Good Basic Info about Painting on Watercolor Papers
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
Traditionally, painters prefer to paint on both paper and canvas. The most popular single sheet sizes of watercolor paper are available in 22x30 inches. Papers are also available in various standard sizes in pads or blocks. There are large rolls of watercolor paper - it’s liberating to work on a roll 48 inches wide by 30 feet long! Imagine what you can create on paper that large?
Watercolor paper comes in varying thicknesses too - I generally paint on 140 lb or 300 lb. For my work using collage, I get the best results with the 300 lb Kilimanjaro watercolor paper. It remains flat when wet. The 140 lb is ideal for my small warmup paintings.
Another choice to consider is the “finish” of the surface. It will either be Hot Press (HP) or Cold Press (CP). Hot press is smooth, while cold press has a slight “tooth” in the texture. Paint glides on differently on both choices of paper. Try them both and decide!
So why do I gesso my watercolor paper? I like the feel of a pre-gessoed surface. I want the paint to react the same, whether I am working on paper or canvas. I prefer brushing or wiping a professional-quality, thick gesso over the entire surface. Plus, painting on a dried gessoed surface gives me a much longer paint time for improvisation and play.
Watch the demo - I use a beautiful gold gesso by Holbein. They have 23 colors of gesso.
The final part of this BobBlast is about tearing the watercolor paper. I like to work on a smaller format for my warmups - so I tear the paper into six, 10x10 inch squares. I demo this part too! Here are the steps:
•Fold the paper to the desired size and flatten the fold
•Fold back and forth several times
•With your hands, start the tear at the top
•Tear the paper away from itself
•Deckled edges!

Hi Bob. Happy Belated birthday to ya. I so so so enjoy and appreciate your teaching. I have a paper question. Here it comes……. I bought a huge roll of quality watercolor paper. I struggle to tame the curl of it. Do you cut it into a manageable sizes and then soak it in the bathtub and then let it dry flat, like me? Flat papers are much more convenient, but the giant roll saved money.
Hi Karen, Thanks for the birthday wishes! When I buy a roll of paper, I cut it in the desired size and then roll it back the other way. That usually takes care of it. If there is still a bend in it, I will put it under a rug - or put books/blocks etc on top of it.

I have a question about the deckled edge example, do you have a preference on doing the deckled edge before painting or in this case after the painting? And after creating the deckled edge , and it's white like the paper, I'm wondering if it should be left alone or colored in? Once again,thank you for all your terrific videos! I just love'em!
Thanks for your message. I will generally create the deckled edge prior to painting. If you did the deckle-tearing after you painted, I would tint the edges so they wouldn't be as noticeable.
Should you not tear the paper before it is gessoed or painted on ?
Whoops, mixed up lbs and grams and have two pads of 140lb, 300g, cold press watercolor paper. Good for practice! 😁 I also found that buying the larger size and cutting it down to what I normally use was cheaper than buying the normal size I use

Very helpful! Thank you. I just got my first sheet of Kilimanjaro 300 lb paper. One question: Kilimanjaro has their name imprinted on the edge. Do you tear that part off too? That or it has to be under frame but I like your black cradle board method.
Thanks - I don't worry about the name imprint. If I am painting in a square format, I will tear it off.
What about paper designed for Acrylic paint? It doesn't say it's been prepped w/ gesso. Anyone tried it with &/or without gesso? Pros? Cons?
Do you also go back and tear the other two straight sides as well or leave two straight and two deckled?
