Almost 60 myself and always enjoyed playing acoustic guitar since around 14, I played almost always for self enjoyment. (Drummer and there was always a country music gig somewhere in Tulsa area in the mid 80's).
I learned that I really should have learned a bit of banjo FIRST. I'm a definite beginner and absolutely love Jim's instruction! Very good "therapy" for me.

Holey cow. Ok Jim I am gonna comment. I have had a banjo for 5 years and absolutely love the sound, but never learnt much over that time and it sat in my wardrobe getting old right along with me. I found a bunch of different videos this year on the net and all seemed ok, but none really made me want to play, they just made feel a little slow :-)
The I discovered your first video and it sparked me into picking it up, cleaning it off and playing just a little bit everyday. I am 57 now and all I want to do is to be able to play some songs with confidence. Damn if your style didn't strike a chord. I chuckle every time I watch and I feel good about playing and not being great, just having a go. It doubt I can hold any kind of timing together, but damn I love the sound and I really appreciate the guidance and way you think. A little bit everyday is all it takes, your lessons are pretty much the right size (for me) in terms of difficulty and stuff to learn. It has only been a few months but you know what, I feel absolutely terrific when I get bunch of notes together properly. Cheers for that, I can't thank you enough, not sure how these new rolls are going to fair, but its the right time for some new stuff. Wish I could shake your hand. For me and everyone young and old that you are inspiring, you have our gratitude for sure. All the best. Rick

I'm from Minnesota, and was never much of a Bluegrass man. Just didn't hear a lot of it. But while listening to bands like The Avett Brothers and Trampled by Turtles (out of Duluth) I fell in love with the banjo. I've never played an instrument and can't really read music but bought a banjo recently. Searched CZcams and found your lessons and thought ,"yep, this is the guy." It's been about 5 weeks, and although I'm struggling I'm loving every minute of it. Liking the banjo has opened me up to music I normally wouldn't listen to. Thanks man.

Jim, you've added a lot of joy to my life. I've had a banjo for several years but never had found a teacher, and tried to teach myself from books. Your videos are engaging and fun, and I've learned so much! Still can't believe that I'm playing Cripple Creek with the "fancy bits" like the hammer-ons and pull-backs and whatnot. I'm impressing even myself! My son is learning from your videos too and my goal is to be able to play Dueling Banjos with him before long! "Practice, practice, practice!" Thanks again ,Jim. You're a blessing. God bless.

Hello Mr.Pankey! Thank you so very much for all you are doing. I for one appreciate it very much. Not so much my son though as he told me today to learn a new song haha. So onward I go to banjo in the hollow. My brother bought me a used 4 string banjo around 30 years ago as I had confided in him that I like the banjo. I plunked away on it for about ten years but I prefer the sound of a 5 string so I traded it in for a brand new 5 string. Then I ran into some difficulties and couldn't play it. I couldn't even pick it up, I was so weak. 10 years of physio therapy, acupuncture and chiropractor later, here I am playing cripple creek with a big smile on my face :) Thanks again and may God bless you with all the good things.

Jim, you’re the best! I took banjo lessons when I was 14 after 8 years of piano lessons. I didn’t stay with it, mainly because I struggled with my cheap rent-to-own banjo that was really a mess. The action was terrible; nut was so high that the strings cut my fingers trying to press nearly a quarter inch to the fretboard, and my tension 5th tuning peg wouldn’t stay tight. It’s been sitting in the closet for 45 years. I knew I couldn’t get anything for it in that condition, and I still want to play, so I took it in and got a complete setup, drum tightened, new bridge and strings, new geared 5th string peg and the action fixed.
I never got past Cripple Creek all those years ago, and it took me about a week to get back to where I left off. Having a blast practicing with your video lessons. I’m determined to learn Foggy Mountain Breakdown after I get Cripple Creek polished. Just wish I could find my copy of Earl Scruggs and the 5 String Banjo. I may have to cough up another $35 to get a new one.
Thanks for the inspiration and helping me get back to it!
PS. I bought a Ukulele a month before I got my banjo fixed and have learned a bunch of songs already on it. Enjoyed your ukulele videos too!

I started learning how to play the banjo 30 years ago but had to give up my banjo after a few months due to finances. I started again when I found your videos. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for putting these on here free of charge. You are one of the best teachers and THE best online. Jim, glad you're doing all these videos. Way back in the late '70's and early '80's I tried the Banjo. I gave it up when I had to sell the banjo. Always wanted to get back to it but... Now I am in my middle '70's myself and am now just about ready to take on Lesson #6. Found out my right-hand trigger finger is fooling with me. 'Gee, do I really want to do this?' Then you showed how you kinds let your ring finger tag along. That's a relief! It's slow going for sure but I am willing to stay with it. I replay the lessons so much I'm gonna' wear out CZcams. 😂 Thanks again for your channel.

Always ever present banjo in westerns and folk / fantasy type movies I have noticed that . Wonderful instrument. Guitars are unique too but I find guitars are difficult but fun to play.

The banjo has been intriguing to me for year’s since I was a child listening to bluegrass with my parents growing up in West Virginia. But once I saw Jerry Garcia ripping on one it was a bucket list for me. I just had my 50th birthday and my wife got me a Savannah from a local pawn shop. I just looked at it and smiled not knowing what the heck to do I got on CZcams and bam there you were. Sir you have made it so basic and simple that I haven’t put it down I just watched episode 5 and holy crap I can’t wait to get it down. Now by no means am I going fast but I’m having the time of my life. Thank you for sharing your time and skills

Mr. Pankey, I would like to thank you very much for your lessons. I found myself at ground zero for Hurricane Ida without electricity or internet connection for two weeks. What I did have was what I remembered from lessons 1-5, so that’s what I practiced between removing fallen limbs, running a generator, and surviving in a truly primitive situation. I credit this for helping me make it through with a wee bit of sanity. Thank you.

I don't comment much, but I just wanted to say "THANK YOU" for all your awesome videos! I'm older than a half century now, but I've always wanted to play the banjo. I finally got one only a short while back & I went searching for instruction on CZcams; that's when I came across your channel. Now there are many other videos out there, but yours are the best! I just love your happy vibe & kind, smiling face; and you really explain things so well - and with lots and lots of encouragement. I appreciate that so much!! You really helped me know that I CAN do this if I just practice enough and take my time. Your instructional style is just perfect & now I am doing FAR better at this than I ever thought I could do - thanks to you! I am thrilled to be playing! I'm gonna keep at it of course & I look forward to learning more and more. I will always be grateful for you and your videos that helped me so much Jim - you are a real blessing!! THANK YOU!!!!

And then, tonight, bam! I was playing this at a speed I never would have thought possible. And, in just 6 lessons, it opened up a world for me! All this, in six-seven week since I got that banjo.

Hi Jim, Thank you so much for doing these easy to learn lessons, you do it with encouragement, telling me " you got this" I bought a new Jameson banjo and it arrived on the 21st of Sept and I have never played one before. Today I played cripple creek all the way thru without mistake using your lessons. my fingers hurt like the dickens the first 8 days but now i play for 2 hrs over and over and no pain at all. so, I bought a 1000 dollar fender concert tone 58 today and It is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, I tried it out at the store and for some reason the"hammer on" and "pull off" and the slides are very easy, both to perform as well as the sound is much more predominate so I figured the 129 dollar banjo was great to start on and now that I have a few roll patterns that are going well I need something that emphasizes the notes I am playing. Foggy mountain break down I'm heading yer way. with a little help from my Friend Jim < BIG GRIN>

Jim, I reiterate what others have said because it sums your lessons up really well: You are the Bob Ross of banjo! I actually became interested in playing the banjo recently after playing a pirate game called Sea of Thieves. Not a poetic or rather interesting way to start a new craft, but it hooked me all the same. After a cursory search on google and youtube I was referred to your channel and these tutorials. At first not having been interested in playing bluegrass, I thought I could at least learn some basic techniques, but that quickly became a passion for me and I have lost myself in your instructional videos and any style of music that I can play! It is such a beautiful sounding instrument and thankfully my girlfriend has been very supportive and tolerant of my practicing every day.
Anyways, I just wanted to say thank you and to be so bold as to actually make a request. The video game I first heard and became interested in playing banjo has its own music. After many hours spent searching the internet, reddit and such, I still have not come across any instructions or even tabs for the shanty's. There is one specifically I feel could be a beginners speed called "Becalmed" and I was wondering if you had some time you could tab it out or make a video on how to play it? I know this is a huge request, but I any many others would very much appreciate it and I would see to reposting a link to it across reddit and the forums. If not, I completely understand and I wanted to express my gratitude to your wonderful videos!

Thanks so much. And thanks for giving me a chance to teach you banjo.
I'm probably not going to head down the video game music rabbit hole. Most of the time the arrangements in those games are just not banjo friendly, but you also have to keep in mind that I generally play and teach things I'm familiar with. It's a stretch for me to go out and learn something new that I'm unlikely to play again - for the sole purpose of creating a very niche CZcams instruction video.

i am going to chime in too: thanks Jim! I never considered myself musical- in fact I thought i was downright tuneless. Last month on a whim I purchased a banjo at an estate sale. It was missing a string and badly out of tune. Since then I have purchased strings- learnt to string a banjo, learned to tune it (snapping two in the process) : and found your channel. Now- I can almost play a Cripple Creek! Yee Haw! Badly but still... I am amazed- and the way you teach is fantastic- your positive attitude is contagious.
