I've been stopped by the coast guard and marine police several times. They are always very friendly and professional.
I think it's a pain in the ass. They sit at the mouth of the channel where I'm at. Also if you anchor a lot like me then they will come over and inspect you.
Joe Doug do they do it randomly, to everyone, or because they have suspicions?
travcon8 they’re there for a reason, and you’ll be happy to see them when you start sinking
We do our best to keep a good relationship with the community. We only check to see if you're safe having proper gear stowed on your boat's.
I dont know why people give coast guard such a hard time, they do THEIR job to keep us SAFE, and, their MILITARY, keeping the country safe, most people that give them hell, have not served for the country and have no respect for them
oh wow, I clicked on this waiting to see a confrontation. But all I see is my tax dollars at work and a law abiding citizen being courteous. Respect flowing both ways. Amazing, God bless!
Yeah I'm pretty sure it's a boat of of new trainees do a routine check for the new guys to get there training

@Ryan Bentz not only were they training, but It's standard procedures for them to have a minimum of 4 people on board
@Ryan Bentz That's not the only thing they do.
Former Coastie and boarding team member here, that's a typical boating check with a bunch of "Boots" getting their qualifications signed off on.
Al Caponey probably newbies

Same shit as an EMT. 5 people in a emergency room to learn how to take vitals or hook up and ekg

Most of the people who hate coast guard keep fish under the legal limit.
Maybe they were training new coast guards? There were a lot for one boat
I thought the same thing.
min 4 to a ship usually
there is always more space in pirate crews.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Back in the day, the normal boat crew was 3. When LE is the plan of the day, 4 or more. If you think about it, 1 boat driver, another to stay on the boat and "observe" and provide a backup. 2 to board you where one watches the boaters while the other goes over the paperwork and/or searches the vessel. In your case, it appears they acted as "fenders" LOL. Can't have too many fenders.
Normal crew for that boat.
I like the layout of your boat. Clean and functional.
Functional definitely.
clean!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lmao
What model length? I think John said somewhere an older StarCraft?
coast guard: "catch anything"
fishing boat: "Yeah, I caught a coast guard ship. Biggest catch this week"
USCG vet here. Very good procedure by the CG guys. When everyone does what they are supposed to be doing, things go well. Good on everyone.
Thanks for being an absolute gentleman when encountering the team that helps us stay safe and keeps our waters enjoyable for everyone!!
Good to see that the Coast Guard is helping to keep boaters safe on our waters.
People complain about this sort of activity.....
Until they’re sinking.
Phaded But you do have them important cushins on the boat dont you?
Phaded there could be other services and organizations that could save sinking ships too...
@@fringestream990 Negative Nancy why talk!...
If they were sinking, the CG would tell them to call Sea Tow.
Bryon Scheer I’m not the negative one who’s boarding private ships. I’m just saying we can have safe waters without the government
We got jumped by the Coasties saturday as well. Great Crew, very friendly and quick, now I'm good for a year.
Seeing the USCG out on the water is always a welcome sight, I'm more than happy to have them inspect any boat I'm on to double check that it is up to par and safe! Thanks so much USCG for all you do to keep us safe and free!
Amazing. You treat someone with respect and they treat you with respect. My dad taught that to me back in 78. Still works. Hmm.
Never realized we were fishing the same waters until now! Cool!
Great video. Always glad to see the Coast Guard even if they are inspecting my boat. They will go through hell to try to help you if you need it. Thank you Coastie’s, you guys rock.
“Morning John”.... pretty cool... you knew at that point is was going be easy.
You can have a nice cup of shut the fuck up. Fucking tooley.
@Myballsitchsomethingfierce it's an inspection dipshit. It's for his safety and the safety of other boaters. They weren't going out there seeking to cause him trouble, they were trying to prevent it. Quit being such a cynical douche.
@@matthewmorrison8303 I'm with you. Plus, I'm not taking anything someone says too seriously when they go around announcing to whoever will listen that their balls itch something fierce. I think that explains it all....
For those complaining about CG checks, they did one on me when I first got my inflatable pontoon boat. On the ramp the first time i went to put it in the water. They said I needed a whistle or other audible distress signal. OK, got one from my backpacking gear in the car and was good to go. Thanked them for their concern.
Three hours later, with a crab pot over the side (and in use as an anchor) and a crab ring over the other side, a 42 ft sail made a turn about 100 feet from me. And headed directly towards me.... with no forward watch or anyone looking. I was yelling (as were several other people in small boats crabbing around me), one guy was blowing his air horn... And their was no way I was getting the pot and ring trap up to get out of the way.
I guess the idiots heard my whistle and they looked up just in time to cut away. His bow pushed my stern under as he went by. It knocked the sonar unit, both oars, two fishing rods, and the motor over board. But that whistle was what he heard. Thank you CG for reminding me to have one. Five minute safety check? MAY have saved my life. (PS, thank you to REAL boaters and fishermen who dropped everything they were doing to help me get my boat back in order and back to the launch. Also thank you to the CG who responded to the accident. I guess they have the authority to remove an operator's license and they got his right away. And someone in a very nice Boston Whaler pulled my boat up onto his and put me on the boat ramp. Real people doing what they have to to help out. And that is the way we all should be out on the water).
T Rex Well, wouldn't it be better to lose the slightest bit of freedom for a lot of safety?
nope, freedom can not be allowed IF you want everybody and everything to be safe. Freedom carries risk, but guaranteed safety carries a much greater risk (Lack of freedom)
There are completely lawless places in the world, so you could have your freedom if you moved to one of them. You'd also have a shitty life. But hey, as long as you're "free", right.
Freedom is not lawless. Natural laws are respected under freedom. The same can not be said about our current institutions.
We don't have perfect freedom here, we are governed by laws. If you want to live without any government at all, move to Syria.
Love the Coast Guard I wish they were out more often. I work on an Inspected tow vessel and have been boarded a few times and had a good experience and they often do more educating to the crew than inspecting the vessel for subchapter M compliance
Politely doing their job.
You can afford to be polite when you have all the power and all the guns.
@@avasdad3029 Up till 1979, they didn't carry guns on boardings. But remember what is todays Coast Guard's first mission was when it was founded in 1790? Law Enforcement. The Life Saving service, Light House service, etc showed up later on.

Hi John, I had a 23 foot Crownline and got boarded a few times and I, like you was always respectful. I actually appreciate them doing this to help alleviate drunken boaters and other non safe behavior.
John: Thanks for posting this video. It is reminder to all of us to double check our safety gear before we go out on the water. I have no problem with the Coast Guard as they are trying to ensure our safety. If we get into an emergency we need the stuff they are checking to ensure we have!
You believe the safety BS? Really...are you that naive? You are a grown adult...you are responsible for your own safety. This nanny state mentality is destroying this great country that was founded upon independence and self sufficiency.
They are trying to 1. revenue generate 2. look for drugs and other illegal activity. 3. control people's movements 4. safety..if and only if it is self serving for the coast guard . Pull you head out of your a**
Looking to make some money from you. Quota time of the month
Well, Jimmyjack, if you are not equipped to handle an emergency you are a hazard to everyone on the water; including the Coast Guard. I had this shit squared away by the time I was 6, have been boarded more times than I can count, and have never had a negative experience with the Coast Guard or water patrol. I have also conducted two rescues on my own because I was first on the scene. And? I have never tossed myself or a passenger in the water because safety was drilled into me before I was allowed to set foot on Dad's vessel.
Heck! Even when I go to a fishing dock on a local lake the first thing I do is try to track down a throwable life ring and I carry 50 feet of rope in my pack along with a first aid kit and flares. I have used the first aid kit for a few minor injuries but I haven't needed either of the others but I did haul one kid out of the water after he went over the rail. Maybe, if his mother had spent a little quality time with the U.S.C.G. she would have pulled her boy out herself instead of standing there and screaming?
Cheers!
Thus refer to " You are a grown adult...you are responsible for your own safety". Thanks for validating that!
*life jackets worn nobody mourns*
One of the reasons I subscribed is the honesty and respect shown when you were approached by the coast guard or law enforcement. This is the kind of thing that young people need to see. Thank You!
They're awesome guys !!! I have never met an unfriendly or mean officer on the water !!!!!!
It's always good to have the Coastguard around.
The coast guard have a damn nice boat! :)
You're always so respectful and polite, I love that. And almost everyone you're nice to like that is the same way to you.
Thank you for videotaping this. As a retired Coast Guardsman, I'm very proud of our Coasties out there doing their job - particularly in the area of boating safety. This is what really helps in curbing disastrous events in the future! Greatly appreciate your sharing this bit of education on how our boardings are done.
Most respectful and polite guy ever. First time watching your vids but that's an instant subscribe from a fellow fisherman! Great vid and love your attitude towards them
How I wish every encounter with persons or the law could be that easy going, polite and respectful
Nice job sir..professional, respectful and no problems. Nice to see good videos like this.
I usually get boarded once a season by Coast Guard Station Manasquan. The guys and girls are always very professional and just do a quick standard check. Most of the time they allow you to continue towards your marina while they perform their business. I’m glad to know they’re around if I ever had an emergency.
I'm a former merchant marine. The coast guard would board the ferry boat I worked on, to do an inspection of everything, including all of our log books.
I just got into fishing, and being honest I love that they do this! Great way to keep everyone safe.
Oh the reserves are on the job.
And what pretty new uniforms we all have.
Not a paint spot on them.
And apparently no one did the boat checks this morning because we don’t have any mooring lines. 🤣🤣🤣
Even money they run aground at least once before they make it back to the station.
I was in. I could tell you stories all day.
John, thanks for posting this video. It is a helpful reminder about the safety gear that we need to carry on board.
Sounds like swaggersouls lol an older version
Much respect to these guys that are working while we are enjoying our leisure time, keeping the waters safe and when they check for safety devices, many have the attitude that they will be just fine, but never think when they are transporting others, bless these men and women for the job they do.
When that chopper passes over head, knowing they are headed to help those in peril, hats off to these guys.
Yep. It's all about the right attitude on or off the water. Thank you for this video.

If ever in doubt, you can call your local coast guard auxiliary and schedule an inspection. Its completely free and they go over whats required by law (federal) and whats recommended. They even do them for paddle craft.
I like your videos. It is refreshing to see someone who is respectful to authority.
I remember when the Coast Guard performed these inspections at dockside. Now they are bothering people while they’re fishing out on the water.

Nice to see how respectful you are to them. Interesting to see how a boarding goes too!
I didn't know SwaggerSouls liked fishing early
You just get the feeling that its not about saftey, it's about "what can we get you for".
It is about safety. It's called a RBS boarding or Recreational Boating Safety boarding.
The point for older adults is that this just would never happen for no reason. There were very few park police or Coast Guard even around in the 60's to be on patrol. These were open areas free for recreation and free from interference. The vast majority of us were responsible boaters and campers and considered innocent until proven guilty. Just not used to being "checked up on." These things were done at the boat ramp.
Great respect for new park police and CG, but they were much more in the background and had other duties. A shift in society that's hard to explain to a suspicious mind. I kept safety and all other necessary equipment because it could save our lives.
thats literally the best thing I've seen all day, they pull him over and talk about fishing an the weather
The toasty coasties. I spent 6 years in the Navy way back in the 80's. They were the Department of Transportation back then...Now the Dept. of Defense. Thank God for their hard work and especially their skill in rescuing those in distress in the water.
The Coast Guard is in DHS
I Love how when you plunged the throttle the caption system labelled it as [Music] and I can't say it is wrong.
I boat in Maryland and each year get a safety check from the coast guard at the beginning of the season. They issue you a sticker that goes on the left side of the windscreen and the police, coast guard, and DNR rarely bother you because the sticker is visible and they know you are in compliance. They are always polite and professional.
Things can go bad fast on a boat, better to be overprepared. The fire extinguisher is important, it might be for another boater in need.
Good point about the fire extinguisher maybe being needed for someone else.
They use to have events at West Marine where you could take your boat to get the sticker, not sure if they still do or not
Good morning Scott. That was the Coast Guard Auxiliary that performed the Voluntary Safety Check (VSC). Yes, they still do it, and yes it is at no cost to the boater. The VSC decal tells the Active Duty that you have been inspected and your vessel and its equipment complies with all applicable federal and state law. The sticker is not a guarantee that you won't be boarded, but when the CG is out doing random boardings, chances are that they will skip you in favor of a vessel that does not display the sticker. Want a free VSC? Click here wow.uscgaux.info/content.php?unit=V-DEPT&category=i-want-a-vsc
This is a very instructive video in many ways. The protocol behavior the approach and the tone needed was flawless. It is nice Skinner that you showed us the paper. Gives a lot of idea what they are searching for and the things needed for the boat. Thank you so much. I wish that many users gives these videos. They are good examples when we deal with authorities and patrols.
When I was enlisted in the US Coast Guard ,circa 1978, when we boarded freighters we did so with weapons that had no ammunition. Back then we were way under funded and made the most of what we could beg ,borrow, or steal. The amount of ship repairs we bartered from civilians that worked in the Curtis Bay dry dock yard ,for cans of coffee was amazing.
Look, change my mind the coast guard is the most under rated military branch
Coast Guard probably does more actual service to the citizens of the country than any other branch.
cr4zyj4ck This comment is ignorant because the other branches aren’t meant to provide “service to the citizens of the country”. How do you think the Air Force is supposed to help citizens, they’re part is to go out and protect or attack. Not aid citizens.
1000s of CG checks is better than having to pull someone facedown out of the water because they didn’t have the correct safety gear .
John thank you for being sooooo cooool! literally wish all boaters were like this towards our coasties! Best of luck!

I wish they had this in the UK. I've seen some woefully unprepared boaters in the English Channel, one of the busiest seaways on the planet. No lifejackets, no radio, no effin compass even. In fog! I once had to leave my wreck fishing spot to lead some of these ***** back to harbour because, out of sight of land, they didn't even know what direction to steer. The way they were going, in 20 minutes or less, they could have ended up in France, of all places!

Perfect, professional gentleman. This is how you should behave when stopped by Customs Patrol.
Love the old boat! Nice and utilitarian looking.
Really thought they would give you crap about not having a fire extenguisher. I believe in Florida if you have any type of fuel tank it would be required.
Just checked. If its a built in tank or the tank is in an enclosed compartment you have to carry a fire extenguiser in Florida. So what you said is correct!
This can often be avoided by getting a free CG Aux inspection. If you have that current sticker on your boat, you are FAR less likely to be stopped
Awesome interaction from both parties 👏🏼 even learned a few things while watching this video that popped up on my home feed
I was boarded in MN (down a small creek off Lake Vermilion) by an agent in a canoe with a black lab. Looked like just a guy out fishin' with his dog. Nice guy. Chatted for 15 minutes and then left. I have no issue with this.....keeps our waters safe and full of fish.

The Coast Guard don't go looking to meet quotas. They're worth their weight in gold!
Before I joined the Coast Guard I never really understood why we did these kind of checks/boarding but for all the people that don’t know, we do these for the Mariners safety. The whole point is (and god forbid) something does go wrong they are at least half way prepared to survive so we can go out and bring them back alive. Boardings are never malicious, we’re not money grabbing, at the end of the day we want for whoever it is to be safe and get back to dry land with their families.
That's fine and I am thankful for yours and their service. But getting ID from citizens is 4th amendment violation when there's no crime being committed. Plain and simple. I could have sworn that we have the right, as citizens, to travel freely unmolested. No?

Required or not, a fire extinguisher is a really good idea on a motor boat of any type. Things go to hell real quickly with even a small fire on board.
I have a 12 ft folding boat, and I got a summons for not having a fire extinguisher on my boat. I also needed a flag and they even checked the dates on my flares to see if they were expired. I think they let you slide because they knew you from your videos.
I think they were hard on you! I've googled and believe that < 26 feet without a fixed gas tank or enclosed area the fire extinguisher is not required. West Marine has a nice section on requirements that was updated last month. If anyone knows different, please share!
a folding boat? FOLDING? What country are you in? Canada?
Flares are only good for 3 1/2years from when they're made (not from date when you buy them), which is why they check them. Most people probably don't realize their flares are expired.
Andrew Saliba - Yep! It all depends on their mood and vibe they get from you... they will do everything from reading the tags on life preservers to ensure USCG type rating, to check flare markings for USCG approval and expiration, to checking the pressure levels and dates on fire extinguisher, etc. They can get super picky if they want to.
That is the problem, they need to be consistent and professional. When they let one person slide and come down on another regardless of the attitude of either they are wrong. Government should never use their power to humiliate a person. Getting even is never professional.
Well check. Thank you USCG for their service.
