Subtle Flaw = Big Problem in Australian Opal!
This 65.7-carat chunk of seam opal hails from the old Zorba field in Coober Pedy, South Australia. This dazzling stone boasts a spectacular array of bright yellow-green and blue hues. Our goal is to transform this impressive piece into a cabochon, but as I examine the stone, I note a finding that teaches an important opal lesson: a wedge-shaped defect on the edge nearly always indicates an underlying crack in the opal.
Wedge defects are found with similar properties to opal, like flint, chert and chalcedony. In this opal, a crack was present, but a careful approach minimized loss. T

Australian Digit Opal - The Way Precious Opal REALLY forms
zhlédnutí 83KPřed 3 měsíci
The most important aspect of this video is how Australian opal REALLY forms. The old theories are incorrect! The digit pattern in precious opal, particularly notable in Australian opal, is a rare and striking phenomenon characterized by finger-like structures within the gemstone. These structures, resembling fingers or digits, were first documented in a 2013 article in Gems and Gemology by Fren...
The Best Australian Opal You've Never Even Heard Of

In the 1890s, miners in Queensland were primarily focused on mining Pipe Opal and Seam Opal, overlooking Boulder Opal despite knowing how to reveal its color. Pipe Opal, believed by many to be opalized tree roots (root casts), was considered more accessible and lucrative. Unlike other opals, Pipe Opal occasionally displays a distinctive pink play of color, making it unique in the world of opals...

The Wikipedia page has an image of a great piece of opal from Coober Pedy, South Australia. I bought the opal from a miner about 10 years ago but after grinding it a little, I decided to put it aside for when I was better a making cabochons out of opal. Today, I found the opal along with another that I saved back then and I proceeded to cut and polish them The cabochons produced are sensational...

unfortunatly, Hans Gamma died in 2024 (96 years old?!!! Wow) 😔
I don't know. They all looked good to me.
I always love your sarcastic sense of humor. Thank you for another entertaining video. I love all of the final stones. Hizz might not have as much color, but I think she's absolutely gorgeous. I think that a layer of resin would definitely be the way to go with Hondo.
Just FYI Recently many Ethiopian opals have been found to be treated with a polymer impregnation, seemingly in efforts to stabilise the otherwise notably hydrophane material, this treatment isn't widespread, but, when present will greatly reduce or eliminate the previous hydrophaneity entirely making the lick test ultimately unhelpful in discernment. Also, whilst fluorescence and subsequent phosphorescence are quite common in australian white, crystal, and, even some black opals, it should be remembered that there are exceptions, australian opals come in many varieties from many different locations, and, with such variety, it should be noted that some australian opals be they white, crystal, or, black containing higher than average iron concentrations, and, not forgetting the lesser known australian opals of volcanic origins all may show different results under UV tests than their more common sedimentary counterparts.
You would be a cool uncle to have and learn from, i say this with all sincerity, youre the nicest most likeable opal guy on youtube, and i wish you many more years of cutting these wonderful stones, ive always liked gems, plus im born in October so opal is my birth stone.

Doc P., this might be a noob question, and you've likely answered it on one of your many earlier videos (I wish the giveaway weren't already over, tch), but am still going to ask: When it comes to chunks of opal you're grinding to remove the sand, let's say most of the face has revealed a lovely lustrous stone, but some specs of sand remain as at 6:00 minutes on this video. If you didn't necessarily want to grind these remaining sandy bits away by creating a curved cabochon, would it be possible to remove ONLY those sandy bits using, say, a lapidary version of a sphered drill/grinding bit? (The only visual parallel I can think of is when podiatrists use these really targeted drills to sand away corns and calluses 😐). This would mean a pocked surface on the opal of course, and that would detract from its beauty, but am curious as to whether it is possible in theory. Cheers! And I don't mind owning up to this question :P
Most cutters have a dremel-like tool to remove spots of sand, etc. the technique is called “carving,” and some cutters use the Dremel exclusively. As you mentioned, the problem with removing a spot is that you will have an unsightly crater. In a jewelry shop, you will never see opal cabochons with defects like that. So if you are using high-grade opal, it’s best to plan a different shape that avoids a defect like that. Sometimes, unfortunately, there will be a spot like that right in the middle of otherwise beautiful large cabochon, and you end up cutting the thing in half. I don’t cut Opal to sell, and I like large cabochons. Cutters who sell their cabs won’t mind cutting a large Opal into many small cabochons, because they sell more quickly than large ones (because they are less expensive). You might Have to keep a 20 carat opal cabochon for a long time before you find someone can afford to buy it! If you want to see a guy who is an expert at carving, you should check out “Roy’s Rocks.”Roy is a good friend of mine and I send him stones occasionally to cut. Some people send him opals with many defects and he removes them all. Sometimes he is able to produce a completely smooth-surfaced cabochon, but usually he ends up with stones that have more less regularly spaced, indentations, and, believe it or not, these are often extremely beautiful and are certainly something that buyers not wedded to tradition would love to own.

Thanks, April. Hopper is still very cute. Making opal arrowheads is pretty easy if you know how to make arrowheads. Overall, our head making is extremely difficult, but this particular type of approach (which is a shortcut from the regular process) is pretty easy in comparison.

Too bad about the Honduran opal. It really looked promising. Great video and educational as always!
perfect video
If you put a clear coat paint on the Honduran Opal would it help it hold some color? Can you do that with stones , kind of like clear coating wood to bring out the grain?
4:55 you’re welcome

I came for he opal and was rewarded with a gaggle of awesome cats! I am a horse person and think Opal would be a fantastic name for a really cool colored horse. My own horse is a black bay....I bought him already registered with the name Zephyr. Still continuing my arrowhead journey. As a final thought, Hizz reminded me of mother of pearl....gorgeous!
If you have to put your eye on it, you might get whisker tickles, pink eye or a yeast infection in your eyes. 😅
