HUGE Black Opal Turned into ???!

  • I was asked by a friend of my nephew to make some opal buttons for a "special" shirt. I told him that it could not be done! (I actually told him that I was not going to do it!) I realized that it could be done with relatively inexpensive white opal. He said that he wanted BLACK OPAL Buttons!
    In the video, I take pieces of fairly good opal and make a matched set of buttons out of it. The technique worked and made attractive, durable (for opal) buttons.

    One thought on your buttons. In the military and sometimes for fancy buttons they create buttons that can be removed (not sewn on). You could get the base (removable), then use that as the backing and epoxy the opal onto that. The advantage here is when you wash the shirt/suit you can remove the buttons to prevent damage.

      Im pretty sure theres many ways to make detachable buttons

    • @missingallmymarbles7670
      @missingallmymarbles7670 Před 5 lety +3

      Osmel Raga if both edges of the placket have button holes instead of just one you can connect one fancy button to a plain one (probably a bit larger for safety-it should be too big for the hole) with a thread shank. Think of the setup as something like cuff links but oriented in such a way to lay flat like a regular placket. This way it would only take a minute to remove the fancy buttons for washing and it would be just as fast to reattach them. It’s also possible to sew the buttons to a strip instead of individually to plain buttons which would probably be a more practical idea but that would only work with the one shirt as the button spacing would be fixed.

    • @melslapper9476
      @melslapper9476 Před 5 lety +1

      @@missingallmymarbles7670 hoooo I stumbled upon a good one here! I'll read this carefully on my break after work. Also I really like magnets, there must be a way to incorporate magnets though it will be difficult

    • @missingallmymarbles7670
      @missingallmymarbles7670 Před 5 lety +1

      Osmel Raga magnets may work for some jewelry and purses but remember, they can mess with electronics. Especially if a person is using a medical device, magnets can be EXTREMELY hazardous to one’s health and life. The practicalities of shirt fastening means that you’re very likely to lose magnets (and thus the expensive buttons) and if you tried to leave the magnets in the shirt, it would be impossible to wash it. Guess who has forgotten magnets in their pockets before...they LOVE the drum in the washing machine. Magnets also tend not to stay closed all that well unless they’re extremely strong...maybe not quite as much of an issue for a guy than for a girl but still, it’s something to take into account. In general, unless absolutely needed for a certain special effect there are much simpler and more user friendly options for fastening clothes. They may come in handy for a stripper’s routine for example-much less noisy to rip off than Velcro.
      Edit: lots of time making things for theater, tech, and a lifetime of sewing things. I have a fondness for weird ideas.
