    After a year of struggling with my backhand, this video helped me, after 1 day of practice I hit 4/5 usually about a foot over and can even place it to more or less hit the centre line. Modified it a little but here are my steps. 1. Bend your knee on approach (helps so you dont hit over the ball into the net, and for stability because you are planting your foot) 2. See the bounce of the ball (very important for timing and getting a good contact) 3. Exaggerated low to high swipe 4. Make sure you swing is one continuous motion with no stop and start. The low to high swipe will give you topspin and allow for more margin of error if you hit it harder because the ball is dropping. Try to not go full power on the swing and try to balance power and control.

    Thank you! After watching this, I figured out what I had been doing wrong: on follow-through, I had been rotating my upper torse completely (i.e. my chest completely opened up and facing the net). This would not only give me a very poor control but rob my swing of power that comes from the force of inertia put on the arm's whipping motion when hip rotation is suddenly stopped. Same principle of inertia is used on the forehand. What puts power on the swing is not the hip rotation but its abrupt stop.

    Thanks man, my backhand is horrible and I found this really easy to follow and appreciate the emphasis on the main points rather than perfecting all of the nuances (which is more like a Phase 2 for me).

  • @matrevel9938
    @matrevel9938 Před 10 měsíci

    not moving the head after contact is probably the key element for people who already have basic knowledge on the other stuff, it will help controling the rotation of your body so you control your swing

    Good explanation. Sometimes when I want to add more power I use to hit way across out of the backhand area because of extra turn. Your point of keeping the balance by stretching the arms with your explanation now explains why I did that. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

  • @Jacmac1

    The interesting aspect of the technique, is that it requires the body positioning to be fairly close to the ball's trajectory. It would appear to be very difficult to perform if the ball position is a real stretch to hit at all. Nice demonstration!

    Thanks, Milan! This is a superb and simple breakdown. I came here because at my level (4.5) players pick on my backhand. I was considering a switch to two hands...until seeing this. I clearly dont have good technique. I am a big guy and I can hit hard on the backhand side but my footwork and swing mechanics need help. It also breaks down under duress unlike my forehand. Bravo...I will report back with results.

    I liked your demonstration, as a former professional, US University coach and instructor I like to point out how the butt of the racket pushes away from the body and how you hold the head of the racket with your left hand as you get into your set position; pointing out what your fingers are doing. Just some handy tips that go a long way for the tennis enthusiast. Then as you start to swing the racket comes closer to the body giving your wind up a circular motion of out then in wind up for power. One last thing I do and I learned is that when I bring the racket down and begin to swing I use my thumb on my left hand to press down the head, sort of a push while my right hand grip is trying to lift up the head of the racket for the topspin. I feel that those little tips have made significant impact with my students. Keep up the good work on your videos.

    From Bill Tilden to present day top players, NO one can hit a backhand more accurate, graceful and effective than the great Ken Rosewall. With the same motion Ken can drive, chip, dink, lob or drop shot you. Many great serve and volleyer found their 100 + mph serve returned by Ken with a slice backhand that landed on their shoe top.

It' s crazy how all the other channels don' t mention this and some of them do, but they are completely wrong and they want you to move that arm back too early. Compliments really.
