1. Don’t use soil from your garden: buy potting plant mix
2. Don’t plant your seeds too deep
3. Label your seeds
4. Not enough or too much water
5. Not enough overhead light. Get a grow light for indoors.
6. Don’t give up!
I just did 45 plants and just used soil from my little garden 🤣🤣

Put a coffee filter in the pot before you fill it with seed starting mix. When you water, the filter will allow the water to drain as well as prevent soil from washing out of the pot's drainage holes.

I grew pepper seedlings from the seeds inside a bell pepper and I put them in garden soil in the container you get mushrooms in when you buy them from the store. I kept that in my greenhouse and they are gorgeous. A beautiful green and doing so well.

To help your seedlings grow stronger, be better prepared for transplanting and to cut back on acclimating time place a small aucilating fan on low to blow slightly on your seedlings as they grow.
One year I found your videos mid July and started gardening. It was really late in the year but I followed your tips, started from seed, and grew 5 huge tomatoes on my balcony in a container! This year I live at a house and there is so much room for a garden. I'm gonna get started early start this time - so excited for a proper go this time!

Step 1: Soapy Soak. After you knock any dry soil out of the pots, fill up your sink or a large bucket with warm water. ...

Step 4: Bleach Disinfectant Soak.
Pots should be soaked in a solution of 1 part household bleach and 9 parts water for an hour, and then rinsed and soaked in clear water to remove any bleach residue that remains.

Loved this video - I'm getting ready to start my first veggie garden - have only done ornamentals so far - and have been feeling a bit overwhelmed as I've also decided to start with seeds, which adds an extra challenge. But like you said, it's fun to experiment and I'm looking forward to seeing my first results...whatever they may be!

Please don't use peat pellets if you can avoid it - coconut coir provides much of the same benefits while being a renewable resource. Peat *isn't* renewable and collecting it destroys bog ecosystems that rely on it for filtering the water. It takes over a hundred years for the sphagnum moss to build up and decomp into peat, coir gets replaced often because it actually breaks down in your soil and if you're like me with heavy clay soil in Texas, it can seriously help combat against compaction and drainage issues.

I use regular outside dirt to start my seeding. They grow fine. I live at Buffalo NY. I use grow lights. I also use my goldfish tank water to fertilize my plants.
Thanks for sharing; if that works for you go for it! Regular dirt can lack nutrients for a good strong starting soil...but heck, if it's working for you, keep doing it. You may want to try a test group with Seed Starting Mix...just for fun. Thanks for watching and commenting Virgil!

Hi Kim. I have pepper seedlings already well along the way. I planted my tomatoes today. All are heirloom varieties. I am experimenting to see which heirlooms will do well in Louisiana zone 8. Last year some the heirlooms I grew did better than the hybrids. I have never enjoyed gardening more that when I began starting my own seeds. It opens a huge world of possibilities as to which varieties you can grow, instead of depending on the big nurseries who stock the stores with only a few varieties. Thank you for encouraging and teaching people to sprout their own.
I'm above you in NW corner of Louisiana. I grew Rutgers Tomatoes last year and even with the drought, they did fairly well compared to others. Word of advice. Start raising your own worms for worm castings. Easy to do and pays off big time.
@@johnvaughn3489 Yup, worm castings can get pricey. Saves money on fertilizers and waste disposal in the long run.

CG, I really love the feel of being there just on the opposite side of the table planting along with Kim :) And Kim, my favorite of all tips (even though they have all helped me) is number 6 never give up!!! This truly encompasses much more than I realized at first but you’ve always encouraged it through other tips... patience, experimenting, trying something new and many more! The first three rules I instinctively knew, but I didn't know about proper temperature, timing and lighting. Also, that light box is very clever and interesting. I see that having a creative mind to build comes in handy when finding places to germanate your seeds. Thank you for this video.

Helped a lot! I’ve been trying to get into growing my own vegetables but never new how to do it properly. I either over water or add the garden soil to first. This literally helped me understand what’s good and bad!

Another good reason for starting seeds indoors is that, often, it takes more heat for seeds to sprout than it takes the resulting plant to grow!
I made the mistake of using garden soil my first try (last year) because I didn't want to buy soil that was shipped from who-knows-where ville. Hopefully I can learn to make seed starting mix from material I can get either myself or from local producers.

This made me so excited to start but it’s a bit too early for my zone. However I have a plan written out and I can get my supplies together now! I will be starting tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, zinnias and some herbs indoors. Cold tolerant veggies I start outdoors as soon as the soil can be worked. Can’t wait, great video!!

Hi Kim I love your video. I live in Ireland and this will be our first year starting a garden. My kitchen is full of seedlings hope to get some out into a small green house we purchase soon. Great video - a thing that you should also do is to keep the plants outside before transplanting them into the soil. They need to adapt towards the new place.

Love all the information! I already have some tomatoes and pepper plants I got from the garden center but I have not attempted the seeds for beets, squash, radishes, cucumbers, kale, spinach, basil, cilantro, and carrots. You have given me the courage to get going. Here in Southern California early is a good idea as the sun gets intense. Any tips for shade later would be welcome.

I’m in Pittsburgh and just started about 12 varieties of peppers yesterday along with 8 slicer tomato varieties. I know I’ll have to transplant again before planting out in the garden but I am experimenting to see how much earlier I can get a harvest if I’m willing to do a little extra work in the spring. I don’t want to wait until August for tomatoes and peppers so we’ll see how this goes. Thanks for sharing your tips. Very informative video as always.

If you plant them outside early and a frost gets forecast, cover them with a 3 gallon black container as the temperature dips below freezing. You often get those black container for free at nurseries. Some may have a low charge for used containers. But they will maintain heat around the plant. Add plastic tape over the weep holes if necessary to hold the heat in.

Gardening isn't that hard! You can do it! Gives you a new appreciation for farmers. Tomatoes, peppers and beans are the easiest of all! Just give tomatoes room to grow and make sure beans can climb unless they are a bush habit. You might also like Rainbow Gardens on CZcams she is great
I started my Mammoth Sunflowers inside. They are absolutely beautiful. I'm going to transplant them in a week or two, when they are ready. :)

Toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls work well to start seeds.

It's 9f here with snow in Michigan. I'll be starting mine middle of March. Tomatoes , cucumbers watermelon , green peppers Marigolds. Sunflowers petunias . It's so hard to wait.

I've already started some seeds and learned a few mistakes I made but I think I can overcome them. Here in southern AZ the weather has been colder and more cloudy than usual so I've had to hold off putting in cool weather seeds. Great tips for me to follow. And I've learned, from you, that worm castings really help plants grow. Thanks.

great job this is really a great idea been doing it for years if you go out in spring and buy a plant a pepper plant might cost you five bucks so think about $5 versus a penny it's a heck of a deal we all need to think about growing food. times are going to get harder food will become more scarce we should all be prepared and start doing just like this beautiful lady said grow from seed save a lot of money learn how to grow food very important for the future

have you started yet? I live in central Yukon and generally start mid-end March. We have an early spring again this year, second time in 3 years which is so unusual. All snow has been gone for 2 weeks already.
Northern Ontario? The top 3 crops there are Turnips, Turnips & Turnips. And the other crops that will do well there are....um....uummmm.......Turnips!

I always use fine compost amended garden soil because it doesn't dry out so easy and is less algae prone. I gave up on those overpriced peat pellets, and they also can stunt root growth if you don't remove that netting when transplanting. I also reuse nursery packs and containers for as long as they last. The world has a big plastic waste problem that we can't ignore. Peat bogs aren't in infinite supply either from what I have heard. Local and free works for me.
batforjustice.............I do the same, works out really well, and cheaper. I like my plants already being used to my garden soil. The plants don't slow down on growth for the first two weeks of transplanting. The plants don't even realize they're being transplanted.
Well, my garden soil is heavy red clay, so not sure this will work for me. Trying to add compost, but they are putting a lot of woody material in all the bagged products, which my seeds do not like.

Mistake #1 -- Keep your cats out of your seedling room! uh. oh.
That's what I worry about trying to start them indoors!!! The garage seems too cold but the cats have free reign all inside. I know they will totally try to knock over the shelving or the plants themselves!
I have a room that none of my four cats are allowed in, that's where I will be growing my seedlings...
Had a cat that would destroy an entire garden in the matter of 5 minutes....chomping all my nice seed starts right down to the dirt.
Old thread but: You haven't seen devastation until you see what one cat can do to a tray of soil blocks.

Doing well so far but had 3 plants to decease but the rest are doing very good. Also going to start early spring seedlings next year. Can’t wait. This will be my new hobby. Grow light schedule: 16 hours (on) plus 6 hours (off)...what happens to the missing 2 hours?

It was probably a math mistake, maybe she meant (16 on & 8 off )or (18 on & 6 off ) 🤷🏻♀️
I put my grow lights on strobe during the extra 2 hours. My plants like to disco now.

Here in Hawaii we've been having a real winter with cold wind and lots of rain.
Our garden is doing well with everything green and growing on the north side garden.
On the south side garden I need to replant all the beds ..... I'm working on it in the rain today. lol

Love you kim! Your awesome. Do you ever buy seeds from baker creek online? Also what about using recycled toilet paper rolls to make peat pots?
I actually use newspapers or paper bags to make mine. I roll them around those small tomato paste cans. I start everything in them and IFF I need to "transplant" into a bigger pot I make some that are larger using a whole peeled tomato can. Think they are 6oz and 28oz. I have never had an issue with transplant stress doing this. I have tried TP and paper towel rolls but they seem to take long to break down for me. I usually have to tear the bottom away but they do work in a pinch.
The sound quality on this video is incredibly good. It sounds like you're wearing a lavalier microphone (lapel mic) but I don't see one on your blouse. Either it's hidden really well, or you had some pro-quality audio equipment there next to the camera as you shot this. Usually on CZcams, you see amateurs making videos and the sound quality is quite often the last thing they ever figure out how to get right. This video stands head and shoulders above most for sound quality, that's for sure! Can you let me in on how you achieved that?

This was so helpful! starting my very first garden, Doing tomatoes, peppers, corn, basil, dill, lettuce, broccoli and a couple more. The weather here in central ohio, Columbus is very mild and rains alot. today was sunny and 70 degrees though. I was able to het all the raised beds up and ready for soil! Yay!
LABELS!!!! Lol great tip. I have found myself getting lost in the zen of planting seeds and forgetting this step on many occasions!
Also about seeds sowing depth. I have found it doesn't seem to matter. Yes, you don't want to put them at the very bottom, but I just sow everything half inch deep, with few exceptions. Never had germination issues.
I started my pellets and they work amazing! I have multiple seeds popping up in one pellet though, will I need to get rid of them or is it okay to keep them all?

Loved the video, didn't do well last year, bought seeds again for this year. I have great light in my attic, will give it another try. I have my lavender up in attic window over the winter, and they are thriving, plus it smells wonderful.
