    What you will learn:
    Is this different than other pedals?
    What was the cost of the device?
    Does this work with any amp?
    How does this sound?
    Can anyone use this effects unit?
    Does it 'Djent'?
    The Mooer Ocean Machine might be one of those devices that you see and then go out and buy it. That's 'OK' BUT (there usually is one). You're no Devin Townsend (and neither am I) and you wind up with the Ocean Machine and wonder what on earth you might do with it. Oh you're a 'Djent' fiend? Hmmm might be a problem... You're the next (put whatever name you want here) guitarist - well even you might have a problem...
    You see, the Mooer Ocean Machine is no simple pedal and that's a fact. But in it's own way, this very specialized pedal is possibly one of the best effects units you can buy and it could conceivably change how you write music forever. You don't have to play a guitar to use it! It might work very well on so many other things - even vocals.
    So what is this thing? Its an effects unit, but it loves ambience of tones and atmospheric parts of music that many can't really envisage. This unit will expand your mind and you WILL HEAR things that you claimed that you could never write, and create (with work!) those ambient tones that before were out of reach.
    Its not a pedal for everyone - I take you through the inside and out reviews that I am known for - and I discuss the Air pedal and other features and the many benefits of this pedal. Lastly I 'play' some examples of the presets in the unit... now then, play is a funny word because I don't come from this style of music... but I reckon with a bit of practice I could write serious ambient and atmospheric tones and breaks in the rock music I usually play.
    I do cover most stuff one way or another and if you are considering buying one of these devices then this video will open your eyes to the complexity and overall features and benefits of what exactly it is you will be buying.
    This video is self funded, written & developed by me and is not sponsored by ANY company. I purchased everything. I hope this video inspires you too to consider other things like this ocean machine.

    Thank you so much for this, Tony. I will receive mine tomorrow, want to use it hooked up with a synth for doing some live performance jams and stuff. Listening to DT for about 20 years now, with some breaks, and i have all his albums, even the older heavy SYL ones, which are really not for everyone. Its amazing how he developed and still stays true to this own kind of style going. I was able to see him two times live, one in a full band set, and the other one was this really lovely solo - "an evening with Devin Townsend" kind of private solo gig thing. Was like i was falling love with him, again . Really. He is so funny, charming, a smart guy and true to the heart. If you haven't checked out some of his stuff yet, i highly recommend you to do so. There are a few really "less wall of sound " like ambient ones around , you might really enjoy (or even maybe the more melodic heavy sound ones, who knows). Loved that smile you showed us during your performance around 50:25. :) And what you did play at the end was really dope - and i think you actually enjoyed doing ambiance. Much love. Yours, SF

      Any time. I'm not a player of this style of stuff, but the unit really is brilliant. Ha I was the dope in the playing section for sure :) I watched Devin on the MOOER site and that's a bit of a great insight in to how he does it all. I really appreciate that style its quite incredible. I do intend to start with this unit after the completion of the studio work going on right now and integrating that unit in to the studio. Then I guess I'll create parts for it :) I don't really know of another pedal like that and they did such an amazing job for very little money really. In any case - I really like to hear from guys that like the subject matter and hopefully gain somehow from the video - that is why I make them. I'm certainly no tutor, but I really do try and show the stuff in ways that others never do. Thanks for watching too.

    Your usual thorough review of a pedal that no one else gets close to. I have this pedal and it is certainly very deep in terms of what is possible to extract from it. If you are not up to the complex stuff it is still well worth it just for the basic delay and reverb presets. I agree with review re the excellent build quality although one of the knobs on mine became detached. Some super glue solved that problem.

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  Před 2 lety

      It is a great pedal and also made well. It's particularly good value for the cost price I think. I agree with you on this pedal - while I'm not really expert at the playing with it, it also does work like a regular reverb, delay etc. and can be if you want it to be very powerful. Super glue! Ha that can fix many things... especially guitar related :). Thanks for watching and I don't regret buying this unit - still have it in fact.

  • @aipsong
    @aipsong Před 3 lety +1

    Nice review - as always! I don't have that pedal, but I use the Strymon TimeLine, and I usually just start by searching existing presets until I get something that clicks. Then I use the tap tempo, and limit the number of repeats and lower the wet/dry ratio. In the heat of recording, it is easy to think the sound is spot on, but later, in the mix, there may be regrets. A safety measure would be to use a good DI box to get the direct signal from the guitar in case the effects were too invasive. Keep the reviews coming - we appreciate them.

      I waited 2 weeks for my delivery but I've had the Ocean Machine 5 or 6 days now. It's a really good device! A really good addition to my rig.
      I love being able to feed each the delays into each other by changing the order of the chain in real time. You can get all sorts of weird and wonderful sounds from it. Great for creating sound between songs in a set!
      The Air Switch is a weird one. I only find a use for setting tap tempo's or bypassing the Ocean Machine. Maybe the settings have been changed in firmware updates, but I don't have a midi to USB cable to check that at this moment in time. I was hoping it would possibly control the looper but it can't. Or at least give an option to assign the switches to control different things in the Ocean Machine.
      Overall, I like it though and have no complaints so far. A solid little unit! :)

      @@tonymckenziecom I’m never up to date on anything anymore. I just use a few now. New band is requiring blowing the dust off some.
      However, I did acquire a Keeley dark side. It’s a delay, rotary and fuzz.
      What I don’t like is there are a few assignable knobs and once one finds the sweet spot, one tiny nudge and it’s out.
      The multi FX deals, I just don’t dig as it’s always, too many knobs on stage.

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  Před 2 lety

      Ha I found 'too many knobs' in some of my bands :) but seriously, I know what you mean about all of that. When you're at a gig the last thing you need is that your sound walked out the door because something got knocked in some way - and that's the exact same issue re simulators too. You know I'm old fashioned and generally a delay, reverb and wah is it for me. I have not checked the 'dark side' pedal out. I always tended to keep things simple and that way there is far less that could go wrong. Ha the only real time I ever had major aggro (believe this it's true) was in a recording studio. We put down about three tracks and then the bass guy broke a string! Yes he did! But the worst was to come - because he had no spare... he ended up going home to get a string (I think it was a Sunday!) but I did get that sinking feeling at the time watching the studio time floating out of the window and we were all paying for it. :)

    • @Thomasdgolden
      @Thomasdgolden Před 2 lety +1

      @@tonymckenziecom Amen to that situation. I learned the hard way about the stomps. I use rubber washers now. I grabbed a bunch of different sizes and use them on any device with suspect “potential” knob issues.
      Gotta do the Keeley pedal next. At low volumes they all sound great.
      Then you get to rehearsal and it sounds like a Welsh man without sheep.
      (Just kidding).

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  Před 2 lety

      Good idea on the washers. I'll look around at the Keeley dark side and if I find one I'll blame you :) (joking of course). Ha I worked in Wales for about 3 years at the end of the 70's. I can agree that without the sheep there is a difference... that would have been me back then trying to hide among the Welsh guys but ultimately they knew I was not 'one of them'. :) I could tell some stories but might get banned ... but those were interesting times I had... I lived in a little village called 'Bryn Y Baal' near to 'Mold' northern Wales. Nice place...

    I play mainly ambient guitar so have a lot of pedals. The Ocean Machine is a remarkable bargain. I got mine for £150 new. I could barely get a decent branded reverb pedal for that. Having used a plethora of delay and reverb pedals in all patching configurations, the Ocean Machine is the easiest pedal I've used to create ambient pads. The reverb hold function is pretty much all that is needed to create lush pads and soundscapes.
    Some of the reverbs and delays I doubt I will ever use but the fact that a £150 pedal provides me with more features than I will use is a real achievement from Mooer.

Just saw this and as advised seems problem re PSU overvolt? Heres what they said:
      tips for anyone fixing them:
      All can be checked without the control board attached, just the main board and power supply.
      1. check if the power supply has juice enough. Mine here had 9v 1A which is way above needed. check polarity of said PS.
      2. Check voltages on WRA1209 for 9v and -9v
      3. check voltages on the 117 for around 5v. It should receive around 9v and output around 5v.
      4. Before installing a new CS4272, without it installed measure 117 for the 5v needed. I burned one because of a bad new 117.
      5. when changing CS4272 use alluminum tape or capton to protect the plastic stuff, specially the white relays, mine got a little "deformed". lol
      tools needed:
      - hot air station
      - flux
      - solder (duh)
      - a microscope does help to check if the joints are good.
      - thermal camera saved me a lot of time. the hottest component should be the WRA1209 with around 40-50 celsius.

    Devin Townsend played on That Pedal Show. He isn’t one of may favorites but he is a good guitar player.

      Well I guess music is subjective like everything else. What I liked is that the pedal had thought put behind it really and the price was great for this pedal. I can't really use it that much, but it can fit particular sections of music I think. Thanks for watching.

    LOL, I didn't know you could activate the delay and reverb Freeze features from the unit itself without MIDI control. It's explained in the manual, I just never noticed it. Thanks for reading the manual for me. I made a MIDI controller from an old Line6 Floorboard and it's really nice to use with the Ocean Machine. Demo here czcams.com/video/7LDePmXEfJw/video.html

      Ha... I have to read the manuals :) Problem is, there is so much stuff inside these things these days that they 'sneak in' features that I certainly would not discern without reading through it. Thanks for the link... I'll take a look and I'm sure others will too... and hey thanks for watching - this is a great device - I'm no master of it, but you have to go a long way to find a better device. Thanks.

      Hey Allan... good to see you. It is a very weird thing for sure and I suppose I could have spent hours on it... but not the best pedal for me... trust you're doing OK there.
