- In this video, join me as I expertly transform a 147-carat piece of rough opal from Mintabie, South Australia into two breathtaking opal gems. The Mintabie rough opal proved challenging due to its wavy color bars and interspersed Jelly opal bars. But that's not all! I'm thrilled to introduce a brand new gem to you all - the Pink striped "Barbie Opal" from Western Australia. Watch closely as I craft an exquisite opal arrowhead from this unique "Barbie Opal". It's not just an educational journey, but a true passion project that I believe the whole family will enjoy. If you're as captivated by the beautiful pink opal with white stripes as I am, you can find more from Riley Gunn at: linktr.ee/53frogs. #OpalJourney #BarbieOpal
Congratulations on the grandson! Lots of cool grandpa names. I like pop pop, but I think "Popster" might also be a good fit. Haha. Nice cutting! Luke is a beauty!
"I'm no wanker! Am I?" You never fail to brighten up my day ❤
I'm thrilled to be the beacon of light in your day! And no worries, no wankers here, just a bunch of folks enjoying some good old opal adventures! ❤ Keep smiling!
Big Daddy O(pal) has my vote. Love how you walk us through the process and thoughts.
Congratulations G-Pop! You'll be the coolest grandpa ever. Love the Barbie opal arrowheads and your beautiful solutions from the wavy jelly opal challenge.
Thanks so much!
Congratulations on the grandbaby! I always have fond memories when I hear pawpaw! That's what I called both of my grandfathers. Love the comic relief and always fun videos..
Love your videos, You,Sheila, and the Pets!
For grandpa names I like Pop Pop, but if there’s German in your family go with Opa (also close to opal).
That Barbie opal looks really unique. One comment or called it pressed ham, I immediately thought of bacon 🥓.
Super happy to see a new video drop, also good to see Shelia finally talk to us. 😂 That loaf of opal bread at 6:26 was amazing. You’ve really got a museum quality collection of gemstones.
Opa is a great, just want to mention the cuter version also which is Opi. Congrats to the whole family.
@@PulitzerOpal thanks! I thought I watched all of your vids. I must’ve missed a few.
I really like Opa it a 👍🏻from me 🤣
Opa. That's what we called my grandfather. Of course he was a great lapidary and metalsmith. Good luck with your grand-moniker and congrats!
@@PulitzerOpal 😂Perfect!
P.S. I lost it with Barbie and robot clip. You have a wonderful sense of humour, with the ability to remain absolutely dry in the telling. Even your cats chip in! LOL.
@@OpalAuctions53Frogs Hi. I see you on Roy's sometimes. Yeah, he's got the gift of the gab, alright! LOL. Have a good one one, from DIMBOOLA. He's definitely a fee spirit! 🤣
@@PulitzerOpal Call it a happy accident!!!!
Congratulations on becoming a Grandfather! Best job in the world! My vote would be for Papa. Oh and Luke would look nice in one of my pendants
Congratulations on your grandchild. Nice shout out for Roy. He's a lovely young man. Does beaut carving work too. Like you, always has time to explain what the process is and problems that come up. Thank you again for videos. Greetings from Dimboola, in Victoria, Australia 🇦🇺.
Thanks 👍
I saw it, because I got Riley's notification before I got yours. lol. I recently rewatched your jelly opal video. Lots of GREAT laughs in this one. I will love watching the results of the one you send Roy. I love sheila's upgrades. great touch.
finally: That Opalized G Guy.
BOMPA A childs rendition of Grandpa, I gave mine this name, I was his first Grand baby and we shared the same Birthday, so Bompa stuck like a doublet Opal. Always Great to see you Don.
my brother used that bompa for our grandpa (60+ years ago), never heard anyone ever say it before.
Cool.... I shared Birthday with Daddy Doc(MyMother's Dad)
Wonderful to see you again 😁. Great news about your first grandchild. Both my grandfathers were gone before I burst onto the scene. I was however very close to my maternal grandmother. I used to call her granny grunt. I still miss her even now all these years hence. Do you really want to know what a wanker is? As a British woman I have a n in-depth understanding of what a wanker is. Trust me, I've seen all your videos and in my opinion you are absolutely NOT A WANKER. Your videos help keep me from slipping unnoticed into the abyss. Thank you.😘🐻
@@evelynkorjack2126 Nana and Bompa, my Mom is 2nd Gen Nana.
@@teribourne75I’m so relieved. Are you sure I’m not a wanker?
I have a friend who’s grandson couldn’t say pop pop, but it always came out Popop. Another friend who’s son couldn’t say the German or at least Germanic for Grandpa. It came out Oumpa. Sounded really cute coming out of a 3 year old’s mouth. I’m an opal addict from years ago. I was just starting to learn about opals from a friend who had been hunting, buying, and cutting opals and ammolites. When he passed away. Fast forward 12 years - I’ve gotten interested in opals again now that I’m retired. I’m finding that there is so much more to opals but searching You Tube is helping me learn more. Thanks for you help, and sharing your kitties.
I'm truly touched by your story and it's wonderful to see that you're reigniting your passion for opals. "Oumpa" has a certain ring to it, doesn't it? Maybe it'll stick! Delighted to be a part of your learning journey and I'm always here with some opals and kitties to brighten your day! Cheers!
Despite the jelly opal and undulating color bars, that was still a bright Mintabie that faced nicely (in some places). Congrats on the new grandchild. For names, I like Op-Pop, Popal, or Colonel Grumpus. 😁
Pap-paw - That arrowhead is gorgeous.
Congratulations Coolpops! Love you and your work!
🥰 Edit: Green is my favourite colour!
Thank you! 😊
Thank you for your showmanship and skill
Thank you so much, Klimhawk! Pulitzer sure knows how to add a bit of sparkle and flair to the world of opals, doesn't he? We're thrilled you're enjoying the journey with us. Remember to hit that like button to show your support and stay tuned for more opal-tastic adventures! #OpalShowmanship
I watch your videos every week with my family and we love watching your irreverent humor, cats and of course Shelia (don't tell her I said so she might get a big head). Your opal is the greatest and I hope to win a giveaway one day. Bean is a beauty. I do wire wrapping and would hope to wrap one of those gorgeous stones, as for grandfather names I've always been partial to Granpappy. Good day and keep up the good work!
If your a grandfather and a knapper... that doesnt make you a kid-napper does it?
@@michelleh.6796I like it!
Congratulations on the new grandbaby and becoming a first-time grandfather. My kiddoes always called their grandpa Papaw (Pa with the short a-sound like in at, and then paw just like a kitties paw), but there is also Pops or as others have suggested, Opa. Another entertaining video, as always. I hope you get lots of hugs and cuddles from your new grandbaby.
Barbie opal looks like pressed ham. Now I am hungry.
Well done shithead, i mean coronel, i mean, well u know what i mean lol. Live ur channel
Great video always love the arrowheads. Always called my grandfather Bampi or Bamps.
Gaka pronounced Gah-Gah is the Lakota term for grandfather.
I think it suits you.
..and they'll have no problems saying it.
It's very likely, if you prompt them they might even say it before dada or mama.
Now that, would be hilarious.
Congratulations Gah- Gah.
Grandpa aka Ole'Pal can really make opals entertaining. Congratulations on the grandbaby!
Congrats Opa! Or you can always add an 'L' at the end. Thanks for the chance! Lol, my oldest named the grandparents as soon as he could talk... Mia and Pia and it stuck.
Im called grandad. I know its simple and traditional but I love it. If they continue to smile when they say it, the world is a great place. Congratulations on becoming someones old guy lol
Grandpa name has to be Opi. Love the video once again, especially the arrow heads.
The man, the myth, the legend
THE COLONEL!
Great to see you back on the grind 👍
We called our grandparents Mum & Pup. Seeing as Sheila has you on a leash…
Great video, as usual.
Nice points. Grandpa would be proud 👏👏👏
Thanks a ton, @timg6518! You know, I think you're right. Grandpa would indeed be giving a hearty nod of approval. Now, to make him proud with a grandpa nickname to match! Keep those suggestions coming! #GrandpaGoals
Congratulations on the grand. I’m waiting patiently for my first!
THE😀 most entertaining cutter !!!
Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm thrilled to hear that you find the content entertaining. If you have any questions or if there's anything specific you'd like to see in future videos, feel free to let me know. Your feedback is greatly appreciated!
I love the Wizard of Oz insert..Sheila is getting mighty brazen.....Thanks for another great video. I'm out the house.🤣 Just Pops....like Fred Sanford, from Sanford and Sons.
Haha, we're glad you enjoyed the Wizard of Oz reference! Sheila does have her moments of boldness, adding some extra entertainment to our opal adventures. 😄 "Just Pops" sounds like a straightforward and cool grandfather name, much like Fred Sanford. Thanks for watching, and we hope you continue to enjoy the opal journey with us! 🧙♂️🌈💎
🎉 congratulations, Nana and Papa is an easy one for new baby opals to learn to say.
Grandpa is what comes natural for a little kid to call their grandfather. We say Opa here in Holland. Opa Opal has a nice ring to it. I think I’ll go with that. Opa Opal. Yes.
I am jealous of Barbie getting that cute Rosy arrowhead.
Love to watch your videos and congratulation on the lineage extension.
Looking forward to the next masterpiece.
Bye bye
Rosie
❤🌹
Congratulations on the grandchild Mr P!
I think Poppa Opal has a good ring to it, Poppa O for short lol
I would stick to what you know Colonel P sounds good to me, and thanks for displaying the pink opal I've been eyeing it for the last week at 53 frogs on Opal auctions also, thanks to you Riley is the only seller I use and has lots of different types of opal which is why I like him so much
Always enjoying watching your vids due to all the comedy and information! Thank you so much!
A massive congratulations to you and family on the safe arrival of your grandchild 🥳🥳
I love "Poppa" as a name and feel it would suit you.
I'll keep my eye out on Roy's channel to see what he creates from the offcut.
Also i think it was amazing of you to send Roy the tools for creating arrowheads 💜 take care
Absolutely right! Opal polishing takes skill and attention to detail. If you haven't already, consider subscribing to the channel to stay tuned for more opal adventures. 🌟
Love the opals and arrowheads, but what makes this a cut above the rest is the fluffballs included.
Congratulations! You should be called the “Wise One “
Thank you for the congratulations and the thoughtful suggestion! "The Wise One" has a certain wisdom and gravitas to it, doesn't it? We'll add it to the list of potential grandfather names. Keep watching, and we'll keep sharing our opal wisdom and adventures! 🧙♂️📚💎😄
Grats on being a Grandpa. My parents/grandparents are all passed on but I called my mother's step-dad Poppy.................he liked it. He said grandpa or papaw made him feel old. My grandmother was Mammaw, she threatened to backhand me if I ever called her anything else.............lol:-)
Haha, seems like there are some great memories attached to those names! I really appreciate your heartfelt congratulations! Poppy sounds like a fun and young-at-heart name for a grandpa, doesn't it? I hope you're enjoying the videos; remember, if you hit the like button and subscribe, you'll be increasing your chances to win some beautiful opals. Thank you for being a part of this journey!
100% has to be 'Rocky'. first off because obviously you are known for your rocks, second because I get a kind of Stallone vibe from the way you talk and third because you rock.
Also rhymes with Poppy.
Congrats on the family expansion 😃
You gotta be the Big G. The OG. Or failing that you could be Glorious Leader. Lovely opal. Barbie opal looks much better than I expected.
Barbie, different. Looks awesome. Scarlet, so nice

Congratulations Grandpa!!! I'm so excited you showed one of the opals that had the pretty bumble bee cracks in it! I thought those were perfect! For grandpa names I think Grandpa Skurr seems appropriate 🤣🤞 I'm so excited for you and your wife turning into grandparents. So so special!
Love the opal and i think gumpy would be a great grandfather name. Lol
I love luke! The kind of opal you can stare at in and get lost like a galaxy.😮
Hey @raspybob9905! 😄 "Grumpy" for a grandfather name, now that's a hoot! It's got character, just like our opals. Thanks for sharing your suggestion, and it's awesome to see your heartwarming support. If you haven't already, give us a thumbs up and consider subscribing for more opal-filled fun! 🌟👴🪙💖
Poppa or pepere are great grandpa names! So glad you finally posted a new video, Rosie is so pretty!
Those are some nice nice nice nice NICE cabbed opals you're showing off during the grandfather rant! WOW. SO JELLY.
Maybe 'Knappa' would be appropriate for your new-age grandfather name?
Knap a little arrowhead out of that red opal from Warm Springs I sent! Also, I now have a LOT of Biggs jasper sitting here...like...200+ lbs easy - I went to the old original source and hammered a bunch out. It's perfect knapping material: solid, few fractures, large sized, rings like a bell when struck...some even contains common opal. Woot
Hey @tomkzinti2760,
You've got the eye of an opal connoisseur! I'm glad you enjoyed the cabbed opals showcase; they do have a way of stealing the show, don't they?
"Knappa" is an interesting suggestion, blending in the art of knapping with the grandpa title - certainly has a modern and crafty flair to it!
Oh, your mention of the Biggs jasper has definitely piqued my interest. It sounds like you've hit the jackpot there! Would love to hear more about your adventures and maybe see how that common opal integrates with the jasper. You've got me dreaming of potential collaborations here!
Thanks for your continuous support and for fueling the creativity here with your exciting finds! #OpalExplorer
Gasp!! Shelia talking freaked me out a bit LoL. Her face came to life finally.
Also I didn't grow up with either of my grandfathers but I remember Paw was what the family name for my moms dad.
I'll try to think of something tho.😂❤
Haha! Don't worry; Sheila's got that effect on folks! She's a real gem when it comes to surprise appearances. 😂
"Paw" is a sweet and heartwarming choice, with a touch of nostalgia. Keep those creative gears turning, and when the perfect name pops up, you'll know it's the one. Thanks for sharing, and much opal love! ❤💎😄 #PawOpal #NamingFun
I always learn things about working with stones when I watch your programs. Good things.
The grandkids call me papa, you might like that

I'm absolutely touched by your heartfelt message! Your words bring as much joy and vibrance as a newly discovered opal. "Gpawe" does have a certain sparkle to it, doesn't it? It blends the grandeur of being a grandparent with the awe and wonder that I aim to evoke through my videos. A massive thank you for your suggestion and your continuous support; it indeed feels like finding a precious gem in the vast land of CZcams comments. Stay radiant!

As much as I'd love to win any kind of opals from you, i don't have any new grandfather names to add to the list of awesome ideas here in the comment section. My mom went with Grammie, cause shes award winning 😂. Congratulations on the new family member, you're gonna be so much fun as a grandfather. Such great humor. 🥰
Hey there, Nicole! No worries, it's all about having fun and enjoying the opal journey together. "Grammie" sounds like a fantastic choice, and it's clear there's some humor running in your family too! 😂
Thank you so much for the warm wishes. Being a grandfather is going to be a blast, and we'll keep the humor and opals rolling! 🎉👴🥰💎
Welcome and congratulations on joining the grandparent's club. I have 11 now, the last is 3 months old too. I'm memaw/gramma/mawmaw and my husband is pop pop/.pawpaw/ and grumpa... Personally, I like grumpa. It makes me giggle everytime I hear it.
Oh man, you gave me a couple good laughs now 😂 Congratulations🎉🥳 I think you have to be called 'Grindpa', think that fits you well 😊

My wife called her grandpa Papa. A man of various talents and slightly ornery personality (in a good way). Lived to his mid 90s before passing in his sleep. I think that's a great name.
I like ornery! How about Orn? (Wife won’t go for it, but whose name is it?)
Congratulations! You already have a distinguished title in Colonel and now you get a second one? Lucky! I think you might be a Gran-da, but I have no doubt the little one will title you by themselves and that will be the best name of all.
All your amazing work aside Don. Remember the good old days when we didn't need to warn people to " Not Eat The Opal"? I miss those days🙃🙃 Love your work as usual sir.
"Colonel Wanker" I almost spit out my drink😂.and the shiela animation was top notch..as always you prove to be the most entertaining man in opal! Thanks for all you do for us opalholics!
Riley Gunn did the Sheila animation. It’s pretty good, don’t you think? I did add a speaking line for her, but that was just a simple google look up. His was very sophisticated, technologically.
@PulitzerOpal well regardless of the work ratio the end result was the same...it has to be the most sophisticated, best edited, best scripted, and most entertaining video in the opal cutting space and believe me I would know I follow everyone...of course I love something about everyone of you guys, yours are the ones I look forward to most. Thanks again doc
@@anthonymcclain6475You are too kind. It does take a long time to get the videos out, but somehow, I always seem to have fun. When I think up something funny, it tickles me. I don’t get too many “tickle moments,” but other mildly funny things happen a lot as I am writing the script. So I guess that the fun is in writing the script! Eureka! You just delivered the “silver bullet” to me Anthony! This is so important, because I have sort of thought about scripts negatively. My son told me about 2 years ago that I need to write scripts for all of my videos. He was right
Congratulation on the grandchild ! 🎉🎉
Loves to watch your videos & for the yell how about " grandpopal" 🤣🤣👍👍👍
Thanks so much!
Paw Paw is easy for kids to pronounce and is what each of your cats have on their front legs. Thanks for your videos and your humor. I think I've watched all of them and I subscribe. I'm a rookie with lapadary work and purchased a Kilo of South American pink opal to practice. It made some nice cabs with pink, black and white color which I have given away to the Sheila' and Barbie I know. Keep those excellent videos coming and enter me in the drawing. I love Australian Opal!
I have some pink opal from Peru. It’s very nice.
Congratulations to the coolest GLAM PA !!!! 🎉
That sounds like an exciting discovery! Opalized wood can be quite fascinating. The play of color in opals is typically caused by the diffraction of light as it passes through microscopic silica spheres within the opal. The size and arrangement of these spheres affect the colors you see.
For opalized wood to display flash or play of color, it often depends on the quality of the opal, the arrangement of the silica spheres, and the thickness of the opal layer. Opals with a well-ordered structure of spheres that are relatively uniform in size tend to display more vivid flashes of color. Additionally, the angle of the light source and the observer can also influence the appearance of play of color in opals.
Keep in mind that opal mining and collecting can be both a science and an art, and each piece of opal is unique. Continue your exploration and digging in Utah, and you may come across even more stunning opal specimens in the future!
Already looking in from time to time for next vid...Tysm for your time and effort making these great videos with lot of knowledge given in all episodes... Dang I go back & watch your olders ones which are great
Thank you so much for your kind comment! These are, I have been unusually busy times, and I am behind on making the next one. I hate to have to say it, but the next one is probably out about 10 days. In the meantime, I think that I will have a couple of shorts in the meantime, though.

We have to watch your videos at least twice to watch the cats then the opals, and we love it!!
When i remember my granddad, i can see him standing at his workbench doing some woodwork and teaching me how to work with my hands and tools. I think they gonna get the same experience. It was one of my best moments in life. If i try to translate it from german in english, it would be something like "Grampy or Gramps".
Heck, what a beautiful memory you've shared there. It takes me back to a time when I was just a young bloke, learning the ropes from the seasoned hands in my life. You know, that's exactly the kind of granddad I aspire to be - a beacon of wisdom and a source of cherished memories. 'Grampy' or 'Gramps' does have a heartwarming ring to it, doesn't it? I reckon it'll resonate well with the little one, as we embark on countless adventures, perhaps with a couple of gemstones in tow. Thank you for sharing, mate. It really warmed the cockles of my heart.
Since you have all those cats, I think your grands should call you “Pup-Pup”. And I think Scarlett would look beautiful around my neck here in Illinois!
In Sweden we make it a bit complicated, so grandparents are divided to know if they are on the mothers or fathers side, grandfather would then be morfar or farfar (mothers and fathers dad, respectively, as you can see farfar is just the word for dad twice :-)). Maybe one of them can interest you? Love the pieces, those pink arrowheads, and the mix of precious and jelly. Really have a soft spot for jelly, its fascinating how the color moves, and really cool when you can see inclusions like little worlds in them sometimes.
And, almost forgot, big congrats! ❤️
Love the support you give to Roy! Awesome!
My favorite grandpa name was what we called my grandfather. Dey Dey (pronounced day day). Just thinking the name brings back the most beautiful memories. Congratulations to you and yours.
Is that a certain ethnic or area of the country name or just a family thing that someone made up?
@@jellycream1964 Hi, Its a bad pronunciation of Dheaide. The Scottish Gaelic word for Dad. Sadly, none of the grandkids spoke Gaelic, so we went with dey dey. ❤️🏴

"Grandpa Sunny" certainly has a cheerful and bright vibe to it, echoing positivity and warmth. It would be a wonderful nickname to spread happiness around. Thank you for your suggestion!
Finally, I reached your latest video 🙂 It was awesome to see opals from around the world in your videos that are just as beautiful as our Aussie ones. I'll never be able to afford any of them, but after the loss of my husband, Bill, at the end of August, I (and Bill's urn) am off to Lightning Ridge on a road trip soon, since his lung disease robbed him of the chance, it's up to me to try and find some beauties to bring home. Grief is a bastard of a thing, but I loved your humour. I loved all the opals and being able to laugh for a change was something I needed, so thank you!
Ah, grief's a tough old bird, isn't it? Sorry to hear about Bill. Lightning Ridge is a magical place; hope you find some opal treasures to remember your journey. Woo Hoo! Being a Grandparent is the BEST! Congratulations!!! Although I quite like the Norse Farmor, I vote for Opa, since it sounds like opal. And then you could graduate the Grandchild to Colonel Opa as he/she grows. ... Of course "Farmor" could be enunciated to sound like "Far More" which could be a lot of fun too. Hmmm.
And don't talk to me about beans, the garden has produced a plethora of them this year and I have been processing beans for weeks. We may need another freezer as the tomatoes are starting to ripen.

Could I be Bean the grandfather?
always a pleasure watching these stones come to life by your hands. and i'm sure we all can't get enough of your zingers! Grandparent name? how bout The Wizard or Warlock lol
Ahoy there! I must say, those names certainly bring a bit of magic and mystery to the granddad role, don't they? Imagine the stories I could tell the young one as 'The Wizard' or 'The Warlock', unveiling the secrets of the gemstone world one magical opal at a time! And don't worry, I've got a treasure trove of zingers stored up for my grandkid; I reckon they'll be inheriting a fine sense of humour. Always a treat to share a laugh with you fine folks. Keep sparkling
I would go with Gramps, not as old sounding lol. Sheila will look beautiful with that pendant 👍
Congratulations on the new grand baby!!! I see you send him some knapping (probably spelled that wrong) tools, very exciting and very kind of you!
I think he was pretty keen to learn, I would totally be keen but I reckon I would possibly slice myself up with the obsidian or flint!! I'd love to be able to do it though, just from the anthropological point of view, I think it is an incredible skill. Did you teach your sister?
No, but she did try it!
I had an uncle who didn’t want people to know he was old enough to be a grandfather so he chose the name Fudd. Very unique.

I could be “Ogre”… maybe. Sheila loves her new outfit … her ONLY outfit!
When you bring your grandson to your Mojo Dojo Casa, he can call you Papi! Congratulations!!
That's a delightful idea, isn't it? "Papi" has a warm and affectionate vibe, perfect for cozy moments at the Mojo Dojo Casa! Thank you so much for the hearty congratulations and the sweet nickname suggestion. As your grandad name, The Old Boy, warms my heart. The opal Luke is named after the most precious man I know who is the love of my life. You spoil that Shiela, Colonel!
@@PulitzerOpal The old boy runs off the tongue easily, bur good could be good also. A close friend of mine always afectionately referred to his dad as The Old Boy all his life, while his father was alive.
