Last year I made a video comparing the iPhone 13 with the 13 Pro and asked the question: “Do you actually need the Pro?”. After comparing the phones side by side and highlighting all the differences, we reached the conclusion that for most people…the answer is “no”. It used to be the case that in order to get a ‘big' iPhone you had to pay extra for the Pro Max. But with Apple introducing a plus-sized iPhone 14, you can now get a big iPhone without the Pro price tag.
I’ve already made videos comparing all of the new 14 series phones with last year’s models. This video is going to compare the iPhone 14 Pro Max against the 14 Plus, and since the smaller versions of these phones are essentially the same, most of the comparisons will apply to those phones as well.
So let’s take a look at Apple’s latest iPhones and ask the question: “Do you need the Pro NOW?”.

I'm not very tech-savvy, so I appreciate this very thorough comparison of the 14 plus and 14 pro max. I like how you painstakingly included side-by-side video samples and demos of what you are discussing instead of just having us watch while you talked on the screen (like other reviews I watched). Thanks a bunch, this is a huge help since I'm trying to weigh which phone to get. I’m leaning toward the plus. I like that it's lightweight and the photos look great minus all the time-consuming editing. I probably do not need raw photos esp since they will take up a lot of space.

As a person who usually gets the pro max on every upgrade, I opted for the 14 plus this time and I am very satisfied. It's a lot lighter in weight than the pro max. The pro max just seems bulky and heavy. I honestly think its overrated after having one for years. If you aren't in tech or using your phone for filming etc there really isn't a major difference between the two ( plus + pro) I think people just opt for the pro max for ego gratification because it's really not that great. The plus has better aesthetic/colors also!!!
Yes - people get caught up in assuming they need the Pro Max, but actually the Plus is more than good enough for most people (better in some ways too)

For me personally, I got the pro max because the extra battery capacity means a lot to me and so do the other pro features. Ego had zero to do with my choice. The weight and size are perfect for me and glad I made my choice. No regrets. I do love that there are different choices for ppl who prefer something else
Been using iPhone 14 Plus for almost a month and I absolutely love it. No complaints there. The only thing I really wish 14 Plus had is a macro camera since you don't need a separate camera module for that! I love shooting macro photos. Apart from that there's nothing about iPhone 14 Plus that I don't like
You can get a decent clip-on Macro lens for as little as $15
@Dhanish Prathick It’s a 60 Hz panel and I’m absolutely fine with it. I would’ve loved to have 120 Hz refresh rate but I don’t see any problem with 60 Hz display. The display is big, beautiful, bright and colour accurate.
14 pro didn't get macro lens. it's a scam from apple. the third camera is optical zoom and there is no macro, they could add macro in 14 without lens, but they didn't.
use 0.9x for macro photos

i've bought the iPhone 14 and although at times I'm worried at i was "conned" or like bought the outlier, i've got to say i'm satisfied with it. i'm an average user, using iPhone for social media (browse tiktok insta etc), taking basic pics of me and my friends and don't care a lot about the best possible pic quality in the universe, and overall for just needing a phone for everyday life, I feel like the pro is just a bit too much. it's like buying an audi rs6 to commute to work at a 20mph average speed, it's just not worth it. so for me personally, i think the main question is "am i indeed a pro? do i need a phone that just does everyday tasks and that's it or do i need a super fast, state-of-the-art, 'pro' phone?" and depending on ur answer you've got your phone.
Don’t forget you have a state of the art, super fast phone too! For most things everyone will do, the 14 and 14 Pro are exactly as fast as each other. You said it perfectly, it meets all of your needs 👌🏼

meanwhile nice video, however my thoughts are the 14pro max is better the real turndown for me in the 14plus is apple using last year's chipset, 60hrzd refresh rate, and just two camera lenses, and not integrating the wizard magic on the screen of the 14plus the dynamic island. And just as you rightly said, in summary, with your words so many are addicted to the extreme features on phones big screen, better displays bigger batteries, etc as supposed to cutting corners.
I think apple does better on the pro phones than any of their mid-range phones follow up. well it will only boil down to the phrase different strokes for different folks that's what it will come down to in selection.
And on a lighter note, I haven't seen much of your "man's best friend" in your videos. I sure hope everything is fine I wish you a lovely new year.

Saw the 14 line up, and went for a slightly used secondhand 13 Pro Max, at around $800. Very similar to the 14 Pro Max except for the Dynamic Island and camera improvements. Very happy with the purchase because the 14 plus costs around $1200 USD here in the Philippines and the pro costs nearly $1500.

ive just upgraded from a second gen iphone SE. The screen was too small for my aging eyes and the battery life was starting to show. My wife already had the 14 pro, but i went for the 14 plus. She has a better camera, and a brighter screen, but nothing else really stood out as an advantage. Indeed a brighter screen can also be a negative for aging eyes and eye strain. Until Apple release a new SE with a bigger screen i think the 14 plus is the best buy for average users and i agree the standard 14 is a bit pointless.

This is actually a great phone for people with PWM sensitivity that can’t use the pro models because of the intense flickering. The iPhone 14 plus with reduce white point turned in in the setting above 50 percent and a privacy/matter screen protector make it very comfortable for the eyes because it’s a big phone without pro motion. The pro motion makes the flickering very intense on the pro models and can trigger a number of issues such as epileptic seizures, migraines, heart attacks, and dizziness for PWM sensitive people.

Got the iphone 14 plus on the way for $99 after trading in pixel 6a. I guess I couldn't stay away from apple. Took a 1 year run with the pixel and it wasn't everything I needed it to be definitely with media limits due to carriers.
iPhones are way better when sending media and music no limits like androids. I couldn't even send a audio file without it saying the file is too large.
Feels great to be back with Apple cant wait to game and create on my iphone 14 plus.

Just canceled my 14 pro max, and went with a plus, reading about many issues with the max, and that should be no surprise, having disgruntled workers assembling them, camera focus issues, battery issues, dynamic island issues, frame stuttering , to name a few.
I find the island stupid, and it looks even worse watching videos, horrible idea, no matter what marketing is saying, and marketing minions , it sucks.
Always on display is something I would turn off pronto. No need in that.
The 14 pro just has way too many real life issues, for many. And super long wait times,
Was well as issues in china with how employees are treated.
Hard pass on the pro for me.
The plus has a wait time of one day, the pro, well over a month.

You made a good choice! I just gave up my pro max for the plus. My pro max had a lot of issues in the two years I had it. It had software and hardware issues. It's a waste.,Didn't even last two years. I love my 14 plus!

This is my 5th video of 14 Pro Max vs 14 Plus. And even with that in mind, I still can’t decide 😂. They’re both great so far from what I’m seeing. But I’m definitely a heavy phone user and a gamer. So idk which one is the right one for me 🤔
I think the plus iPhone with USB type C is what some people are waiting for, especially those wanting to switch from Android.
What has caught my eye is how close the Geekbench scores from the A16 have gotten to those of the M2.

I am extremely tempted to trade in my 13 Pro for a 13 mini just because of size. I think it would be great to have a phone that you can operate with one hand. That is very important to me. Like you, I don't really use the fancy features of the Pro cameras. Your review is making it hard for me to stick with the Pro :)
If you're thinking about it, i'd say go for it! The mini probably isn't coming back (at least for a while) so now is a great time to try it out. It's extremely refreshing using a phone that small - nice to try something different!

Thanks for video! My difficult choice is between Plus and 14 Pro. I really appreciate macro and zoom without loss in quality. 120 Hz also looks nice. Nevertheless, I doubt I will often use Pro Raw, but who knows. :) The same is with Always On, I’m not sure of it. At the end of the day, I will probably turn it off, depending of battery issues. On the other hand, I like Plus long-lasting battery, low weight and cool big screen which is nice for content. I still have 8. What would you advise?
Either tbh. But maybe get the Plus since you have the 8. A massive upgrade and still leaves room to upgrade further if you feel you need it!

Honestly, anyone who isn't sure should go for the Plus. Since the battery life is so good, why pay more if you're not certain you want those extra features? You can't really go wrong either way, but that would be my suggestion!

I have decided to make some personal checking to understand my preferences. I compared phones myself and went 14 Pro. That camera is awesome and other Pro features are fine for me. I am glad I didn’t take Plus, but now it is clear for me I should take 14 Pro Max.)) So I missed a bit, but there is no drama, Max is still soo heavy, too much armwrestling for a petite woman. :) Maybe it will help someone, my choice would be Pro Max.
I have the iPhone 13 Pro Max and didn't really get a use out of the Pro features. I'm downgrading to the 14 Plus. It's all I need.
It's an upgrade in some areas too! Think of of it more a sensible switch as opposed to a downgrade 👌🏼
Great review. He actually did justice to the plus instead of bashing it because it’s not the pro. It’s so weird when reviewers do that. Also the pro max isn’t the better battery life because Apple runs their test with all the bells and whistles on both. Which would mean the plus is the better battery. In your test you took away everything the pro does. Most people won’t use the phone that way.

I had 11 used it for 2 years I got a new xr it was enough for me sold both of them and got 14 plus now. Frankly the pro max is a ripoff if u want a better camera just get a dslr which will last you for 10 years easily.

It's hard to say for sure - but if you're used to a 120 Hz display now I think you would notice the 14 Plus being slower. Get a Pro if you can, or buy from somewhere with a good return policy and just try the Plus first

currently on a 14 Pro Max 1TB space black still using the 13 Pro Max for work it’s not that much of a difference. so I’m guessing same goes for the 14 Plus but the 13 Pro Max would have been a better buy, not only cause of build material stainless steel versus aluminum and the fact that you get 120 Hz adaptable display.

Hello i got a question im thinking of buying the iphone 14+ but will the 14+ get a long software support ? because the iphone 13 pro has the same chip and the same ram or is it more likely that the 13 pro and the 14 base and + get just one more year then the iphone 13 ?
I expect they will get exactly the same number of years of support - Apple typically drops support for phones with the same A-chip at the same time

I’m coming from the iPhone XR. I really want a telephoto camera though but I hear the camera with digital zoom is really good though in the 13 pros and 14 and 14 plus. I can’t believe Apple hasn’t given a real telephoto lens like Samsung. I’d love to go the s23 or the pixel 7 pro but all my passwords and stuff is on apples keychain and ecosystem(2020 iPad Pro, MacBook Air, Apple TV)
The Pros all have telephoto lenses - so it sounds like the 13 Pro is the best option for you

The S22 Ultra is overall technically superior. But it depends on what you like in a smartphone and what you want it to do. Also your preference for iOS or Android is the biggest factor here!
@InsideTech thanks so much for your reply, the s22 ultra was lagging a bit here in the UK, I've since replaced it with the flip 4, which actually performs so much better, I'm more into android than ios, so stuck with android in the end 😀

So having had a 12 pro and now a 14 plus I miss the pro camera. But that’s the only thing. I love this bigger screen and this amazing battery life. Granted it’s still new and not fully broken in yet.

This is the choice I’m gonna make 12 pro to 14 plus. I think I might miss the telephoto but looking back through my photos I’m using the telephoto for maybe 10 photos a year and even then it’s only at 3X max.
So I don’t think I’ll miss it loads.

Honestly it’s quite similar - no substantial difference I would say. There is more difference between the 14 and 14 plus (or the pro and the pro max) because the bigger phones tend to sound a bit louder

I’ve always gotten the base models but this year i went pro, it looks more mature imo.
AOD drains less if you turn off raise to wake and just use tap to wake, it’s what i do and my phone last all day.
Battery life in general is much better after a few software updates 👌🏼

Yes it's definitely tough, at first especially. Speaking to people who've done it though, some say you eventually just forget about the downgrade parts and get used to it - so it's still possible!

People who say they can see 120 Hz are such gimmicks. I'll do a test where I blank the phone(just part of the screen ticking out and just let them slide past the frames. They all get it wrong. How do they push it as can't be missed tech when they ...miss ...it whilst viewing.

The iPhone 14(non-pro) lineup is completely obsolete. The iPhone 14 is identical to the 13 and the 14 plus is the same price is 100 dollars cheaper than the 13 pro max so for 100 bucks you get pro features. as for the 14 pro, the dynamic island is just a gimmick and the 42MP camera is only for those who are going to properly use it.
