  • A lonely taxi driver takes drastic action to protect a customer from heartbreak.
HALO is used with permission from Michael-David McKernan. Learn more at mdmckernan.com.
Dara is a taxi driver taking a couple home for the night, observing them as they canoodle and flirt in the backseat. He's lonely and disconnected, working long nights at his job, watching people's lives happen as he spends his shifts alone.
Then he picks up a kind, attractive passenger, Sarah. She intends on surprising her boyfriend for the night, who thinks Sarah is away traveling. But then he realizes she's heading into an emotionally sticky situation, one that will result in certain heartbreak for her -- something he tries desperately to protect her from.
Written and directed by Michael-David McKernan -- who also plays Dara -- this short drama captures the languid, contemplative rhythms of the end of a night when people are heading home for the evening. It also captures a liminal space between roles, places and emotions, when lives both fall apart and come together in unexpected ways.
Shot in one continuous take on location in Dublin, the camera remains in the car with Dara for the entire film. It pans slowly between the driver and his backseat passengers, occasionally framing both within the same composition. Complemented by murky, almost noirish night cinematography, the visual approach stretches out time, emphasizing its heaviness and emptiness, especially as it would be experienced by Dara. It's fascinating in how it puts viewers in the headspace of someone who exists in the margins of other people's lives as they experience love, lust and anger -- but Dara remains distant from these emotions, and perhaps much of life, himself.
Many one-take films often capture bravura action sequences or very dialogue-heavy emotional situations, but what's unique about this narrative is how relatively minimalist it is, especially in its dialogue. Actors Michael-David McKernan and Toni O'Rourke both have a flicker of sympathy and connection between them, expressed in the attentive and more-than-cursory glances between them. They also capture the unique dynamic of distance and intimacy between a driver conveying passengers between some of the most important moments and destinations of their lives.
As their lives converge, the film becomes a fascinating, contemplative snapshot of two lives shifting. The tone and gaze are at first coolly removed and almost voyeuristic, but then shifts to something more fragile and tender, especially as Dara finds himself invested in Sarah's situation, which he knows will be a harsh realization for her. Set at the intersection of heartbreak, infidelity and perhaps even fate, HALO unfurls those moments in life when crisis, opportunity and transformation intersect in fascinating, poetic ways, and the seemingly ordinary rhythms of life reveal a newer, richer melody.

I once flew a whole day to surprise my boyfriend (almost fiance), drove from NY to Boston which took another 2 hours and found out he was cheating on me. I had to take a cab back to NY to fly back home. There were no flights back that night so I had to stay a night in NY and the cab driver drove me all over NY just to find me a hotel. He knew from the phone calls from my sister that I was heartbroken and he did everything he could to help me out. He didn't want to take any money even though he drove me around for 2 hours until I found a hotel. He came to pick me up the next day from the hotel in his own car to take me to the airport and did not take any money. Even though that night I found out that my ex was a douche, I did not lose trust in humanity. There are some very decent people like Dara out there. Beautiful story! I watched it with tears in my eyes. Bravo!!

The loneliest hearts are the kindest.
Dara breaks my heart. The actor, who played him did an excellent job. He conveyed so much about Dara, just through body language and facial expression.
Also, his face in the first bit, where the couple is making out, I can so identify. I have worked service jobs my whole life and if I had a dime for every time I was treated like a fly on the wall, like I wasn't actually there. It's awkward and a bit ridiculous. Be honest, in a real life situation she would have called the police on me for not dropping her off when she asked, and I would have probably agreed with her because I would have been alarmed too if it had happened to me. I understand being a good Samaritan but use your words. Tell the person why, rather than do something that might be misinterpreted. If you have the courage to help her out of that situation then also have the courage to tell her why you did not want her to go to that apartment rather than do something so alarming .

It is well written, the acting is great. So great that I forgot, at times, that I was watching a short film and truly thought it was like getting to be a spectator in someone's true life story. Great movie and my only complaint was the way the driver went about protecting the client, however it was understood at the end and the ending was a good one, at least for the driver.

When you have no family left and no children and no friends every moment of everyday can be filled with pain. The most crowded of places are the loneliest and watching couples hold hands or link each other become noticed like people in colour against the grey backdrop of silhouettes. If you have ever felt this and most people haven't then what can you do to give meaning to your life. Imagine also being unemployed and then nothing could really be bleaker than this. Imagine also suffering from untreatable depression and an addiction. These people are out there and these people see the world in a very different place. Makes me wonder why so may people have so many things yet just because they are not financially wealthy they are unhappy. The only thing in life that can truly bring you happiness is someone to love and someone who loves you.. I have no family and all my friends have moved away over the yrs. When my grandad was alone after my gran passes I went to see him most days. Now there is nobody to come and see me. Pls be kind to people who are alone. Just a kind word or deed can turn it all around for some people. Thanks Omeleto for this one:)

Very good performances added to what is a top piece of work.

Female passenger - very intuitive, very sharp, very quick witted and strong presence of mind. The cab driver could have in serious trouble with someone else. Imagine the presence of mind required to put everything together in a short time frame while being in an emotional roller coaster.
Our initial encounter with her makes me feel she may have had a sense of what the boyfriend was up to.
