1400 ct Opal BRICK

- In this video, I take 1400 carats of fine Coober Pedy opal with distinct black opal and white opal layers and make some amazing cabochons with it. The material is very unusual, in that the black opal very much resembles that seen from Lightning Ridge. Opal is a gemstone made of silica whose molecues are arranged in small groups with a round shape. The alignment of the silica "balls" is what determines if the opal wil have color (gem opal - gemstone) or have no color (common opal or "potch").
The Opal itself is fantastic but then adding on pet videos and jokes makes it top tier
Is it me or did that arrow head take longer then usual?? Man the skill u have in your hands is amazing. Very jealous I don’t have the skill or a trade like yours. I’m just a lowly bartender
That’s white Opal came out brilliant!!! From what looked like garbage white stone, smh!! Amazing
Cute ginger furfolk!
Beautiful opals
Wow them off cuts look amazing. Well done
I will never get bored of opal cutting, it's always so much fun to see the colors or pattterns that reveal themselves. Thank you for these videos and keep it up!
I absolutely love the energy of your videos. Putting your sweet kitties side by side while you are cutting is great, and I love the whimsical way you describe your treasures. Thanks for your efforts!
Hey bro you got a scammer in the comments pretending to be you , just letting you know . Check my comment in the main comment section. I left it there without reporting it so you can screenshot it and put a community post about it. Honestly man I know you do this for fun but scammers are taking advantage of your good work . You might need a few moderators because I just reported like 50 scam messages .
@@BI-11y_TheStormTrooper aww man! I got so excited when I got the comment! Thanks for alerting everyone 👍
I just got a message today so it is still going on!!! Bummer!!
Watching this from my dugout in Coober Pedy. I'm a Tour guide here and could only dream of finding gems like these. Thank you for taking Australia's national gemstone and presenting them to the world.
My birthstone is sooo beautiful!! Especially in the hands of one who shapes the stone in such an educated manner.. thank you for the video.
I've never seen an arrowhead made of opal before. They look incredible! I also like that you used all the pieces and made some abstract opal. Makes me happy too see all of the stone going to use. It's all beautiful!
I'm glad you ended up leaving some with that beautiful marble look. Before you made the first cut I was thinking, it looked pretty like it was. Everything was stunning in the end!
I was so amazed by how much pieces you got out of that. I never owned any Opal but I love it. It’s my favorite stone by far. I do own some fake jewelry with fake opal but it is still beautiful!
Hopper and Touchy almost stole the show … such cuteness! Love watching you work! I definitely have an affinity for Opals being that it’s my birthstone ♎️
Watching you work brings back fond memories of my dad working at his jewelers bench for hours at a time designing beautiful jewelry. He was taken to early and I miss him dearly. Thank you for bringing back some of my fondest memories!!
to me, personally, the offcuts are the best pieces. I'm much more interested in how the stone grew, and what its different layers are than to just have one flawless opal face. I like it when there's inclusions and sand and potch around, so seeing you took good care of the offcuts warmed my heart a little. They might not look the prettiest, but they are definitely the most interesting pieces in my opinion.
I’m still in awe of how well that arrowhead came out! You never let me down with your videos. Thank you for sharing your talent with us!😊
@Paige Jr was this a real reply?
No it’s a scam! I got one too!
Always love seeing you make arrowheads, the sound is so satisfying and the results are always gorgeous!
Agreed. The sound is so nice
The white opal and abstract pieces are absolutely beautiful.
I worked on the sheep and fruit farms in east Australia in the early 90s, doing everything from shearer's cook, and picking oranges in blistering heat, to pulling dags off shorn fleece. Before returning to Scotland I used my earnings to buy 3 beautiful opals. They weren't perfect but they made every moment of every sh*tty job I did worthwhile.
One opal I had set in a silver ring, the other set in a bead worn in the dreadlocks of my son's late father. All 3 are now gone. Stolen, in some form or another, along the way. Tbh, I don't blame the folk who took them as I think that's the magic and allure of the opal. I reckon people are willing to do anything to own them. I know I was.
"Abstract Opal Art" 😂
That is so good. Love the terminology, and love all your videos. Thanks for bringing some sunshine, laughter, and awesome stones to all our lives.
Always looking forward to the next video(s) 👍💖
Absolutely love this content, your work is amazing, and these stones are breathtaking! I always thought it would be cool to go out and dig for opals but honestly this seems more my speed, thanks.
Opals have always been my favorite gems, there’s something about them that just stands out from every other gemstone, I think that’s mostly because they’re all different in their own way

Congratulations to the winners. Dare I say, WOW on that hunk of burning opal. I like the thought process on where and why to cut. The finished product was really beautiful. Big karat count and big color, a great combination. Thanks for sharing. Be happy, safe and stay healthy 😷⚒
Wow the abstract bits are the best. Some black, some white, some inclusions. Its like a bit of everything in the natural opal world
Your work is fantastic and so entertaining. I’m truly amazed at how beautiful some of the pieces are. Please keep up the videos 👍😁
The origginal stones looked promising, and the final cuts, with your eye and skill, did not let us down. All very lovely, and the white arrowhead is simply stunning. Nice work Colonel.
They were all gorgeous in their own right, but Duke and Daniel were glorious. To be honest, I even find white opal to be absolutely stunning, especially in the right setting. I don't have the ability to cut opals myself, but hopefully one day I will have the space and the funds to do so. :) (I also love seeing the kitty clips. Thank you.)
Don't wait!
I've cut many gorgeous Opals using sandpaper [wet-dry type, black grit] and 'Pop-sicle' sticks for dops!
From two small parcels ($500 and $800; "53 Frogs" are the best!) I managed 9 gems and three 'specimens', averaging about 1.2 carats each.
Most were white to clear crystal, two blacks (green + blue pinfire and blue-green floral) and a script/dendrite specimen!
The process:
120 grit to rough in the shape, 200 or so to smooth refine the shape down.
400, 600, 1000 grit papers in turns to get ready for polishing, refine the surface.
1500, 2000, 3000 papers for final polish...work clean!
You don't want 400 grit 'sand' showing up in your final polishing cloth!
Yes, it is mind-numbingly slow using little bits of sandpaper, but it's also very hard to mess up when cutting is this slow!
Always, always, always cut/polish wet!
I used Super-glue as dop-stick adhesive...bad choice as it 'cratered' the the back of the Opal on removal!
Old-school red 'sealing wax' if you can't find the proper green 'dop wax'...hot-glue works, but is not very water resistant.
Waiting for the 'right tools' is all good, but try one small 'fun parcel' with sandpaper...who knows what you'll discover?
Your inspirational words to Sarah will give more than just her a start, thanks.
@@pirobot668betaThank you. It's nice to know that you can start out with such minimal tools. The only hurdle now is the cost of the stones. I'm a mom of 2 and taking care of a third and, at least at the moment, living paycheck to paycheck, though my kids are all teens now, so...
@@sarahfisher6801 No worries!
Find some glass marbles with 'cats eyes' and a hammer.
Break a marble, and cut a perfect high-dome oval or cushion-cut from the biggest shard!
Glue them onto pop-sicle sticks, get yer Papers of Sanding and teach your self how to cut Opals!
Soda glass (most common mass produced) is a bit harder than Opal, but it cuts and polishes pretty much the same.
If the marble shard has an internal pattern, 'expose' it in the high dome.
This will give you a feel for 'facing' a stone so the cut reveals the best aspects of the pattern.
Once you can cut 'perfect domes' of your choosing, Oregon or Mexican Opal (less expensive than Australian, cuts nicely) would be a natural progression.
It is a serious investment, getting the Opal roughs.
But that don't mean you have to wait to learn the skills!
@@pirobot668beta Thank you for the information and the great tips. 😊
It's not hard to understand what Sheila sees in you... funny, talented, obsessed with cats, and a philanthropist! Thanks for being all of those things! The world is better with you in it, Sir 👍
@@PulitzerOpal I'm thankful for your generosity and I'm sure someone will be very happy about your opal collection someday 😊 My father in law says he's an antique American knife trader, but he's really a collector (hardly any knives leave his collection lol), so I understand your opal addiction 😁
I always look forward to the next video! You got me hooked on Riley's site too. He's a class act. I'm also obsessed with the striping in this arrowhead - just stunning. Thank you so much for sharing your talent and adorable ginger kitties!
I'm so happy I found your channel, which I discovered at your last episode. I've caught up on some prior episodes and I've been looking forward to this one. It didn't disappoint. The finished opals were gorgeous. Watching you make arrowheads is fascinating. How long does it take you to finish one in real time? Slash is beautiful. (so are Hopper and Touchy 😼😺)
I love your sense of humor! Thanks for including Hopper and Touchy. :)
These videos are always super entertaining, its so calming watching you work with such beautiful stones . Would honestly love to have anyone of those stoned . The person who does get it will be soooo happy.
I’ve been following you since I was 18 I’m 26 now I simply love your Contant You’ve taught me so much about opals it’s one of my favorite stones of all time❤
I love your dry humor almost as much as the opals you cut!
Love your videos, the more I learn about opal the more I fall in love with this stone. Cheers
Im so in love with opals. Herbert won an absolute gem!
I just started getting into Opal....my first rock collection ever. Great videos!
Hi, I am amazed by your work and especially the names your have given your pieces. It makes them take on a new life of their own after you masterfully shape them. My wife's birthstone is opal and she was floored when I showed your video. We are now subscribed to your channel, looking forward to future works of art. Thank you for sharing sir!
I really love watching you work. ❤️ Your videos are both entertaining and informative, and... cats, too! 🥰 I especially love the opal arrowheads, as they will always remind me of my Daddy. He loved hunting arrowheads and artifacts here in South Carolina. My best childhood memories.... ❤️
Your videos are always a treat. There's something about your opal cutting that's both entertaining and super relaxing, something hard to find. Beautiful job as always and loved seeing the cats.
It his awesome sense of humor
I really enjoy your witty dad humor, stunning cats...oh...and your expert knowledge and skill working with opal. Thank you for sharing these with us and adding a little brightness to our days.
The colors and patterns inside these Opals are all beauty's. Anyone who gets one of these should count themselves lucky!
I have never had opal and a chance to have any of the beautiful and unique stones would be a dream come true. Thanks for the great video.
The way you dive right into the cutting and knapping of these stones makes me hold my breath! It would take forever for me to make the choices of where to cut. You make such risky business look fun and easy, but then that's why we come here to watch you do it.
Each piece is a magnificently beautiful masterpiece, a work of art co-created by GOD and you. What a team!
Opal is my favourite stone. The way it can encapsulate sea creatures and fossils, the way it can penetrate big egg shaped boulders of iron stone, or just fill long slices or fissures in the country rock. Where it will lie in darkness only to be birthed with every imaginable colour as soon as the light touches it. Usually when some miner comes and hard works it out of the ground. Great video.
Loved this one, and the arrowheads always get me going! They're like something a fairy would use!
I'm absolutely in Love with this channel!!! I've been I to opal for many years and I could spend ALL DAY watching this channel!!!!
Opal was the fist piece of jewelry i bought with my own money when i was a kid. It was a tear drop necklace. It broke one day without me knowing! I don't know much, if anything, about opal. I just know I really like it! I learned quite a bit after watching this! Thank you for sharing!
Those stones are stunning! I love watching you work them. Thank you!!!
So glad we could finally see Sheila's beautiful smile but it's no wonder considering the opal in today's video!
Unbelievable cutting!
Your stones from the largest gems to the opal flakes to the display pieces are lovely.
The only thing better than your humor in these videos is your talent. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us all and keeping me laughing while you're at it.
So happy I looked up gems and opal in Wyoming, not sure I would have come across your page. Beautiful work and what amazing giveaway treasures.
Thank you so much for the reminder to your channel. I so love watching you find the gem inside ♥
Amazing to get such a large opal to start with and then get different types of finished opals from it! Enjoying the cats too.
I enjoy the way you walk through step by step. Also explaining the safety of what you are doing. Fur babies and opals are just an added bonus.
How absolutely beautiful. My mom loved Opal she'd have cherished one of those Black opal. Stunning, thank you!
Beautiful stones but Sheila' smile....priceless!
I loved them all so much. I even like the rough cuts. The imperfections just seem to add to the beauty.
Learning some good stuff about my birthstone. You’ve got a nice touch with the commentary- hilarious! Beautiful work. Thanks for sharing.
Watching you shape Slash was amazingly hypnotic
Love watching his channel. His goofy sense of humor cracks me up. Oh, and the opal looks amazing.
So cool watching an arrowhead be formed!!! And that little computer vacuum is a genius idea...
Fun, fun, fun as always. So sweet of Hopper to lick in sync with your polishing.
Your one of my favorite people to watch working.
Nice opal. Even nicer to see Sheila at the end. Beautiful smile! Not creepy at all.
That dry sense of humor kills me! Plus cats 😍
Really enjoyed your commentary while educating. Love the vivid colors.
That is pretty darn cool.I am glad you didn't butcher the imperfect ones, but made them shine as they are.
It’s only a matter of time…before I am blessed with one of your opals! Thank you:)
I love watching your "pods". Opals should be more valuable than diamonds if for no other reason than the adventure of uncovering the mystery of what is really there. Beautiful colors, patterns and abstract art!
My wife and I really enjoy watching you turn the stones into beautiful pieces of art. Thank you for sharing your skills.
The color in those Opal pieces are stunning 😍!!!
Looking at those large rough pieces I'd have no idea all that was inside. I guess that's the skill that comes with experience.
I finally joined a lapidary club so I have access to all the machines. I can't wait to start cutting stones for myself.
And, Love the addition of the kitties. The YT algorithm does love kitties.
Beautiful Opals & Beautiful work!!! Thank you for sharing with us all! I would be proud to own ANY of them! Amazing! Bravo Sir!!! 👏
I'm here for Hopper the cat and his terrific cat performances!
These are so beautiful. I can believe how many different looks come from one stone. You're a master, for sure.
Not gonna lie, my favorite part of your videos is when you are making arrow heads, the jokes, Final stones, and Cat Shenanigans are a close second
Absolutely amazing coloured collection of Opal
That red flaked opal is sooooo amazing!!!! Beautiful
I’m glad I found your channel! My wife’s favorite stone is an opal. I hope to begin to dabble in stone cutting myself soon! Thanks for the great videos!! Amazing opals!

Nice opal and arrowhead as always. Congrats to all those who have won. Definitely beautiful pieces.
Some beautiful colour there. I recon Riley will be well happy with those beautiful stones. Great job PO. Yes and to you sheila. Even though you just sat there doing nothing.

Those swirling, sparkling colours totally mesmerize me. I can totally lose myself in those stones. It's a good job too, cos where I am at the moment is pretty shit.
