I only just discovered the Wailin' Jennys today and all I can say is "Holy Cow, those girls can sing!". I grew up in the shadow of the nation's Capitol and surrounding suburbia in the 60s and 70s; consequently I was raised on a steady diet of The Rolling Stones, Jimmy Hendrix, The Who, Led Zeppelin, etc. It wasn't till I moved out to farm country in 2010 that I discovered the utter beauty of this style of music (it seems a cross between Blue Grass and Country to me, but what do I know?). About the time of the relocation, I also discovered Prairie Home Companion and tried listening on Sunday nights as often as I could. For some reason, I got up this morning and thought to do a search on youtube for any PHC clips and sure enough there were a ton of them. Quite by chance, the first video I selected was one that featured the bass player here singing. I was utterly and completely floored by the melodious, mellifluous beauty of her voice. I did some more research, learned about her band, the Wailing Jennys, and I think it fair to say, I'm hooked! By the way, I love how she (the bass player) undulates and sways as she plucks...sheer poetry in motion and music!
Thanks Bryn. It's neither one of those. I caught the song on the radio while listening to national public radio but didn't catch the title. Prior to this, I have never even heard of the Walin' Jennys, but now I like them very much.
OMG!!! I never even thought to look for this channel. I loved the PHC so much for many years. I haven't seen/heard it in a long time and it made me so happy to see this.
I'll never understand why no-talent goofs like Justin Beiber, Young Jeezy, 50 Cent, Psy, Miley Cyrus, etc., have a bajillion views, and REAL MUSIC like this has only 13K. How did we go from having bands like the Beatles in the 60s, who were not only the most outrageously popular at what they did but also happened to be the very BEST at what they did, to this lousy state of affairs? I just don't get it. Keep making this amazing music, Jennys, I'm listening!
Couldn't have said it better myself, the music industry has been strangled by greed. Bands like this have more talent than all those so called artists put together.
People thought they could make a business out of music and bank money off other people's talent. When the talent decided to go in a different direction telling the business to get bent the business had to try and create it.... it failed... hence... Beiber, Young Jeezy etc etc.... "I know in my time, in my generation, if you had come, if they tried to offer my generation music by someone that had won a game show, it would have been hysterical. I'm so glad they reloaded this video after taking it down a few weeks ago. I'm assuming they did so because of the Garrison Keiller issue...and needed to re-brand everything to "Live from Here."

The harmonies are absolutely beautiful, but what I love MOST about the Wailin' Jennys is how they make understatement so powerful.
These angelic voices are soothing, elegant and never tiresome. I recently discovered them and glad I did.
