- Two strangers, trying to avoid the crowd at a wedding reception, end up making an unexpected connection.
RECEPTION is used with permission from Joe Gillette. Learn more at vimeo.com/joegillette.
Paul is the best man in a wedding, watching the post-ceremony proceedings with an air of detachment and melancholy. While he's surrounded by an atmosphere of love and happiness, he's clearly not quite feeling it himself.
But as he tries to avoid the crowd, he meets Jessie, and the conversation between two strangers eventually turns into a spark.
Writer-director Joe Gillette's short romantic dramedy is a sweet, witty slice of life that focuses on how people really truly connect to one another. In a genre where the "meet cute" is often a little too clever, facile and clouded in fantasy, this short is well-scripted, with an eye to explore genuine emotional resonance, especially among ordinary people who struggle with simple everyday awkwardness.
With such honest, compelling dialogue, the performances stand out, achieving a verisimilitude emphasized by the film's minimalist visual approach. Essentially a long conversation taking place between two people, the camera keeps the attention tightly on the two actors, giving the audience the privilege of watching two people come out of their shells and spark a connection between two people.
RECEPTION is simple and elegant in execution, but the ideas and feelings underlying this small-scale gem are messy, complicated, vulnerable and compelling. Open-hearted and sincere, it just may inspire viewers to look at life through the lens of opportunity -- and expand horizons in their own everyday way. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
"Hey Jess, do you want to dance?" Looks like he finally found someone to dance with too...
The way she instantly turned and said "yeah!" - she was desperately praying he would finally do something
Way too underrated comment

Well said
Everyone says the girl's carrying the convo, but if you're in his shoes, I don't think you'd have the mood to sail a convo smoothly.
Very true. I think people forget the context of the conversation, as well. This isn't two people on a date, where both are expected to equally contribute to a flowing conversation. They are two random people who are slowly and spontaneously getting to know each other. The conversation is bound to be choppy/awkward in the beginning.

It was part of the game, like the flirting. She said "someone quicker" and then she gave him the shot and he took it.

It does help tho that the chick is relatively talkative like her. Some are not so much and then it doesnt last past 1 minute.
These two actors are terrific. When he demonstrates the faux phone call, pulling off a second layer of acting within acting, that was impressive.

The dialogue is so realistic. The small awkward pauses, his stuttering and stammering almost like you can see him thinking of the right words as if he's not going off a script

This short packs more pure entertainment into 21 minutes than most full length movies.
I’m divorced after being married for 35 years, never expected to meet someone who would mirror who I am. This short film reminded how lucky I am to meet my partner by walking into a restaurant and seeing her at the counter. After 4th time going there, when I pay my check, I slipped her my phone number with bill. She texted me 3 weeks later and wish me a Happy New Year. From then on, we’ve been together for 4 years
Well done buddy 👏🏻
I like the character progression displayed here. Jess at the beginning said that she constantly checks on her phone, yet throughout their convo, she hasn't reached for her phone once. Paul, told a story about how he's a wallflower and that he didn't have anyone to dance with at the prom, but by the end of it he asked Jess to dance
In my life, her husband would've texted her or come to get her.

2 each other and 'hitting it off" and are complete at ease with each other.
Wow, there is hope yet. Mmmmmm im getting the feels.
I hear ya sir however, unfortunately in this day and age 'hope' is futile.
Some people get lucky and some don't, some win some lose.
Being human is a trauma in and of itself.
@@Andre-hm5vo Haha dude we should get a coffee, I like the way you are put together, not gay though.
@@FranktheDachshund You sure? (not being gay, suggestion two guys getting together for a coffee, and not a beer) Just joking dude.
I'm a realist my friend and all I see in people/environments is problems everywhere, that being because authenticity/naturality is destroyed or rare if one is trying to seek truth/sense (me) in this dysfunctional world.
Her mannerisms are on point for the personality type she's embodying. If I had to describe it, it'd be humorous and slightly insane. And they're generally some of the most fun girls you'll ever meet. Great stuff
but trouble I would suggest.
"And that, kids, is how I met your mother"
Yes, in 20 minutes, instead of NINE YEARS!
im triggered
@@jjstreet5 Ahahaha me too!
I was searching for this comment!!
Both bestmen of their bestfriend marrying their ex girlfriend meeting someone not part of either the bride or groom's family
This Omeleto thing is a revelation. I had no idea there were all these great shorts just floating out there!
Same here, can’t stop watching them
aafster life I concur
Just discovered these, made youtube 20 times better
I know right! This is my new Netflix!
I just discovered Omeleto today. For the past hour Ive been Omeletoing non stop.
I must have watched this 20 times over the last 4 years. 21 minutes feel like 3 minutes every time.
Incredible short. Haven’t been so invested in 2 characters like that in a long time haha solid buildup, solid twist, and a perfect “inside joke” ending
This is such a Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone film.
she's emma stone but he ain't no Ryan Gosling
Huh, yup.
She actually strikes me as a young Katey Sagal
No ... this is a film of these two
Totally! I don't know about the guy, but the girl sounded exactly like Emma Stone
i love how the background music changes as the conversation progresses.
ps i only noticed when i watched it the 23rd time
Kanu Favour Well, I now have a great excuse to watch this all over again!
I don't even remember how much i watch this

The fact that I can relate with both the characters at its own different levels, amazes me. Everything about this film is a beauty. ✨
For me, this film was a true gift. Many years ago, I had an experience--at a friend's wedding--that was stunningly like this. The conversation was a bit different, but the spontaneous kiss was as lovely as any moment in my life. Thank you for capturing that memory so perfectly.
So what's the update with the wedding guy?
She gives me massive Emma Stone vibes 😂 I loved this so much. They have such chemistry 😭
Rachel Cat the comment I was looking for
Yeah looks like Andrew and Emma in here
I LOOKED EVERYWHERE FOR THIS COMMENT THANK YOU
I finally found a comment about that
She gives me even more Lois Lane from Smallville vibes 😃😃
The female character made me feel she's hilarious. The male is as effective. Good script, great acting. A nice thing off to a good start. Wish this short film was developed into a full romantic movie.
YES ! I felt the same way. I would love to see this as a movie or a series. Their chemistry was amazing.
To me it was a full romantic film. Thank you, algorithm. This was lovely.
Exactly, I so wanna see this in like a series.
I agree...would love to see the rest of this movie!!!
So u should watch before's trilogy
She's pretty good about handling a man dangling on the edge of feeling sorry for himself. The whole "I'm sure she's lovely but I see you with..." was masterful.
Also, wouldn't it be funny if she set herself an SOS alarm then forgot about it.
perhaps the whole "Karen" thing was just made up so she could exit any uncomfortable situation at the reception.
A million likes. The actor, writer and director is Joe Gillette, same guy. Great video. Great Performance. Just 2 people so you are wholly invested in them without any interruption/disturbance.
FANTASTIC! Every second is magical! Great script, acting, directing and editing! A little gem of a film! They should be famous! Such talent!
The producing was so good that they only needed a background, some props and only 2 great actors to pull off one of the most captivating conversations I have ever heard
Absolutely! It was perfection!!!
my parents met at a wedding and my mom basically said to my dad "everyone else is dancing except us, so are we going to go dance or we can just sit here all night"
hahahahahah
She's a genuine one. No drama, just genuine. Who said genuine has to be dour? Hopefully I'll meet someone like this before it's too late.
The fact I was uncomfortable with them pretending to be awkward shows what great actors they are, this was so good.
And it ends with her saying “I do”. Loved this. Great acting.
That actually didn't connect with me until now. Thanks a bunch!
Imagine he did the phone thing to the lady and THE END.
lmao i was thinking abt that too 😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂 i was thinking the same shuttt upppp
Loved how it ended. I was freaking out and mourning a missed opportunity for a second. Ohhh how excruciatingly relatable
