Don’t take this the wrong way, which of course means take it the wrong way😊. I’ve been watching for a few months, every find you show seems to be pre-cleaned, etc. I know you have been under the weather, etc, but the one day you bring a friend out, you found nothing. I’m a salty old skeptical fart, but when you make these videos, keep that in mind. If you truly are finding these things, in the moment, that’s what we are here to see. Record those moments.
I do love the history presented in association with these items.
Are you being serious FF I cant tell? I find nothing the entire time - i have gigabites of video footage you will never see of endless days finding nothing - it was fun having John and i thought it would make for a change and no I do not pretend to find these things I suspect you rather hope i did.

@@HolzHammerSagas I’m seriously not trying to be an @rsehole, but I’ve also watched too many ridiculous metal detecting videos to take everything at face value. Perhaps it’s my sample size. I have not watched your older videos, but the videos since November/December show very few, if any “live” digs. Like I said, I’m a salty curmudgeon. If I’m completely off base, I apologize, but it’s what I see. Clean finds, nothing in situ, etc.

It was a cracking day spent sussing out a new field in fine company, and I'm so glad you managed to find the sort of stuff we suspected had to be there. Thanks for the opportunity, fellah. The talk on Crispus was top notch and something I wish more people would spend time doing to add some flesh to the bones of finds, though I'm not sure describing the end of the Tetrarchy as its having gone "tits up" is quite out of the David Starkey book of history presentation. But it'll do for me!

Fantastic Alexander, really interesting. Piqued my little brain into carrying out some light research into Crispus. He was actually born Malleableus and was thus called until he married his step aunt. This did not find favour and he was roundly savagely condemned, being burned at the stake. He was then referred to as Crispus.🙂

That's a lovely Roman, I find a load of them an 90% are pretty toasted! Often wonder if they were really good coins when produced an the rest were Not So Good! Thanks for the History lesson that's really interesting. Take care😊
Good question Roger - i suppose it depends on what quality copper/bronze they were using - sometimes I find the odd larger coin that is very smooth and worn which gives me the imoression it was good quality and very used... who knows but you are right 90% are a bit rough.. but look at what a copper Elizabeth II penny sometimes looks like after 20 years in the ground; sometimes it makes you think those romans aren't half bad after nearly 2000 years! That Roman coin with the globe is interesting since the Greeks are credited with identifying the Earth was round and it wasn't commonly known until around the 5th century AD.
I'm not sure Chuck but the Romans stole all their art, architecture, culture and literature from the greeks so maybe that makes sense... Hope all well!

Crikey Cyndye Rome at the beginning of the fourth century was a complete mess, until about 324 whenConstantine managed to go solo things seem to stabilise a bit but not for long I love reading about Roman history and I'm very lucky to find so much of it but I do live in an area which is good for Roman which is even more fortunate! Hope all well with you - it's about to get very cold here again which is a bore!
You won't want to hear this, but this weekend I need to put away my cold weather sweaters and such and bring out my hot weather gear. They say next weekend may be a bit nippy, but nothing a couple of light layers won't handle. I will think of you when I mop sweat off my brow. Got to get the veggie boxes ready and planted.

I can tell you are a thinking man and I did a bit more research and found this. "From around the 3rd Century BC onwards, it was common knowledge among educated people in the Greco-Roman world that the earth was spherical. Aristotle and Plato were both supporters of the spherical earth model, based on astronomical observations, as well as the fact that ships and landmasses disappear slowly over the horizon as they become further away (something that can’t have escaped a seafaring culture like the Greeks). In 240 BC, the mathematician Eratosthenes was able to calculate the circumference of the earth, to an astonishingly accurate degree, by measuring the different angles of shadows that the sun cast at different latitudes on the summer solstice."

Do read up about it Andrew it really is absolutely fascinating; Quite hard to follow - it gets very complicated! And I can't really recommend any proper decent books as I tend to get audible to read some fairly generic stuff to me and then I research after that! But there is something called the Great Courses with a lecturer called Rufus Fears who is brilliant on Roman and Greek stuff! Hope all well with you!

@@HolzHammerSagas Hi Alex not erratic just constantly very hot and humid but can’t complain, going to Cambodia next week . Found antique shop here quite unusual, picked up nice pair of marble elephants ( small ) and nice bronze Buddha , have to be careful as not supposed to take out of country

Good to see you back out on the fields, taking it easy. Slow & steady....blah, blah, blah, gets annoying as hell during the recovery process. Still, you did look a little 'delicate' towards the end. Those fields aren't going anywhere, & the bits underneath? They've waited this long to be found, a few more weeks is nothing. Enjoyed the lesson. Take care.
