can still visualize where we sat to eat, and with whom we sat. I sensed that something very synchronistic was taking place.
The holiday ended, and my friend and I returned home. Part two of this story commenced after receiving a phone call, from one of those delightful young ladies. I would later learn that the housing estate that had caught my attention was home to most of the girls and the secondary school on the hill was their school.

Did you guys know that there is a similar site in Cornwall, SW UK called St Michael's Mount? It's not quite the same, but the sea does surround it at high tide.

When you had mentioned Normandy I was about to mention Mont San Michel but I checked on goole maps and it looked like 2hour drive. This was no five on my bucket list since when I was a kid and fantasized to travel around reading the National Geographic. Cheers for the post as always.

I believe Mont Saint-Michel (MSM) becomes a proper island fully surrounded by water for only a few hours on certain days during the year. Other than these few hours, you are still able to walk on the bridge to/from MSM even in high tide.

Burial site of Duke Conan I of Brittany, who died 992 defending against an attack by his wife’s brother, Fulk Nerra, Count of Anjou.
Conan’s descendants include William the Conqueror, William’s greatest knight Count Alan Rufus, and several of William’s greatest rivals.

And then William the Conqueror went here with his troops for a final blessing before launching off from around Barfleur to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. This place has so much history! We touch a bit on it in our video and what it means to the French people in "5 Tips for Visiting Normandy" if you're interested :)

lordgunner TGSTEL: more than that, the designer of the Bayeux Tapestry was Scolland, the treasurer and chief illuminator from Mont St Michel, whereas the first Earl of Cornwall was Brian of Brittany, brother to Alan Rufus who seems to have been a friend of Scolland’s: Alan Rufus appears in most of the Bayeux Tapestry. Alan was also William the Conqueror’s palace guard captain and a hero celebrated by 12th century poets.

Well, in the 16th century it was still in construction, it was often attacked and had several massive fire so... not the best place to live in. And it didn't get better, in 1615 the abbé (the religious who rules the abbaye) was only 5 years old, not the best to defend it and then it became a prison for a while so..
