  • A girl almost drowned on the Salt River in May, but thanks to Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Lake Patrol, she was saved. However, as seen in the exclusive bodycam video, the path to get to her, as well as getting out of the river, was blocked by tubers and kayakers.

Hey y’all, my name is Carley and i’m the girl in the video. This was 3 years ago. I’m now 21 so looking back on this is absolutely insane. Thank you all so much for the positive comments . and to everyone calling the cops “pigs” need to get a life. Those “pigs” saved my life. The reason why my brother couldn’t get on the boat was 1.) because he was very intoxicated and could’ve got in the way of the deputies doing their job and 2.) that boat is very tiny. Imagine how my brother would’ve reacted if they allowed him on that boat and saw them perform cpr on me not once, but twice. He would’ve freaked out and most likely would’ve got in the way. So please shush. If it weren’t for the deputies quick response time and fast acting i wouldn’t be here today.

All these guys did a stellar job at their positions and knew what their job was in a multiple person rescue team. Dude is giving her CPR on the boat while they are flying down the river through rafts/kayaks. That takes a lot of trust in the driver which fan boats drive like you're on a patch of ice sliding it's way through the river. Textbook work and most likely saved that girls life. Then the guy who was just giving CPR on/off for 5 minutes just shrugs at the driver after she's lifted from the boat. Like, no big deal.

So he could have been saved but, idk I have tried to see it as it was meant to be as much as I hate it God needed him home. It was the worst day ever for me and my family. @@cliveramsbotty6077 in drowning and near drowning the heart beat is either very slow, non existent or erratic enough to be ineffective . I hope some things have changed since I worked river rescue (white water raft guide) but long ago the adages was "bad CPR is better than NO CPR," CPR on a boat is very difficult, in a wilderness situation, no breathing or heart attacks are usually body recoveries, CPR is to keep circulation going to prolong a life until you can get to better care, for each minute the chances of survival fall around 10% If your outside of the EMS fan, your victims chances of survival is pretty slim in these circumstances, don't get me wrong EVERYBODY will do their level best and even put them selves a risk to TRY, to give the victim the best chance of survival, at the end of which you often don't know how it turned out. and you wonder, those times when YOU KNOW there is nothing to be done, those haunt you forever. When someone DOES beat the odds, that you did your best to stack in their favor, you, as a rescuer cherish those because it helps fight the darkness that builds in you from the ones that don't.

It is not at all too much to ask. Most people who are lifeguards at pools and water parks every summer start in high school. They have to pass CPR courses. To work in a daycare or with most child care programs, which many high school or at least college age students do, they have to (or should have to) know CPR.
I was a lifeguard at 16 in a huge water park in Spring, Tx. I never had to do CPR on anyone. But I performed plenty of rescues. When I was 16, my stepdad fell off of my roof while power washing it. When he stepped down onto the ladder, the ladder fell, and he fell backwards from the roof landing flat, with his head taking the brunt. I was the only one home. There was a young man there working with him who was no older than me. He completely freaked out bless his heart. Had I not had the training I had, I don’t know that I would have known what to do. I went from sound asleep, to thinking my little brother broke a window with a baseball (the ladder crashed through a window) to hearing screaming from the young man. I ran to find my stepdad and thankfully knew what to do. He was barely alive. He passed away the next day. But, while we were together I was able to handle things and do my best to stabilize him. Brain surgery couldn’t save him. It was his time. But, I’m certain, the training I had helped us that day. And I’m certain God was with us.
I have an amazing son with special needs. I’ve had to call paramedics twice
Bc of how bad he chokes. He does not swallow correctly. But, I’ve known what to do every time to help him. He has lung issues. We have devices at night to help him. But, IF he stopped breathing I would know how to help. These are life saving skills. I bring all of this up to just say, YES we should all be trained in school. These are important skills we can all use.

And one last thing; why did that one officer who was performing the compressions, stay on the Airboat (as she was removed), turn to the Pilot and shrug ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ his shoulders? Great observations Anthony. As a paramedic, her breathing MAY have become agonal, but I even doubt that. And I highly doubt she was ever pulseless. The responders had no cardiac monitor and were probably BLS responders at best, and that’s to be expected with the sheriff’s department. Their compressions appear to pretty much amount to painful stimuli, like a sternal rub. She started responding to the compressions so quickly because they freakin’ hurt. I’m not knocking the responders under the circumstances, but I never saw one pulse check, and even if they did, you’d have to be pretty seasoned to feel one bouncing around on that boat. The best thing they had for her was gasoline resulting in a quick transport. Didn’t see a stethoscope or an IV kit. No medical bag. A bag valve mask probably would have been useful for some assisted ventilations.

This didn’t happen that long ago and I’m sure you’re still trying to deal with it. I’m sure you learned a lot that day about the water and the heat and your inner strength to survive. So don’t let the negative things complete strangers post about you and what you should or shouldn’t have done that day affect who you are. None of us were there.
And to the people out in the world, be kind. Stop judging her and her brother or assuming things went on that didn’t. Give the poor girl a chance to absorb all that happened to her. This kind of experience doesn’t go away overnight. Some people develop PTSD from a life and death experience. Just because you have negative thoughts about what you THINK were her choices that day, try and remember that you don’t know all the facts because you were not there. @@SegoMan i know for a fact that if you get off of it immediately and quickly swim to the side pushing it with you...its pretty simple to be out of the way in plenty of time...just flapping your hands without even any effort, sure, hard to move fast, but if they had been able to put someone else before their precious party then they'd do whatever they need to do to make it easier for them to get to someone in need. If it were my family or friends that needed any sort of help, I'd hope people could literally get off their butts and move, so of course I do the same hoping they get to the emergency in time. And you can definitely hear that coming well ahead, and if you're too drunk or stupid enough to not notice, then you shouldn't be in the water and maybe these guys wouldn't have so much to do out there. But, that's just my opinion. Sadly it seems it's a lot to expect people to show consideration for others when they don't want to be bothered by moving a few feet to save this child....so sad how selfish people are.

I’ve been on this river when they drive the airboat down. It’s not as easy as you think to get out of the way. It’s actually quite scary to see an airboat doing 60mph towards you as you’re on a tube.

Lots of positive comments here - fantastic, and shows just how long it can take for help to get to you! As fast as the Air Boat went Code 3, it had to get to her and get back to a boat ramp to transfer her, then the time it took to drive to a local hospital for which she lived and commented here in the thread of her rescue. Which shows how long it can take for Emergency Services to arrive on scene = Take a First Aid class, a CPR class -- you never know when we can help someone live to see another sunset. Great job well done to all involved.

Former SAR here. Captain did great. Flow of the river, momentum carries the boat. Plus he has to keep his team and civilians safe.
Those upset about the brother. Other comments say they returned for him. If they had let him come they would have needed one deputy to supervise him, get a pfd etc etc. would have wasted too much time.
Those criticizing the CPR. It’s a loud moving platform. Focus is on basic lifesaving. It’s either CPR or immobilization.
