The number one question I get is, "how can I get into HR with no experience?", so I decided to make a video with 10 tips on how to get into the human resources field with little to no experience. This video is perfect for new grads or for those looking to make a career switch. I drew from my own personal experience from when I worked in HR for 5 years. Hi Carmen! Thanks so much for your video. I was able to relate to it a lot. I just started working as an HR Admin a couple months ago. I have no experience with HR, so I was very nervous to take the job. The company has been in business for three years but still doesn't have any processes in place so that's where I came along and what I'm working on most of the time. I'm also working more with employees now-new hires, onboarding process, etc. I've also experienced a little bit of offboarding. I would love to see more videos about these topics. I still haven't conducted a "real" interview. I've just screened people briefly over the phone and I still get very nervous about it. It would be amazing to hear you talk a little bit about all of this. I love your personality and feel that I could learn a lot from you! Thanks in advance!

I love that you said take this with a grain of salt because when you mentioned applications get rejected when someone has done a master's in HR but has no experience it hit like a rock😂...I came to this video to receive information that would help me and I am glad you didn't sugar coat it. It is important to know why employers reject application and hopefully next time I go into an interview stage I can prove it to the company that I don't plan on leaving them because of my qualifications but instead use them to improve mine and the company's performance.
I came here after watching your first video and you have so many good tips! Thank you for sharing them. ☺ Especially when you said to look in other areas we wouldnt normally look like healthcare, retail, etc.

I'm binge watching your HR videos lol! I loved this one, hands down 🙌🏾 I am currently a health science with a concentration in healthcare management. Also, going to speak with my advisor about getting a HR management certification. I was planning on changing my major to communications, but I'm almost done completing my my current major. Plus, I'm looking for entry level jobs to gain experience. Will recruiters frown upon my major? Also, are you apart of SHRM, or any other HR organizations?
Got a bachelors in sociology and did social work and health work and then had adm work with some hr . I then got into Hr assisting and loved it.

I've been looking for internships, and right now I'm fixing up my resume for a class at Oakland University's business school. The current "work experience" I had is not related to human resources. However, I was told before the skills I got can be transferable to HR. When my semester is over, can I send you my resume and get some feedback?

Hi Carmen, I’m currently a cardiac sonographer. I knew I didn’t want to get into this field my last semester but I finished because it was too late and I didn’t want to pay the money back. I hated clinicals and now I dislike the actual career while getting paid good. I’ve been looking into finding jobs that fit my conventional & enterprising personality but I’m afraid of choosing the wrong degree again. Please help! I considered going back for HR or Accounting. I really don’t want to go back to school. I just love talking and explain things to ppl and helping them make the right or better choices. Idk what kind of job that is, but I’m 24 and feel like I’m wasting my life ☹️

I have been applying and I have been getting a lot of rejection on emails it's funny when you said an employer would not hire a graduate with no experience, It breaks my heart. Seriously am not bother about the salary. All I want now is just the experience. Hopefully, God will do a miracle. lol

I’m looking to get into HR but have no experience I’m a ABA case supervisor and I do a lot of training staff and parents. My bachelors is in psychology and my masters is in behavior psych. I’ve been looking into all kinds of HR positions but they all want 2+ yrs of experience 😬

So glad it was helpful! And nope! I had no experience/knowledge in HR when I landed that role, but I did have leadership experience from a prior restaurant job. I was actually convinced at the time that I was going to go to grad school for a doctorate degree & I was unaware of how much that job would help me in the future.

@@jirachi1999rocks it's going well! It was hard to get my foot in the door at first but I managed to with an HR/recruitment internship at an agency. I was luckily offered a permanent role over there, but after a few months I moved on to a new company where I'm doing in-house recruitment, which is something I enjoy a lot more than agency recruitment. I think recruitment is a great place to start especially with a psych degree :)

So glad you’ve found these videos helpful! I was actually laid off at the start of the pandemic and I’m using this time to focus on my other passions. For those first few weeks of working from home, it was a bit difficult to Navigate, but only because the company I worked for wasn’t up to date with technology and there was a huge amount of physical paperwork I had to do.
LinkedIn is tricky & I think with so many companies facing financial constraints due to the pandemic, it may be harder to get responses regarding jobs due to limited staff. I know it’s hard, but be patient, don’t give up, & something great will come along your way 🤍

@@ghold6810 hi! No worries at all! I was able to transfer into the HR community. I’m a people Ops coordinator for a tech company.
From what I’ve learned in my studies and experiences, traditional HR protects the company whereas people operations protects the people within the company. Both under the umbrella of human resources however my personality, skills, and passions directed me more towards a role that empowers people to better themselves rather than to enforce rules and regulations.

So for the grad school part, does that change if I am working/interning while I’m in grad school? I plan on working at least 20 hours a week the whole time so I would have experience of sorts to throw on my resume on top of previous and current jobs I work. Your background is solid and I’m sure you should be fine. However, I suggest that you consider a SHRM-CP. it’s a certification for those who are interested in HR but have minimal to no experience.
As a recent communication graduate companies overlook my resume because I have no experience in HR. I am currently in a HR Management masters program. I know you mentioned not to go to grad school right away, but it seemed like my only option if I wanted to be in this realm of work. How do I get companies to take interest in me?

Oh that's great! In regards to diploma vs. degree, I think it depends on the size/type of company you plan to work for. Bigger companies prefer a degree, whereas smaller companies/non-profits, don't mind a diploma. Also take into consideration the industry you want to work in. My experience in HR is Healthcare heavy and a degree has been mostly preferred.

If you don't have experience in HR, you wouldn't be eligible to take the PHR certification exam. It also wouldn't be necessary since entry level jobs really don't require additional certifications.

Hi! Please don't listen to those people, just because they have a misconception regarding HR or they think HR isn't for them, doesn't mean you won't like it. You're at the age where everyone is going to have an opinion on what career you choose, but the only thing that matters is that YOU are happy with the career that YOU choose. Everyone and everything else is irrelevant. It may be harder for you to land an internship right now, but I would say to give it a try! It's never too early to start looking, if anything you'll be able to network with professionals in the field :)

It wasn’t easy, it took a lot of sacrifices, but I had an end goal that I knew I had to accomplish. All the hard work paid off at the end.

I really love the tip around the 11 minute mark. To get a job in HR just make sure you have experiance in HR first... Yeah this is the problem with getting a job in HR.
Got a masters degree, 5 years admin experiance and I have been told by about 50 employers that to get a job in HR I just need to go and get a job in HR first... like wtf am I meant to do.

University websites have resume self help tools 🔧. For example, they have templates you can reference. Some even write entire guides detailing every part of a resume and what recruiters are looking for.
Edit: You don't have to be a student to access most of these.

HR wasn’t bad, I just wanted other things from life. The best advice I can give you is to not listen to other people. You have to follow your passions/dreams & ultimately you’ll figure out what you like & don’t like.

Wow. I have an MBA and I'd LOVE to make $40K a year. I have experience in low level jobs. Not in HR management. Why would I ask for $70K or $80K now? I think asking for $40K a year is reasonable since high school ONLY grads are making $19 an hour and all they do is push boxes all day long. Live with my parents? They are ARE DEAD lady.
