The UK 14" model has the option to add a 2.8K (up from 2.2K) 90hz, 400 nit, 100% sRGB display for only an extra ÂŁ50. Makes the 14 inch model really competitive as an entry-to-mid level thin-and-light.

Since you would be typing a lot for academic course, I would suggest you try these laptop keyboard at Lenovo showroom. This would clear out your doubt of how they would fit your requirement. Full keyboard and ten keyless variants as in the 14-inch variant also provide differing experience in terms of how you would align your hand and if you require the numpad. And lastly keyboard is very subjective matter, and it is good to try them before buying.

@JustJosh I've just realised that there's a 2022 Lenovo laptop that's better value than the Slim 7 Pro X and more suitable as an everyday driver for non-power users than these IdeaPads BUT it doesn't appear to be available in the US so it may have slipped under your radar: the Ryzen 6000 U-series powered 2in1 Yoga 7 Gen 7. Available with a 2.8K QHD screen it has all the bells and whistles of these other laptops but with the 28W CPU and the new Radeon 680 integrated graphics it offers amazing all round ability as well as quieter running and better battery life than the Alder Lake (or even Ryzen H or HS) powered alternatives. Obviously, it has only modest gaming ability and is no good for video editing or other power applications but for average users, it's possibly the best Windows ultrabook currently available at the price (c. $1,100). Pretty amazing for a 2-in-1 which normally means a value-compromised machine. I don't think you can review it however as you won't be able to get one unless you buy it in Europe or APAC?

Bought the 14" with the Ryzen 7 6800HS without a dedicated GPU after working with an HP ProBook 6475b for the last 10 years or so. Sadly the value is not that great (like for all other PC electronics rn) here in Germany and there weren't any student discounts for them either so I had to pay the ~1200€ including VAT.
Can confirm that the laptop is getting pretty loud under full load and I can hear it with light tasks but it's fine for what it is. With the 8 core variant of the CPU I still don't have any issues with the laptop getting too warm. Although the integrated graphics are great I'm constatly running into the 2 GB VRAM wall and I think they could be even better if you could dedicate just a little more of your memory to the iGPU.

So do I. I got the ideapad 5 pro gen 6 with ryzen 7 5800H and GTX 1650 and 500GB disk, as it was the only config available in the UK at the time. Overall, I am quite pleased with the laptop, but the one issue I have with it is its heat distribution. Even if I only use the laptop for simple tasks like browsing websites, the panel above the function keys tends to get so hot it's impossible to touch it without scalding your fingers, and the numeric keys in the middle section (4 to 0) are usually quite warm as well. I guess it's useful in winter, but I'd rather not have to 'enjoy' this feature all the time. Similarly, after just a few minutes of using the laptop, the bottom part of the chassis gets so hot I literally cannot keep it on my lap without a protective pad. I was wondering if it's normal for this model, or if it's just my experience... Would you care to share yours? thanks.

I’m not sure if its still good value for money to get it now because its a laptop that came out almost 2 years ago. I can’t tell when this version (gen 7) is coming to our market and if it will be priced the same or slightly higher to the 785$ price tag of the gen 6 today.
I’d love to get the gen 7 version with the euro display tbh. Its brighter and has 90hz refresh rate.

Based on your last year models praises, I got one with 5600H and RTX 3050. It has been a great laptop for its size and weight. Good for work, content consumption and lighter gaming with the big and fast screen. I have been enjoying playing Fallout New Vegas, Divinity: Original Sin, DOOM 2016 and other a bit older games along with Risk of Rain 2 for newer releases.
Something that didn't come up in your review is that the 3,5mm audio port creates a nasty buzzing sound with active speakers if there is no sound playing on the computer. I guess that it has something to do with power management switching something off because if an ambient inaudible sound is playing, there is no buzz with the 3,5mm connected speakers. It's a minor annoyance that's solved with playing some inaudible sound on a loop.

Hi Josh. Great review. I just bought the 16” Pro with the 6600HS, and love it, except for one maddening detail. And it is making me want to return it, but all the other specs and great build quality are hard to give up. That detail is the fact that the fans (or fan - not sure if it’s only one) rev up when the CPU temp reaches about 40 degrees C, which happens even when doing something so easy as launching another app or scrolling a browser. It’s ridiculous! It wouldn’t be so noticeable if the fans were always running, but since they cut in and out, it’s very noticeable in an otherwise quiet room. The BIOS provides no fan settings, and custom fan curves and other nice tweaks provided by various third party utilities don’t support this new CPU yet. Do you happen to have a solution?

@@alexp3577 Yup, it happens on the balanced power mode too. If I was doing something that actually *justified* having the fans run, I'd be fine with it, but I'm not doing anything CPU intensive AT ALL. And the fans turn on at 40 degrees C all the damn time. The temp then drops to 34 or so after a few minutes, but the minute it creeps up to 40, the fans turn on. I'm not sure if it's both fans or just one and I've found no utility that will tell me that either: the fans seem to be invisible to all third party sensor monitoring apps.

@@AhmedAkram903 It's ok, but I'm not a "performance user". I merely wanted a new laptop with future-proof specs to replace my trusty Dell Inspiron 15" that I bought in 2016. That one BTW, didn't start running the fans until the 2 core CPU hit 70 degrees C. I couldn't do better than Josh does starting at 6:20 where he benchmarks the 16" AMD model and compares it to similar ones. The fan noise when doing virtually nothing (CPU at 40 degrees C) is STILL quite annoying and I haven't gotten used to it. And I also have another problem I'm still trying to diagnose: random restarts that happen overnight when the machine is in sleep mode. After disabling sleep mode the laptop hasn't restarted during the day in the past 10 days, and I shut it down at night. I'll be letting it stay booted up at night in a few days to see it if still doesn't randomly reboot when in sleep mode, even at night.

Hello Josh. I hope you see this message. There are practically no laptops for programmers on the market ... You have to choose from stripped-down multimedia laptops or monstrous gaming laptops. What programmers want is a powerful gaming laptop, but without a discrete GPU. The 90-140W GPU makes the laptop heavy, thick, and also adds a huge power supply. The Legion 5 Pro, for example, is a great laptop for software developers if it wasn't for the discrete GPU. It would be thinner and lighter but would have a powerful cooling solution (no high frequency sound), 2 memory slots, 2 SSD slots, 165hz screen! The only model that comes to mind is the Dell xps-17. But it has an Intel processor (which is not at all energy efficient) and is very expensive(cost like two gaming laptops).
